There are a number of useful web sites dealing with the teaching of history. This page lists some general educational sites as well as those focusing more specifically the teaching of history.
Teaching History Sites
- American Memory Learning Page
Web site created by the Library of Congress to "assist educators as they use the American Memory web site to teach about United States history and culture. The site provides tips and tricks for using the American Memory collections, as well as frameworks, activities, and lessons that provide context for their use." Included are activities, lessons and resources such as:
- Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest
This UW center has created history curriculum guides covering Asian Americans in Washington State, Klondike Gold Rush, and Cold War in Washington State. The site also has the text from a UW survey course on PNW history and other material.
- Historical Thinking Matters
Web site "designed to teach students how to critically read primary sources and how to critique and construct historical narrative."
- History Matters and World History Matters
These two sites are designed for high school and college teachers of history survey courses and provide a "gateway to Web resources and offers unique teaching materials, first-person primary documents and threaded discussions on teaching."
- H-Net Teaching
Centralized page linking to 7 H-Net electronic discussion groups dealing with teaching. One group, H-High-S, "facilitates an ongoing discussion of curriculum, instructional strategies, and educational resources involved in teaching history, social studies, and related subjects in American secondary schools." Included are discussion logs, resources and reviews.
- Historian's Toolbox
Collection of 13 web-based tutorials created by California State University covers everything from topic selection to locating, evaluating and documenting sources.
- National Archives Digital Classroom
This site encourages "teachers of students at all levels to use archival documents in the classroom" and "provides materials from the National Archives and methods for teaching with primary sources." Included are activities, lesson plans and worksheets such as:
- National History Education Clearinghouse
"Central online location for accessing high-quality resources in K-12 U.S. history education" including best practices, teaching materials and other support for teachers of history.

- Educator's Reference Desk
Collections of lesson plans and links to online education material.
- ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center
ERIC is national resource supported by the Department of Education providing access to a wide range of educational literature.
- The Gateway to Educational Materials
"The Gateway to Educational Materials is a Consortium effort to provide educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites."
- Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators
Created by a middle school library media specialist, this list "is a categorized list of sites useful for enhancing curriculum and professional growth. It is updated often to include the best sites for teaching and learning."
- Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State
Provides links to curricular resources, federal and state legislative bodies concerned with education, including activities of the Commission on Student Learning and WWW servers at K-12 schools and universities nationwide. Also provides access to other useful collections of educational sources on the Web.
