"Staying bush" a study of gay men living in rural areas /
This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush
"We gotta get out of this place" a qualitative study on the effects of leisure travel on the lives of gay men living in a small community /
A feminist point of view is used in this study of gay men living in a small, collegiate community who use leisure travel as a negotiation strategy to achieve freedom of expression. Feminism is concerned with equality, empowerment, social change, the elimination of invisibility and the distortion of situated experiences. Feminist research is no more defined by the sex of the researcher than by the sex of the researched. Several in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants who revealed the complex nature of how many gay men pursue leisure experiences that are affirming to their gay self-identities in "Soledad." While gay meeting places and people exist in this small community, they remain mostly covert and invisible. Leisure travel to larger cities was a major negotiation strategy used to escape the stifling, hetero-normative community in which they lived. Escaping perceived hostilities was essential for gay men to feel comfortable exploring their homosexuality in a positive, affirming manner. Furthermore, the benefits of leisure travel bled into the daily lives of gay men after leisure travel was performed. For instance, leisure travel helped gay men make other gay friends who helped them cope with their homosexuality, and, in the process, they helped them "learn" how to be gay. The skills and experiences these gay men acquired while pursuing leisure in other places helped them transform their daily lives and home community into a more bearable place to live, thereby making home an easier place to negotiate. Gay men were able to discover a whole new set of possibilities of how to express themselves and discovered a new "gaze" by which to view the world. This research adds to the literature on travel and tourism, while expanding the information we have concerning the gay subculture that is becoming more socially and politically efficacious and economically powerful. Likewise, some of the gaps in the literature concerning leisure constraints and negotiation are also filled by this research
"What is next?" gay male students' significant experiences after coming-out while in college /
Results of this study have important implications for policy and practice. This study showed there is a strong need for safe classrooms and living environments, gay role models on campus, and a wide variety of support available to gay students. This study confirms that each new experience in the lives of gay students causes ripples of change, and that continued study regarding the experiences of gay students must persist

'greater Central Asia partnership' for Afghanistan and its neighbors
Afghanistan is approaching a turning point. Security is increasing, institutional renewal is progressing, the economy is growing, and an open political system is taking root at both local and national levels. It is no exaggeration to declare that Afghanistan is emerging as the first major victory in the international war on terrorism. But victory should mark not just an end -- in this case to civil chaos -- but also a beginning. To now, America has scarcely considered what further vistas victory may open, let alone how it should respond to them. This is the urgent need of the moment. This paper proposes that progress in Afghanistan has opened a stunning new prospect that was barely perceived, if at all, when Operation Enduring Freedom was launched. This prospect is to assist in the transformation of Afghanistan and the entire region of which it is the heart into a zone of secure sovereignties sharing viable market economies, secular and relatively open systems of governance, respecting citizens' rights, and maintaining positive relations with the U.S

120-- oops-- 66 questions & answers about the Holocaust Nizkor's response to the Institute for Historical Review & Ernst Zundel
The Institute for Historical Review (IHR) publishes many small pamphlets designed to misinform people about the Holocaust. One of the most persistent has been a pamphlet called "66 Questions and Answers on the Holocaust." The pamphlet neatly summarizes many of the most common arguments used by Holocaust deniers. Refuting these 66 claims strikes directly at the core of Holocaust denial. This website contains a point-by-point refutation of the pamphlet's half-truths and untruths. The full text of the original pamphlet is included, with the IHR's questions and answers reproduced unaltered, followed by the refutations

After the Framework Directive combating discrimination outside employment /
In November 2000, the Council of the European Union adopted the Framework Directive on Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation. This Directive, which enters into force on 2 December 2003, forbids discrimination in employment on grounds of religion or belief, age, disability, or sexual orientation. It is a first, important step for the European Union in combating the entrenched social and legal discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face across the Member States. This paper examines the next steps for the European Union in combating discrimination. In particular, it argues that there is a clear need for the Union to move quickly to complement the measures introduced in the area of employment with further legislation designed to prohibit discrimination in other spheres of life, such as healthcare, education, and housing

