About Endowments

An endowment is a permanent fund supporting a purpose of your choosing. Depending on your individual passion or interest, your endowment, which provides funds in perpetuity, can be focused or wide-ranging. The principal of your gift is invested and grows over time, while quarterly distributions provide a steady, reliable source of income to the program you choose. This ensures your gift will provide benefits year after year, generation after generation.

Hai-Hung Poon Tsou Libraries Student Employee Endowed Scholarship

Hai-Hung Poon Tsou

The purpose of the Endowment is to provide assistance to University Libraries student employees as a part of the Libraries Student Employee Scholarship Program.

This endowment was established by Judy Tsou, Head of UW Music Library, and her husband, David Carlson, to honor the pedagogical spirit of Judy's mother.

Hai-Hung Poon Tsou was an inspiring teacher who mentored many students during her more than 30 years of teaching, mostly in Hong Kong. She taught advanced mathematics in a public high school, where many students came from economically and socially disadvantaged homes and would not have pursued higher education had it not been for her urging and nurturing. Many of these students became successful professors, physicians, engineers, and artists who never forgot their teacher. Even forty to fifty years later, they regularly visited their beloved teacher and expressed gratitude for her mentoring and teaching.
