"For here forlorn and lost I tread" the gender differences between captivity narratives of men and women from 1528 to 1886 /
The captivity narrative itself changed over time, depending on the audience and the mood of the times. Women moved from being stoic, Puritan women, through the Amazon stage of the American Revolution, to the Victorian Age and its vision of women as delicate and frail. The narratives can tell scholars much about a past way of life, and how men and women were viewed through the centuries

"Staying bush" a study of gay men living in rural areas /
This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush

action plan for Australian birds, 2000 /
Provides a national overview of the conservation status of all birds occurring in Australian territory against IUCN categories. Outlines threats and recommends actions to minimise these. Habitats or areas of particular importance for bird conservation including key areas for threatened species are listed. The plan identifies processes that threaten birds and the areas where these processes are a problem in order to recommend conservation priorities including research and management actions. Lists 25 taxa as Extinct, 32 as Critically Endangered, 41 as Endangered, 82 as Vulnerable, and 81 as Near Threatened as of 30 June, 2000. The remaining 1,114 taxa are deemed to be Least Concern, including 28 introduced taxa and 95 vagrants. Recovery outlines are presented for all threatened taxa (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) and taxon summaries for taxa listed as Extinct or Near Threatened. An additional 53 taxon summaries are presented for Least Concern taxa that have restricted distributions or have previously been considered threatened

Analysis of the ash weight and elemental composition in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets collected at Colomac and other sites in the NWT /
Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets were collected from several sites in the NWT and analysed for evidence of exposure to major dust and soil sources using two methods. The collection sites included two areas of tailings at the Colomac mine (abandoned), with on-site and off-site control areas and seasonal ranges, and sites at or near the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines. Insoluble ash content of the faecal material averaged 9.3% of the dry matter (D.M.) and varied significantly between sites. A group of samples from the tailings areas at Colomac had elevated ash contents and exceeded 30% of dry matter in five samples. Based on several assumptions, the dietary soil intake necessary to achieve the high ash contents in the faecal samples from Colomac would exceed 50% of the diet in one sample. The average ash content of all the samples collected from the tailings area at Colomac was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the off-site control samples. Ash from the faecal pellets was chemically similar to tailings collected at Colomac. Consistent differences were also observed between the Ekati samples and those from natural range areas, although the variance explained by the associations was relatively low. The results of the study are generally consistent with published reports on high rates of soil ingestion at lick sites by ungulates. This ingestion can result in very high levels of soil in the diet, similar to the maximum levels noted here. The ecological risk assessment for Colomac included an explicit soil ingestion model for caribou which assumed an ingestion rate of 20% of the diet. The data in the present study support the use of this average value but indicate that maximum values may range as high as 50% in some caribou. The study was not designed to describe the amount of the elements absorbed by caribou which have ingested the tailings

Antifeedant effects of diethyl toluamide and neem oil on native cave weta, cockroaches, and amphipods /
The antifeedant effects of both diethyl toluamide (DEET) and neem oil added at concentrations of 0.2% to cereal-based baits used for vertebrate pest control in New Zealand were investigated with three taxa of native invertebrates known to eat these baits. DEET reduced the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits, but neem oil did not. Cinnamon oil, routinely added to bait used for possum control, also failed to reduce the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits. Captive amphipods were not observed feeding on treated or untreated baits. Further tests are needed to confirm both the palatability and efficacy of toxic baits containing DEET to possums, rats, and mice, and the antifeedant effects of toxic baits containing DEET on invertebrates in the field. The environmental fate of DEET will also need to be investigated before it can be added routinely to baits used for control of possums and rodents in New Zealand

application of the monthly time step Pitman rainfall-runoff model to the Kafue River basin of Zambia
The study's output includes: a comprehensive database of hydrometeorological, physical catchment characteristics, landuse and water abstraction information for the Kafue basin; calibrated Pitman model parameters for the sub-catchments within the Kafue basin; recommendations for future work and data collection programmes for the application of the model. The study has also built capacity by facilitating training and exposure to rainfall-runoff models (specifically the Pitman model) and associated software, SPATSIM. In addition, the dissemination of the results of this study will serve as an effective way of raising awareness on the application of the Pitman model and the use of the SPATSIM software within Zambia and the region. The overall Pitman model results were found to be satisfactory and the calibrated model is able to reproduce the observed spatial and temporal variations in streamflow characteristics in the Kafue River basin

Artificial cover objects for leiopelmatid frogs /
Artificial cover objects (ACOs) for monitoring Leiopelma archeyi and L. hochstetteri frogs were designed and tested in the Waikato region, New Zealand. Occupancy of 119 covers of 7 different designs was recorded between May 1998 and March 2002. From March 2001 the covers were visited monthly. In the course of 1260 cover checks, a total of 26 L. archeyi and 17 L. hochstetteri were found insided the trial ACOs. Most of the designs were used by frogs but to different extents (occupancy ranging from 0% to 21%). Analyses of these results are reported and the suitability of the designs for use in monitoring frog populations is discussed

Assessing the effectiveness of a Department of Conservation procedure for training domestic dogs to avoid kiwi /
An experiment assessed the effectiveness of a procedure used by Department of Conservation (DOC) conservancies to train domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) to avoid kiwi (Apteryx spp.). That procedure involves fitting a dog with a collar that delivers a brief electric shock the moment the dog contacts either a stuffed kiwi or a kiwi carcass placed in an open field. Thirteen dogs representing a range of breeds, sex and ages were sourced from a local pound. Each dog was initially trained to approach a manufactured burrow while being alone and attached to a modified retractable lead, the handle of which was fixed to a pole adjacent to the burrow. Each then received test trials where food, a stuffed possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), ferret (Mustela furo), or kiwi was driven into view from within the burrow, and a carcass of that animal was presented immediately outside the burrow. Those 12 dogs that ate the food and contacted each stuffed animal or carcass then received the DOC procedure, but in a different site to that used for testing. When the test trials were repeated, only one dog (8%) behaved in a manner suggesting that the DOC training had been effective. This failure of most dogs to avoid the very stimuli that had been associated with electric shock logically precludes a dog's avoidance of live kiwi in their natural habitats. Possible reasons why the DOC procedure is unreliable are considered, as are alternative practical techniques for training kiwi avoidance, such as inducing illness in a dog after it ingests food that has a strong kiwi flavour and/or odour

Australian Digital Theses Program and the theory of disruptive technologies a case study /
The theory of disruptive technologies put forward by Clayton Christensen in 1997 has attracted significant attention. This case study tests the hypothesis that the theory is generalizable to new situations. It uses datasource triangulation by using document, statistical, and interview analyses (including investigator triangulation) to apply the theory to Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT) and finds that the Program may indeed be a disruptive technology in relation to academic libraries, universities, and to the publishing industry. However, it has greater potential to be disruptive in the latter, and to be a sustaining technology, as defined by the theory, in relation to libraries and universities

Australian faunal directory
"The Australian Faunal Directory (AFD) is being compiled as a public enquiry database and will serve as a source of taxonomic and biological information on all animal species known to occur in Australia. It incorporates the data from the terminated Zoological Catalogue of Australia database project ... Central to the Australian Faunal Directory is a checklist which aims to list to family all animal groups known to occur in Australia and its dependant territories. Linked to this checklist at various taxonomic levels are databases ranging from simple checklists of names through to comprehensive catalogue style reports. Links to other sources of information, such as the Fauna of Australia, identification keys, endangered species, are under development."

All animals were retrieved from trawl nets and had lesions consistent with death from asphyxiation. Severe lesions sustained by 23 sea lions would probably have compromised survival had they not drowned in the nets. The other sea lions had moderate or mild trauma that probably would not have compromised survival had they escaped the net. All the fur seals and the southern elephant seal sustained severe trauma and/or had aspirated regurgitate

Baghdad burning girl blog from Iraq-- let's talk war, politics, and occupation /
Presents the Internet blog entries of a young Iraqi woman living in Baghdad as she chronicles the hardships and complexities of daily life and the intricacies of the political situation during the first year of the Iraqi 2003 invasion and the subsequent occupation. In August 2003, the world gained access to a remarkable new voice: a blog written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, whose identity remains concealed for her own protection. Calling herself Riverbend, she offers searing eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, punctuated by astute analysis on the politics behind events. In a voice in turn eloquent, angry, reflective, and darkly comic, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city of neighbors whose homes are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias

Bait station preferences of ship rats /
Department of Conservation (DOC) surveillance programmes to detect rodent invasions on rodent-free islands currently involve observation of rodent interference with toxic baits in bait stations. Different DOC Conservancies use different types of bait station. We monitored the behavioural responses of 24 wildcaught captive ship rats (Rattus rattus) to four currently used bait station types; yellow plastic pipe, wooden box ("rat motel"), wooden tunnel, and white plastic Philproof bait stations. The bait stations contained non-toxic bait similar to the toxic bait used in surveillance programmes. More than 75% of the rats entered the yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, and wooden tunnel bait stations, but fewer than 10% entered the Philproof bait stations. Rats ate bait from the first three bait station types but not from the latter. The average amount of bait eaten per night by the rats that ate bait (0.8 g) was not enough for a lethal dose for 50% of the population if the baits had contained 20 ppm, or even 50 ppm, brodifacoum. On the basis of these results, DOC should use yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, or wooden tunnel bait stations rather than Philproof bait stations for surveillance for ship rats. However, other bait station types and the responses of kiore (R. exulans) and house mouse (Mus musculus) to different bait stations should be tested before any final decision is made on the best type to use in multispecies rodent surveillance programmes