Alaskan Eskimo and Polynesian Island population skeletal anatomy the "Pacific paradox" revisited through surface area to body mass comparisons /
This project is an attempt to re-examine the "Pacific Paradox," as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The "Pacific Paradox" has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al. (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall body shape. These measurements were taken on Alaskan Eskimo populations spread throughout the entire region of Alaska and on Polynesian populations from a wide variety of Pacific Islands. The overall comparisons demonstrate similarities in the two body mass estimations; the bi-iliac breadth measurement and maximum femoral head diameter, and in the overall stature to body mass ratios, except in the males, who are significantly different in every measurement apart from surface area to body mass ratios and stature to body mass ratios. Further studies on each population were conducted to determine the role of latitude or isolation factors on each population. Interestingly, the Alaskan group did not follow the stereotypical trend of cold climate adaptation based on latitude. In the female groups, the females from the lowest latitude had the lowest surface area to body mass ratios followed by the highest latitude group. The male groups followed the stereotype with the highest latitude group having the lowest surface area to body mass ratio but interestingly, the group from the lowest latitude had the next lowest ratio. Polynesian results illustrated somewhat similar body proportions throughout the region with only a few exceptions. Meanwhile, several individuals measured from the Polynesian collection could be considered part of Melanesia. Migration patterns, founder effect through disease frequencies, nutritional effects and cultural traits along with many other issues are presented when examining the similarities and differences the Polynesian population has in comparison to both the Alaskan group and the small Melanesian sample

American publishers of indecent books, 1840-1890
Focusing on works considered indecent by the nineteenth-century bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, this dissertation integrates the political economy of print with an analysis of the material forms of semi-erotic and obscene books. Surviving artifacts offer evidence about regional production styles and the ways that fiber selection, and particularly the use of straw in low-quality papers, influenced the prevalence of yellow wrappers for ephemeral works. Printer skill levels and capitalization can sometimes be determined through the presence of gripper marks on printed sheets. Reconstructing and contextualizing the technological practices of these publishers can create new tools for bibliographical analysis, an accessible source of information about technical processes for general historians, and a wealth of data about publishers such as William Berry, whose role in networks of erotica in nineteenth-century America has only recently begun to be appreciated

Analysis of alternatives (AoA) for KC-135 recapitalization : executive summary /
Aerial refueling tankers are a critical part of U.S. military and national security strategy. The KC-135 constitutes the bulk of the current tanker force, but this fleet is nearing 50 years of age and has exhibited some technical difficulties and increased costs of operation. The work described here summarizes the activities and results of an Analysis of Alternatives undertaken to address the cost-effectiveness of a wide range of alternatives for KC-135 recapitalization, including both different replacement systems and different replacement schedules. Among the conclusions were that medium to large commercial derivatives are the most cost-effective replacement aircraft and that, as long as the capability of the current fleet meets or exceeds the requirement, the costs are relatively insensitive to timing

This report stems from Congressional concern over the equivalency between Federal payments to counties containing Federal resource management lands, the likely tax liability, and other county-level benefits and costs associated with those lands. application of the monthly time step Pitman rainfall-runoff model to the Kafue River basin of Zambia
The study's output includes: a comprehensive database of hydrometeorological, physical catchment characteristics, landuse and water abstraction information for the Kafue basin; calibrated Pitman model parameters for the sub-catchments within the Kafue basin; recommendations for future work and data collection programmes for the application of the model. The study has also built capacity by facilitating training and exposure to rainfall-runoff models (specifically the Pitman model) and associated software, SPATSIM. In addition, the dissemination of the results of this study will serve as an effective way of raising awareness on the application of the Pitman model and the use of the SPATSIM software within Zambia and the region. The overall Pitman model results were found to be satisfactory and the calibrated model is able to reproduce the observed spatial and temporal variations in streamflow characteristics in the Kafue River basin

Archiving websites general considerations and strategies /
Firstly, unlike other well-known media, the Internet does not simply exist in a form suited to being archived, but rather is first formed as an object of study in the archiving, and it is formed differently depending on who does the archiving, when, and for what purpose. Secondly, this means that there is an element of subjective creation in the archived material, so that methodical deliberations are necessary--in other words, the answers to why and how the archived material has been created. These conclusions form the starting point for the last section of the book, which, based on comprehensive tests of archiving software, discusses in depth the elements that can be included in an archiving strategy

