Using VeriCite as a Plagiarism Prevention Tool

What is VeriCite?

  • Web-based system that allows student papers to be submitted and checked for identical matches / plagiarism
  • Compares student papers with sources available on the Internet, select commercial article databases, and papers submitted at UW and other institutions using VeriCite
  • Generates an "Originality Report," showing matches between the submitted text and these texts
  • Available through Canvas

Using VeriCite as a Learning Tool

    • Select the "no repository" option when creating new assignments to protect students' privacy. The default setting allows all uploaded papers to be added to the VeriCite database.
    • Build post-VeriCite conversations into assignment design:
      • Allow students to submit their papers to VeriCite and make updates to their papers.
Opportunity for deeper learning: ask students to write a short reflection paper on their experience with their VeriCite results.
      • Assign peer-review partners or teams to discuss findings
      • Conduct student/instructor consultations to provide feedback on VeriCite results
