"Staying bush" a study of gay men living in rural areas / This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush |

"We gotta get out of this place" a qualitative study on the effects of leisure travel on the lives of gay men living in a small community / A feminist point of view is used in this study of gay men living in a small, collegiate community who use leisure travel as a negotiation strategy to achieve freedom of expression. Feminism is concerned with equality, empowerment, social change, the elimination of invisibility and the distortion of situated experiences. Feminist research is no more defined by the sex of the researcher than by the sex of the researched. Several in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants who revealed the complex nature of how many gay men pursue leisure experiences that are affirming to their gay self-identities in "Soledad." While gay meeting places and people exist in this small community, they remain mostly covert and invisible. Leisure travel to larger cities was a major negotiation strategy used to escape the stifling, hetero-normative community in which they lived. Escaping perceived hostilities was essential for gay men to feel comfortable exploring their homosexuality in a positive, affirming manner. Furthermore, the benefits of leisure travel bled into the daily lives of gay men after leisure travel was performed. For instance, leisure travel helped gay men make other gay friends who helped them cope with their homosexuality, and, in the process, they helped them "learn" how to be gay. The skills and experiences these gay men acquired while pursuing leisure in other places helped them transform their daily lives and home community into a more bearable place to live, thereby making home an easier place to negotiate. Gay men were able to discover a whole new set of possibilities of how to express themselves and discovered a new "gaze" by which to view the world. This research adds to the literature on travel and tourism, while expanding the information we have concerning the gay subculture that is becoming more socially and politically efficacious and economically powerful. Likewise, some of the gaps in the literature concerning leisure constraints and negotiation are also filled by this research |

"What is next?" gay male students' significant experiences after coming-out while in college / Results of this study have important implications for policy and practice. This study showed there is a strong need for safe classrooms and living environments, gay role models on campus, and a wide variety of support available to gay students. This study confirms that each new experience in the lives of gay students causes ripples of change, and that continued study regarding the experiences of gay students must persist |

One of the most persistent has been a pamphlet called "66 Questions and Answers on the Holocaust." The pamphlet neatly summarizes many of the most common arguments used by Holocaust deniers. Refuting these 66 claims strikes directly at the core of Holocaust denial. This website contains a point-by-point refutation of the pamphlet's half-truths and untruths. The full text of the original pamphlet is included, with the IHR's questions and answers reproduced unaltered, followed by the refutations |

Africana.com the gateway to the Black world "Africana.com was launched in 1999 by the editors of the print Africana and Encarta Africana encyclopedia. Describing itself as the 'Digital Bridge,' this resource contains a wide variety of content and services, including e-mail, daily and archived news and feature stories from a variety of sources, interactive discussion, shopping, music, book and movie reviews, and a crossword puzzle. Feature stories are organized into "channels" such as 'Black World' and 'Arts.' The Encarta Africana portion of the site links to articles featured on the Web page. The list of articles is browsable but there is also a site search feature. Now a part of the AOL Time Warner family, the site has undergone some changes, including streamlined graphics and a new e-mail utility. This site is well organized and is a particularly good site to consult for people and current events in the black community"--Best free reference Web sites 2001 |

After the Framework Directive combating discrimination outside employment / In November 2000, the Council of the European Union adopted the Framework Directive on Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation. This Directive, which enters into force on 2 December 2003, forbids discrimination in employment on grounds of religion or belief, age, disability, or sexual orientation. It is a first, important step for the European Union in combating the entrenched social and legal discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face across the Member States. This paper examines the next steps for the European Union in combating discrimination. In particular, it argues that there is a clear need for the Union to move quickly to complement the measures introduced in the area of employment with further legislation designed to prohibit discrimination in other spheres of life, such as healthcare, education, and housing |

