Encyclopedias and dictionaries provide background information and can be used to identify key people, events and dates. Many also include short bibliographies.
Background Notes
Periodically updated brief reports on countries produced by the Department of State.

Finding Books: Catalogs

Use the following databases to locate books in the UW Libraries and in other libraries around the region, nation and world. Books unavailable at the UW can be requested through the Interlibrary Borrowing Service.

Finding Articles: Indexes

Use indexes to find articles (and sometimes books, dissertations, etc.) on a topic. Most indexes are arranged by subject or include a subject index. There are indexes covering all sorts of subjects, use those which best fit your research topic. Additional electronic indexes for specific disciplines can be found on the Information Gateway, Find It By Subject or you can browse the alphabetical list of databases.

Once you identify articles you need make sure you have the complete citation (author, title, journal name, volume, pages and year), then look in the UW Libraries Catalog for the journal name (do a title search for the journal name to see if the UW subscribes) to see if and where the journal is kept (library location and call number).

Articles from journals which the UW does not own can be requested through the Interlibrary Borrowing Service.

Expanded Academic Index
Index to approximately 1500 journals and magazines in all disciplines. Includes some full-text articles. UW Only.

Historical Abstracts
Index to articles dealing with world history (excluding the U.S. and Canada. UW Only.

PAIS International
Covers social and public policy literature from over 1,400 periodicals and thousands of government documents, books, and other sources from 1972 onward. Early years, dating back to 1915, available in print in Suzzallo Reference. UW Only.

Research Library
Index to articles in all fields, full-text articles available for selected journals and magazines. From the menu, choose Research Library Complete. UW Only.

Social Sciences Citation Index
Index to articles in all fields of social science. Part of the Web of Science, from the search screen, choose Social Sciences Citation Index. UW Only.

News Sources

Academic (Lexis-Nexis) UNIVerse
Full text database of news, legal and business information. Sources include major U.S. and international English-language papers, magazines, wire services, transcripts and law reviews. UW Only.

Official Index to the Times, 1906-1980
Index to the Times of London, also available in print in Suzzallo Reference. Earlier index, Palmer's Index to The Times, 1790-1905, available on CD-ROM within the library. Post 1980 Times coverage is available through Lexis Nexis. UW Only.

National Newspapers
Index with full text dating from 1995 of 9 major U.S. newspapers including the Wall Street Journal. From the menu, choose National Newspapers. UW Only.

World News Connection
International news coverage, translations of newspaper articles, broadcast reports, etc. Coverage begins in 1994, succeeds Foreign Broadcast Information Service. If this source isn't working try Global NewsBank.UW Only.

Government Sources and Sites

The Government Publications division is located in the basement of Suzzallo Library. The division has collections for local, state, federal and international organizations plus some foreign material. The division is the best place in the libraries to find help in locating and using government publications.

The resources listed here are just some of web sites and research tools useful for locating government publications. A good site for locating governmental web sites is the University of Michigan's Government Resources on the Web.
