The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.
Vince Lombardi

In honor of this year's Rose Bowl, which will determine the college football national champion for 2005-06, we've decided to highlight the history of college football; more specifically, we'd like to focus on our famed University of Washington Huskies and its appearances in the Rose Bowl.

To that end our display features memorabilia and artifacts from that hallowed history illustrating the changes that have taken place over the years. These items are normally housed in our UW Libraries' Special Collections.

A list of other works on football and college athletics is available.

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England.

Rupert Brooke, “The Soldier”

Before there was a Veteran’s Day, there was Armistice Day commemorating the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The “war to end all wars” killed a generation of young men, more than 8 million strong. Read their words and those of others who lived through the “Great War.” This display showcases some of the many books of World War I memoirs, diaries, letters and other primary sources available in the UW Libraries.

The display cases feature historic photographs and other artifacts from Special Collections. Original WWI era newspapers are from the Microform and Newspaper Collections.

A list of published memoirs, diaries and letters of those who participated in World War I is available.

We’ve been making fun of politics and politicians since the ancient Greeks. Modern political cartoons made their debut in the 18th century and have been going strong ever since. The current display showcases some of the many books on political cartoons available in the UW Libraries.

Original artwork by Eric Devericks, editorial cartoonist for The Seattle Times is featured. There is also a related September Project display of editorial cartoons located in the Microform and Newspaper Collections on the ground floor of Suzzallo Library.

A list of books dealing with political cartoons is available.