Alaskan Eskimo and Polynesian Island population skeletal anatomy the "Pacific paradox" revisited through surface area to body mass comparisons / This project is an attempt to re-examine the "Pacific Paradox," as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The "Pacific Paradox" has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al. (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall body shape. These measurements were taken on Alaskan Eskimo populations spread throughout the entire region of Alaska and on Polynesian populations from a wide variety of Pacific Islands. The overall comparisons demonstrate similarities in the two body mass estimations; the bi-iliac breadth measurement and maximum femoral head diameter, and in the overall stature to body mass ratios, except in the males, who are significantly different in every measurement apart from surface area to body mass ratios and stature to body mass ratios. Further studies on each population were conducted to determine the role of latitude or isolation factors on each population. Interestingly, the Alaskan group did not follow the stereotypical trend of cold climate adaptation based on latitude. In the female groups, the females from the lowest latitude had the lowest surface area to body mass ratios followed by the highest latitude group. The male groups followed the stereotype with the highest latitude group having the lowest surface area to body mass ratio but interestingly, the group from the lowest latitude had the next lowest ratio. Polynesian results illustrated somewhat similar body proportions throughout the region with only a few exceptions. Meanwhile, several individuals measured from the Polynesian collection could be considered part of Melanesia. Migration patterns, founder effect through disease frequencies, nutritional effects and cultural traits along with many other issues are presented when examining the similarities and differences the Polynesian population has in comparison to both the Alaskan group and the small Melanesian sample |

American publishers of indecent books, 1840-1890 Focusing on works considered indecent by the nineteenth-century bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, this dissertation integrates the political economy of print with an analysis of the material forms of semi-erotic and obscene books. Surviving artifacts offer evidence about regional production styles and the ways that fiber selection, and particularly the use of straw in low-quality papers, influenced the prevalence of yellow wrappers for ephemeral works. Printer skill levels and capitalization can sometimes be determined through the presence of gripper marks on printed sheets. Reconstructing and contextualizing the technological practices of these publishers can create new tools for bibliographical analysis, an accessible source of information about technical processes for general historians, and a wealth of data about publishers such as William Berry, whose role in networks of erotica in nineteenth-century America has only recently begun to be appreciated |

The work described here summarizes the activities and results of an Analysis of Alternatives undertaken to address the cost-effectiveness of a wide range of alternatives for KC-135 recapitalization, including both different replacement systems and different replacement schedules. Among the conclusions were that medium to large commercial derivatives are the most cost-effective replacement aircraft and that, as long as the capability of the current fleet meets or exceeds the requirement, the costs are relatively insensitive to timing |

analysis of PILT-related payments and likely property tax liability of federal resource management lands This report stems from Congressional concern over the equivalency between Federal payments to counties containing Federal resource management lands, the likely tax liability, and other county-level benefits and costs associated with those lands. Results indicate that the overall tax liability on Federal lands is almost three times the Federal payments. A survey of county executive officers indicates that the direct fiscal costs or benefits to county governments from Federal lands and programs are modest |

application of the monthly time step Pitman rainfall-runoff model to the Kafue River basin of Zambia The study's output includes: a comprehensive database of hydrometeorological, physical catchment characteristics, landuse and water abstraction information for the Kafue basin; calibrated Pitman model parameters for the sub-catchments within the Kafue basin; recommendations for future work and data collection programmes for the application of the model. The study has also built capacity by facilitating training and exposure to rainfall-runoff models (specifically the Pitman model) and associated software, SPATSIM. In addition, the dissemination of the results of this study will serve as an effective way of raising awareness on the application of the Pitman model and the use of the SPATSIM software within Zambia and the region. The overall Pitman model results were found to be satisfactory and the calibrated model is able to reproduce the observed spatial and temporal variations in streamflow characteristics in the Kafue River basin |

Archiving websites general considerations and strategies / Firstly, unlike other well-known media, the Internet does not simply exist in a form suited to being archived, but rather is first formed as an object of study in the archiving, and it is formed differently depending on who does the archiving, when, and for what purpose. Secondly, this means that there is an element of subjective creation in the archived material, so that methodical deliberations are necessary--in other words, the answers to why and how the archived material has been created. These conclusions form the starting point for the last section of the book, which, based on comprehensive tests of archiving software, discusses in depth the elements that can be included in an archiving strategy |

Asking to see the soul a video documentary exploring the "coming out" experiences of men identifying with a gay subculture / This thesis details the production process of a video documentary that describes the "coming out" processes of gay men who identify with the "bear" subculture of the gay community and some of the conflicts and consequences that they face due to this action. The aim of this production was to portray with dignity and compassion the recorded feelings and personal histories of the subjects interviewed. Chapters are devoted to the development, pre-production, production, and post-production phases of this documentary. A detailed script, transcripts, shot list, and other examples and illustrations are included to give a better understanding of the entire production. This thesis also includes other necessary documentation such as a detailed budget and copies of performance releases |