Attitudes of resident assistants toward homosexuality and gay and lesbian students a study at a southeastern research university /
This purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of resident assistants at a large southeastern research university towards homosexuality and gay and lesbian students, as well as about the training they received on dealing with the issues that these students face. Attitudes in this descriptive census study were collected from 133 respondents by the distribution of a quantitative survey that utilized a Likert scale. In addition to their attitudes, the resident assistants were also asked to provide their gender, the amount of prior experience they had with lesbians or gay males, and the number of years they had been a resident assistant. Chi square analysis was performed to determine if there were any statistically significant relationships between the RAs attitudes and the demographic categories. Though two of the three variables included had been significant in other studies, there was little relation here between attitudes and gender, prior interactions with lesbians or gay males, or years of experience as an RA. The mean scores indicated that as a whole, the sample was neutral to somewhat positive towards lesbians and gay males, but when the mean scores were used in conjunction with the demographic variable chi squares, there were many participants who felt strongly negative about homosexuality. In addition to the discussion of attitudes, recommendations for improvements to the resident assistant training program, provided by both the participants and the researcher, and suggestions for further research are included
Attitudes toward homosexuality at private colleges
The GLBT Attitude Assessment included the GLBT Far Proximity Scale and GLBT Close Proximity Scale. While the GLBT Far Proximity Scale indicated no mean difference from males toward the subgroups, the statistical analysis conducted on the GLBT Close Proximity Scale did indicate a mean difference. In addition, males who held conservative beliefs in their political and religious orientations were significantly different than those who held liberal and moderate beliefs. Respondents' differences presented in this study were within the neutral range, however, they had negative and positive trends. For example, the respondents' attitudes were least positive toward transgender people
Attitudes towards commercial recreation on public conservation lands /
The demand for, and importance of, commercial recreation on public conservation lands in New Zealand has increased rapidly in the past 30 years and commercial recreation is now (generally) an accepted use in these areas. Some aspects of the provision of commercial activities and services are controversial, yet little research attention has been given to exploring people's attitudes towards them. This report reviews the "state of knowledge" about the attitudes of visitors toward the provision of commercial recreation services on public conservation lands. Study methods comprised a literature review, the synthesis of preliminary findings from a doctoral research project, and a focus group workshop which provided a "sounding board" for findings and conclusions. Thirteen topics were identified as relevant to consideration of commercial recreation: definition; growth and impacts; objections to commercial recreation (philosophical, threats to independent recreation, fear of "commercialisaton," differences between commercial and independent recreationists); conflict/compatibility between commercial and independent recreation; effects which relate to a mulitplicity of factors; the need to manage recreationists' expectations; providing opportunities--for whom?; cost-benefit analysis; equity of management for commercial and independent visitors; legislative issues; research quality; quality of tourism operations and concessions management; and the relationship with national identity. Overall, the study found that the topic is multi-dimensional, attracts differing and sometimes opposing views, and is potentially controversial. Recommendations for further research are provided

Australian Digital Theses Program and the theory of disruptive technologies a case study /
The theory of disruptive technologies put forward by Clayton Christensen in 1997 has attracted significant attention. This case study tests the hypothesis that the theory is generalizable to new situations. It uses datasource triangulation by using document, statistical, and interview analyses (including investigator triangulation) to apply the theory to Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT) and finds that the Program may indeed be a disruptive technology in relation to academic libraries, universities, and to the publishing industry. However, it has greater potential to be disruptive in the latter, and to be a sustaining technology, as defined by the theory, in relation to libraries and universities

Baghdad burning girl blog from Iraq-- let's talk war, politics, and occupation /
Presents the Internet blog entries of a young Iraqi woman living in Baghdad as she chronicles the hardships and complexities of daily life and the intricacies of the political situation during the first year of the Iraqi 2003 invasion and the subsequent occupation. In August 2003, the world gained access to a remarkable new voice: a blog written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, whose identity remains concealed for her own protection. Calling herself Riverbend, she offers searing eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, punctuated by astute analysis on the politics behind events. In a voice in turn eloquent, angry, reflective, and darkly comic, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city of neighbors whose homes are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias

Bitterroot Valley of western Montana area economic profile /
This profile provides a description and assessment of the area economy of the Bitterroot Valley of southwestern Montana. Changing conditions and trends in the area economy over the course of the last twenty to twenty-five years are examined, including trends in population and employment growth and associated income changes and economic restructuring. Changing conditions in Ravalli County and the Bitterroot Valley are compared to those for the larger Rocky Mountain West region and nation as a whole. Various measures of the Bitterroot area economy also are systematically compared to similar measures for areas throughout the western United States having similar characteristics to the Bitterroot Valley. Two types of "peer areas" are selected for this purpose: 1) non-metro areas in the West nearby small and intermediate regional centers of 30,000 to 100,000 people, and, 2) non-metro areas nearby small and intermediate regional centers that are also nearby large concentrations of Forest Service lands

Bolles collection on the history of London the collection of Edwin C. Bolles on the history of London from its founding to the 19th century
"Edwin C. Bolles, professor of English at Tufts College (now Tufts University) in the late 19th century, assembled a substantial focused collection of materials on Victorian London. These materials include not only conventional print sources but many pieces that are unique or quite rare: folio descriptions of the city from limited print runs, contemporary 19th century maps in various shapes and formats, illustrations and prints from the 17th through the 19th century, that capture a precious (and now largely forgotten) record of how the British represented this city. The digital archive represents a comprehensive and integrated collection of sources and resources on the history and topography of London. Texts, images, and maps in the Bolles collection are all interconnected. Together they form a body of material, heterogeneous in form, but homogeneous in theme, that transcends the limits of print publication and exploits the flexibility of the electronic medium. The digitized maps are linked to each other, to relevant source texts, and to illustrations of the locations as they appeared a the time or at present. Similarly, the texts are linked to the maps and the images, and so on"--"More about this collection" screen

Braided river ecology : a literature review of physical habitats and aquatic invertebrate communities /
A braided river is one that, over some part of its length, flows in multiple, mobile channels across a gravel floodplain. In New Zealand, many braided rivers remain in a relatively unmodified condition, but increasing demands for hydro-electricity generation, irrigation, gravel extraction and flood protection works are placing pressure on these systems. However, apart from a limited number of studies on the ecology of individual species or reaches, there has been little coordinated ecological research to assess the overall values and function of braided river ecosystems in New Zealand. This review summarises the international and New Zealand literature on braided rivers, with particular emphasis on benthic invertebrate ecology. Braided rivers typically experience short-term channel migration within the active bed and greater lateral channel migration across the entire floodplain in the longer term. Channel migration occurs because steep headwater tributaries supply highly variable discharges and mobile erodable substrates to the mainstem. Braided rivers typically possess extended floodplains, which may contain a mosaic of floodplain habitats ranging from highly unstable main-stem channels to stable spring complexes. Main channel aquatic invertebrate communities are frequently low in diversity and dominated by the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium spp., but also chironomids and elmid beetles. In contrast, floodplain springs can have highly diverse communities rich in amphipods, mayflies, caddis, snails and chironomids. Groundwater and floodplain pond habitats also occur frequently and can contain several specialist taxa. Braided rivers and their floodplains are spatially complex, temporally dynamic habitats with high landscape- and reach-scale biodiversity values. The challenge facing managers is to protect this biodiversity within the context of increasing human demands on the rivers. This report highlights the particular threats and management issues associated with braided rivers in New Zealand and identifies areas where future research is required

British Columbia earthquake response plan
This plan describes the responsibilities, organization, and concept of operations necessary for emergency response to a major earthquake in British Columbia. It is designed to react to the most serious subduction earthquake which has been forecast, and which would affect the south-western coastal regions of the province where more than half of the population lives. A smaller earthquake, whose damage could be more localized, is also the concern of this plan. The basic premise of this plan is that local governments remain responsible for managing and conducting their own emergency operations. The plan takes into account observations resulting from its evaluation in three major earthquake response exercises, and a changed provincial government structure. Appendices include a glossary and an overview of the earthquake threat in the province

