Objectives in today’s orientation:
When you are done, please return to Jerry Anderson's home page for more information.
Establishing a research strategy:
Before starting any research project, it is important for you to establish
a strategy to determine not only how to find the materials that you will
use, but also whether the Libraries’ collections contain sufficient materials
for you to complete your research successfully.
What kinds of materials will you need?
Books, periodical articles, statistics, etc.?
How do you find them?
Where are they located?
In using the on-line catalog and databases, it is especially important to establish your strategies for finding needed materials, whether they are books or articles. The system designed by UW librarians in conjunction with the UW Computing Services greatly facilitate your searches, as we shall see in the on-line demonstration.
Books:
In addition to such subheadings under the main heading of a country, there are also topical main headings which are more generic or theoretical, but which may contain material about your topic, e.g.:

The strategy for finding periodical literature is much the same as that for books, except that you will need to use periodical indexes and abstracts. The indexes and abstracts which are listed in the section “Reference Area” below are useful for finding most of the periodical literature in the field of Scandinavian Studies. Also see the hand out “American Indexing Sources for Periodical Literature on Nordic Humanities and Social Sciences”.
We are fortunate here for the online system which was designed at the UW provides an interface making computer searching virtually uniform. Previously you would have to learn a number of different techniques for different databases. Now, at least for those databases on the UWIN and WILLOW systems, you can use the same procedures. In almost all of these you will be able to employ Boolean searching techniques. In our hands-on review of some of the databases you will experience the versatility of the system and learn to search beyond author, title and subject using the multiple searching modes made possible on our system, such as searching by:
