The William C. Brumfield Russian Architecture Collection

Exhibit, June 12-August 10, 2008, Allen Library 1st-floor Balcony

A professor of Slavic studies at Tulane University in New Orleans and North America’s leading expert on Russian architecture, William C. Brumfield has photographed noteworthy buildings in hundreds of cities and towns throughout Russia in a career that spans four decades, amassing a collection that numbers 110,000 images and continues to grow.  His photographic work has been compared to that of the legendary pre-revolutionary documentarian of the Russian countryside, Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii.

This exhibit features images included in the online Brumfield Russian Architecture Collection, a collaboration between Prof. Brumfield and the UW Libraries, supported by a 2-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  For a pilot version of the online Collection, visit http://depts.washington.edu/ceir/brumfield/

Professor Brumfield’s extensive published work includes A History of Russian Architecture (2nd edition, University of Washington Press, 2004) and over 200 other books, scholarly articles and reviews.  For more information about the UW Libraries’ NEH project, contact slavinfo@u.washington.edu