Building competitive regions : strategies and governance - UW restricted UW restricted
In recent years, the main focus of territorial policy has been on sustaining growth, not only to address relative decline, but also to make regions more competitive. Putting this in practice is complicated because different regions have different characteristics (urban, intermediate, industrial, rural, etc.), which imply specific policy and investment needs. This report assesses the strategies pursued by OECD member governments to address the competitiveness of regional economies and the accompanying governance mechanisms on which the implementation of these strategies rests. The report is principally based on findings from the series of reviews undertaken by the OECD Territorial Development Policy Committee at national and regional levels.--Publisher's description

Building puzzles and growing pearls a qualitative exploration of determining aboutness /
Despite centuries of organizing information in libraries and other information institutions, little is known about how a document is analyzed to determine its subject matter. This case study is a qualitative exploration to better understand the processes involved in the conceptual analysis of documents. Conceptual analysis, an essential step in the subject analysis process, is the attempt by a cataloger or indexer to determine the subject matter, or the aboutness, of a document. The purpose of this research is to examine how interested yet untrained participants perform the tasks of conceptual analysis when no process is suggested. The study uses observation, think-aloud procedures, and in-depth, semi-structured interviews to understand the participants' subject determination processes. Transcripts of the analysis sessions and interviews were examined for underlying patterns of analysis. The aims of this research are to understand how individuals approach the process of determining aboutness, what bibliographic, content, or visual cues they use to find key aboutness data, and what patterns emerge during the subject determination process. This research begins an attempt to develop a model of conceptual analysis to be used in teaching, research, and praxis

candidate gene study and a full genome screen for male homosexuality
The second report and major portion of the thesis, consists of a full genome scan of a large collection of sibships containing brothers concordant for homosexuality. An allele-sharing linkage methodology is used to analyze the data. In the analyses, sexual orientation is considered both as a dichotomous phenotype as well as a quantitative trait and the Kinsey scales of sexual orientation are used to define the phenotype. The sample population consists of 144 sibships that comprise either two gay brothers (135 sibpairs) or three gay brothers (9 sibtrios). With available parents and heterosexual siblings, a total of 456 individuals are included in the study. The results suggest that several loci could influence this complex trait, although no conclusive evidence for a particular locus is obtained. Among the conclusions of the report is that a new candidate gene on 9q22, 17-[beta]-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase III (HSD17[beta]3), may influence the development of homosexuality in some men. Other analyses justify continued interest in the Xq28 region but also indicate that separate developmental pathways might influence the trait as well

Capital flows and emerging market economies : report /
The flow of capital between nations, in principle, brings benefits to both capital-importing and capital-exporting countries. But very large flows can also create new exposures and bring new risks. The failure to analyse and understand such risks, excessive haste in liberalising the capital account and inadequate prudential buffers to cope with the greater volatility in more market-based forms of capital allocation have at one time or another compromised financial or monetary stability in many emerging market economies. On the other hand, rigidities in capital account management can also lead to difficulties in macroeconomic and monetary management. This Report takes stock of the policy debate in this complex area over the past 20 years and examines the vulnerabilities associated with these capital movements. It finds that it is a combination of policies - sound macroeconomic policies, prudent debt management, exchange rate flexibility, the effective management of the capital account, the accumulation of appropriate levels of reserves as self-insurance and the development of resilient domestic financial markets - that provides the optimal response to the large and volatile capital flows to the EMEs. How these elements are best combined will depend on the country and on the period: there is no "one size fits all"

Cataloging exhibition publications best practices. Title and statement of responsibility /
The cataloging of exhibition publications poses unique challenges to new and experienced catalogers alike. These types of publications often require more use of a cataloger's judgment, and more intervention in terms of transposing, omitting, and supplying data. Decision-making about the choice of a primary access point can be quite involved, and local practices and guidelines greatly affect how an exhibition publication is cataloged. This publication of best practices, created by the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee, is devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American cataloguing rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource description and access (RDA), Library of Congress rule interpretations (LCRI), and MARC 21

