"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
Attributed to Benjamin Disraeli.

"He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts—for support rather than illumination."
Andrew Lang. Quoted in The Harvest of a Quiet Eye, compiled by Alan L. Mackay (1977).

"Like dreams, statistics are a form of wish fulfillment."
Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929), French semiologist. Cool Memories, ch. 4 (1987, trans. 1990).

Should you doubt it, perhaps this example will illustrate.
