Building a School Library Media Collection: Selected Resources
Many of the online resources listed on this page are UW restricted, which means they can be used off-campus only by UW students, faculty, and staff. Reference Reviews. The Thomson Gale Corporation, publisher of reference books, sponsors this page devoted to reviews of reference materials. There are three monthly review columns, all useful for the school librarian: Peter's Digital Reference Shelf looks at free and subscription online resources; Lawrence Looks at Books focuses on printed reference books; and Reference for Schools reviews reference materials for school libraries.
School-Libraries.org. Online Resources for School Librarians. www.school-libraries.org/resources. This collection of online resources has been selected and made available as a way of assisting school librarians to make effective use of the vast resources of the Internet and World Wide Web. Maintained by Peter Milbury, a school librarian, but not updated since June, 2002. Although this site still exists, Milbury's work is now sponsored by the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Called School-Libraries.net, it lists a number of resources for school librarians.
Bowker's Books in Print. Useful for locating availability and cost of books. Has a separate "Children's Room" for finding children's books. also at Seattle Public Library: subscribes to Books in Print with Book Reviews, accessible through SPL computers or remotely with an SPL library card.
Reference Books for Children. Children's Literature Z1037.1 P4 1992. Although dated, continues to be useful for suggesting types of reference books and for its annotations. Some of the titles listed will still be relevant, and others have been updated.