The overlap of global book collections in member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), as exemplified by an analysis of nearly 28.5 million records in a July 2004 snapshot of the OCLC WorldCat database, is not as extensive as expected. For all countries combined, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record is fewer than five, that is, fewer than five ARL libraries own copies of the book represented by the bibliographic record. For each of ten world regions, excluding North America, the average number of ARL library holdings per bibliographic record ranges from a low of 2.99 for East Asian books to a high of 6.28 for Latin American books. That is, on average fewer than three and only slightly more than six ARL libraries hold any book that was published outside of North America

With more than 700 million residents living in rural areas, China is still a predominantly rural country. But despite substantial improvements in standards of living, the Chinese countryside is largely lagging behind. This report analyzes the key socio-economic forces at work in China's rural areas and discusses the current government strategy for rural development. It argues that in order to bridge rural-urban divides the current policy approach needs to go further in recognizing rural-urban complementarities beyond agriculture and that food-security targets need to be balanced with wider rural development objectives.--Publisher's description
China : defining the boundary between the market and the state - UW restricted UW restricted
China has made enormous progress in developing the modern legal and regulatory foundation for the market economy. The private sector is now the main driver of growth, and new laws have gone a long way toward establishing private property rights, competition, and mechanisms for entry and exit comparable to those of many OECD countries. At the same time important challenges remain, including further clarification of the scope of state ownership, reform of relations among central and local governments, firmer establishment of the rule of law, and strengthening of regulatory institutions and processes. This review of China's regulatory system focuses on the overall economic context for regulatory reform, the government's capacity to manage regulatory reform, competition policy and enforcement, and market openness. The review also examines the regulatory framework in the electricity, water and health care sectors, and follows a multidisciplinary and highly interactive approach. A number of OECD instruments and policies are used in this assessment, although the review also takes into account the specific challenges faced by the Chinese authorities. The review includes a comprehensive set of policy recommendations.--Publisher's description

This book is a resource for implementing the recommendations on civil society and aid effectiveness emerging from the Accra High Level Forum and its preparatory process. These recommendations address a broad community, including developing country governments, donors, and CSOs from developing and developed countries.--Publisher's description

Information collected from 10 wild mushroom buyers in British Columbia in early spring 2002 indicated that over 40 species of mushrooms have been commercially harvested from the forests of the province. Currently, however, two species--pine mushroom and Pacific golden chanterelle--dominate, and seven other species or species groups are handled by half of the buyers responding to the survey. Some of the fungi previously thought to be commercially harvested in British Columbia are in fact brought in from elsewhere. Also, misidentifications and taxonomic uncertainty in some cases mean that the exact identity of the fungi being harvested is not known. Nonetheless, this survey confirms that a variety of edible wild mushrooms from B.C. forests are commercially marketed

Components of internalized homophobia, self-disclosure of sexual orientation to physician, and durable power of attorney for health care completion in older gay men
Older gay men may experience significant stressors additional to the normative effects of aging: stigma, discrimination, and internalized homophobia. These additional minority stressors may affect the health choices of gay men as they age. The purpose of this study was to explore the health care choices of older gay men through an examination of age cohort, two components of internalized homophobia, self-disclosure of sexual orientation to physician, and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPAHC) completion in a sample of 105 gay men 65 years of age and older (range = 65-87). The study used Chi square, t-test, and logistic regression to explore the variables. Results of the study indicated that: (a) gay men 65 years and older who had self-disclosed their sexual orientation to their physicians were more likely to have completed a DPAHC, (b) gay men 65 years and older who disclosed showed a lower discomfort with gay identity than non-disclosers, (c) gay men 75 years of age and older who disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician also showed lower discomfort with gay identity than those who had not disclosed, (d) gay men 65 years and older who disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician were 3.89 times more likely to have completed a DPAHC than those individuals who had not disclosed their sexual orientation to their physician, (e) gay men 75 years of age and older were 2.75 times more likely to have completed a DPAHC than gay men 65-74 years of age, (f) increased discomfort with gay identity was associated with a 44% decreased likelihood of disclosure of sexual orientation to their physician for each one unit increase in the score on the Discomfort with Gay Identity component, and (g) participants completing a DPAHC were 3.92 times more likely to self-disclose their sexual orientation to their physician than those who had not completed a DPAHC

