Anne Zald is the Geography Librarian and also serves as Head, Map Collection & Cartographic Information Services (located in the basement of Suzzallo/Allen Library). Questions such as which database to use for a particular project, or how best to construct a database search, or any general Libraries-related questions can be sent to Anne. She'd also welcome hearing your suggestions for materials to add to the Libraries' collections. Her mail address is zald@u.washington.edu, and her telephone number is (206)543-2725. Don't hesitate to get in touch with questions or comments!
In addition to assistance available from Anne, research assistance is available online and over the telephone:
In order to check out books and use many of the online services provided by the Libraries you need to have on hand your Husky card, which also serves as your library card. Review the information about Borrowing Services and Policies.
To take advantage of the many resources provided by the Libraries for your research, you will need to be able to connect to the Libraries from your home or office. Although the UW Libraries Catalog can be accessed over the Internet from anywhere in the world, most of the research databases and electronic journals are available only to current UW students, faculty, and staff under licensing agreements with publishers. It is necessary for you to be "authenticated" as a UW student in order to use the licensed resources from an off-campus location. To connect to UW restricted resources from your home or office, review this information about Connecting From Off-Campus.
Reserve material, including electronic reserves, can be found in the UW Libraries Catalog or by linking the Course Reserves site from the Information Gateway. You can search the course reserves either by course (GEOG 512) or professor's last name (e.g., Harrington).
Electronic reserves are indicated by an item named "ELECTRONIC READINGS FOR [course number]." Click on that item to get to a link that says "Connect to this title online". Click on that link, then enter your UW NetID to bring up a list of electronic files for the class. The list is in alphabetical order by author.
Your Husky card is your Libraries card which you can use to borrow books, videos, maps, and other materials; some journals also circulate. The loan period for most books is twelve weeks, with some exceptions including Health Sciences, Government Publications, and the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Verify due dates and renew materials by logging in to your library account.
Books can be paged from one UW library, or UW campus, to another. Use the
Books not available through Summit, and journal articles which are not available in the UW Libraries, can be requested through the Interlibrary Loan/UWorld Express Service. You will need to login to http://www.lib.washington.edu/uworld/ to register and place your request. Books will be loaned from another library; copies of journal articles will be sent electronically whenever possible. Prior to requesting materials through this service, check the UW Libraries Catalog to make sure we do not own what you need. If the UW does not own the material needed, or the UW copy of the book is checked out (the catalog will indicate if the book is checked out) you can check the Summit catalog or decide if you have time to request an interlibrary loan through Interlibrary Loan/UWorld Express.
A guide to Interlibrary Loan/UWorld Express services and fees is available at: http://www.lib.washington.edu/uworld/services_and_costsSeattle.html.
Keep up-to-date by arranging for email notification of the latest articles published in your favorite journals and of the latest books received in the UW Libraries. Alert Services allow you to specify subject terms or journal titles in a profile that will automatically notify you of new material available.
Wireless Internet Access is available in several library locations, including:
Get to know the libraries and librarians serving subject areas of interest to you. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Geography, you may find that several libraries contain materials you will need, including the Architecture/Urban Planning Library, Foster Business Library, Health Sciences Library and several units within the Suzzallo/Allen Library. Reference librarians in each of these libraries will be happy to help you get started on your research, acquaint you with the Libraries online system, and answer questions.