This is a book about conflict. In that, it is certainly not alone, but it approaches the problem in three East African countries from the standpoint of economic analysis. The authors have not ignored social, ethnic and historical factors which led to conflict, but have identified economic realities which exacerbate the frictions created by the other factors. These realities include disparities in rural-urban income levels and in health, education and employment, and a system of clientilism which benefits a small group of civil servants to the detriment of the rest of the population. Having identified aggravating economic factors in conflict, the authors proceed to an appreciation of its economic cost, then propose economic policy changes which would tend towards reducing the potential for conflict. One of a series of three volumes, this book concentrates on Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda

Consequences of prejudice-related discrepancies compunction alters the perception of ongoing behavior /
The stereotyping and prejudice literature emphasizes the importance of examining differences between high- and low-prejudice individuals with regard to how they form impressions, because pinpointing such differences may provide valuable information for prejudice-reduction efforts. However, the possibility that low-prejudice individuals may actually perceive behavior differently than do their high-prejudice counterparts has not been explored. Two studies examined the roles of sexual-prejudice and prejudice-related discrepant cognitions (i.e., from either societal or personal egalitarian standards) in the perception of the ongoing behavior of a target identified as either gay or heterosexual. Study 1 revealed that high-discrepancy low-prejudice individuals perceptually segmented the ongoing behavior of a gay target in a less stereotypic manner than did all other participants. Study 2 examined the relationship between automatic negative reactions to gay targets and perceptual segmentation, but the results were inconclusive

"This is an online electronic edition of the the first Masonic book printed in America, which was produced in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin in 1734, and was a reprint of a work by James Anderson (who is identified as the author in an appendix) printed in London in 1723. This is the seminal work of American Masonry, edited and published by one of the founding fathers, and of great importance to the development of colonial society and the formation of the Republic. The work contains a 40-page history of Masonry: from Adam to the reign of King George I, including, among others, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Solomon, Hiram Abif, Nebuchadnezzar, Augustus Caesar, Vitruvius, King Athelstan the Saxon, Inigo Jones, and James I of England. There are extended descriptions of the Seven Wonders of the World, viz. 1) the Great Pyramid, 2) Solomon's Temple, 3) the City and Hanging-Gardens of Babylon, 4) the Mausoleum or Tomb of Mausolus, King of Caria, 5) the Lighthouse of Pharos at Alexandria, 6) Phidias's statue of Jupiter Olympius in Achaia, and 7) the Colossus at Rhodes (although some maintain the 5th is the Obelisk of Semiramis). It is a celebration of the science of Geometry and the Royal Art of Architecture, as practiced from ancient times until the then-current revival of the Roman or Augustan Style. 'The Charges of a Free-Mason' and the 'General Regulations' concern rules of conduct for individuals and of governance for Lodges and their officers. The work also includes five songs to be sung at meetings, one of which--'A New Song'--appears in print for the first time and may have been composed by Franklin. The document suggests that Masonry, in its modern Anglo-American form, was rooted in Old Testament exegesis ('So that the Israelites, at their leaving Egypt, were a whole Kingdom of Masons ... under the Conduct of their GRAND MASTER MOSES') and in contemporary Protestant ideals of morality, merit, and political equality"--Abstract at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/libraryscience/25

Copyright and cultural institutions guidelines for digitization for U.S. libraries, archives, and museums /
The development of new digital technologies has led to fundamental changes in the ways that cultural institutions fulfill their public missions of access, preservation, research, and education. Many institutions are developing publicly accessible Web sites that allow users to visit online exhibitions, search collection databases, access images of collection items, and in some cases create their own digital content. Digitization, however, also raises the possibility of copyright infringement. It is imperative that staff in libraries, archives, and museums understand fundamental copyright principles and how institutional procedures can be affected by the law. "Copyright and Cultural Institutions" was written to assist understanding and compliance with copyright law. It addresses the basics of copyright law and the exclusive rights of the copyright owner, the major exemptions used by cultural heritage institutions, and stresses the importance of "risk assessment" when conducting any digitization project. Case studies on digitizing oral histories and student work are also included
