120-- oops-- 66 questions & answers about the Holocaust Nizkor's response to the Institute for Historical Review & Ernst Zundel
The Institute for Historical Review (IHR) publishes many small pamphlets designed to misinform people about the Holocaust. One of the most persistent has been a pamphlet called "66 Questions and Answers on the Holocaust." The pamphlet neatly summarizes many of the most common arguments used by Holocaust deniers. Refuting these 66 claims strikes directly at the core of Holocaust denial. This website contains a point-by-point refutation of the pamphlet's half-truths and untruths. The full text of the original pamphlet is included, with the IHR's questions and answers reproduced unaltered, followed by the refutations |

3-dimensional evaluation of wing movement in ground birds during flap-running and level flight an ontogenetic study /
To better understand the versatility of the avian wing, we also studied juvenile birds as they negotiated their 3-dimensional, terrestrial environment, from a period of pre-flight to adulthood. Juvenile precocial ground birds flap their developing wings from the day they hatch in order to attain elevated refuges and to descend safely from heights. The wing kinematics of pre-flight juveniles employing WAIR and controlled flapping descent (CFD) compare to those of the adult respectively performing WAIR and flying, but are awkward and clumsy. The kinematic variables observed can be organized into two groups (neuromuscular/behavioral, and growth) based on developmental patterns. In order to survive their vulnerable pre-flight stage, juveniles negotiate their complex environment by creating aerodynamic forces, conferred by their incipient wings, to flap-run up slopes to safety, and flap down to return to the ground. WAIR and CFD illustrate the incrementally adaptive uses of the ontogenetically developing wing and may be reflective of functional transitions during the evolutionary development of avian flight |

Accumulation of elements in Salix and other species used in vegetation filters with focus on wood fuel quality /
In further studies, a method was developed to determine the proportions of nutrient-rich bark in coppiced Salix, while heavy metal phytoextraction capacity was assessed in two Salix vegetation filters. The relevance of proportion of bark on wood fuel quality and element removal from vegetation filters was also investigated. The concentrations of the elements studied in harvestable Salix shoot biomass were higher, meaning lower wood fuel quality, in plantations where proportion of bark was high. Removal of elements increased with biomass yield. As proportion of nutrient-rich bark decreases with increasing yield, longer cutting cycles should be considered, in order to improve fuel quality and nutrient removal potential |

action plan for Australian birds, 2000 /
Provides a national overview of the conservation status of all birds occurring in Australian territory against IUCN categories. Outlines threats and recommends actions to minimise these. Habitats or areas of particular importance for bird conservation including key areas for threatened species are listed. The plan identifies processes that threaten birds and the areas where these processes are a problem in order to recommend conservation priorities including research and management actions. Lists 25 taxa as Extinct, 32 as Critically Endangered, 41 as Endangered, 82 as Vulnerable, and 81 as Near Threatened as of 30 June, 2000. The remaining 1,114 taxa are deemed to be Least Concern, including 28 introduced taxa and 95 vagrants. Recovery outlines are presented for all threatened taxa (Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable) and taxon summaries for taxa listed as Extinct or Near Threatened. An additional 53 taxon summaries are presented for Least Concern taxa that have restricted distributions or have previously been considered threatened |

Activity patterns and habitat associations of Kemp's ridley turtles, Lepidochelys kempi, in the coastal waters of the Cedar Keys, Florida
Habitat associations of Kemp's ridley turtles were analyzed in terms of availability, utilization, and preference using compositional analyses. Forty-eight percent of the study area consisted of sand bottom, but over half of the sand sites had rock outcroppings. Seagrasses comprised 16% of the available habitat, green macroalgae comprised 12%, live bottom and red macroalgae each comprised 7%, and the Corrigan Reef oyster bars comprised < 2%. Six of the turtles utilized unvegetated sand and rock bottom surrounding Corrigan Reef (65-78% of foraging ranges and 64-82% of locations), and three turtles utilized the vegetated southern region (37-64% of foraging ranges and 31-57% of locations). Compositional analyses indicated that turtles used rock outcroppings in their foraging ranges at a significantly higher proportion than available within the study area. Additionally, live bottom and green macroalgae were utilized significantly more than seagrasses. Water depth ranged from intertidal oyster reefs to depths > 3 m, but turtles preferred 1-3 m depths within their foraging ranges. Daily activities of turtles were attributed to food acquisition and bioenergetics, while their habitat associations may be correlated to habitat structure, prey availability, competition, and developmental stage |

Addis Ababa principles and guidelines for the sustainable use of biodiversity
The Addis Ababa principles and guidelines for the sustainable use of biodiversity provide a framework for assisting governments, indigenous and local communities, resource managers, the private sector and other stakeholders, about how to ensure that their uses of biological diversity will not lead to its long-term decline. The practical principles in most instances apply to both consumptive and non-consumptive uses of biodiversity components. They take into account requirements related to policies, laws, and regulations; management of biological diversity; socio-economic conditions; and information, research, and education |

Addressing uncertainty in braided river bird counts /
When estimating a true population parameter from survey data, there is always some level of uncertainty as a result of imperfect detection, imperfect observation, spatial and temporal variation, and sampling error. In this report, we discuss the sources of uncertainty in New Zealand braided river bird counts. We use Monte Carlo simulations to illustrate the effect of different survey designs on uncertainty in counts for two species of bird: wrybill (Anarhynchus frontalis) and black-fronted tern (Sterna albostriata). The simulations were based on observed counts from previous river surveys. In general, larger annual changes can be detected with less uncertainty than smaller changes. Additional survey effort, e.g. replicate counts within a year, replicate sections within a river or replicate surveys over sequential years, will reduce uncertainty |

After the Framework Directive combating discrimination outside employment /
In November 2000, the Council of the European Union adopted the Framework Directive on Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation. This Directive, which enters into force on 2 December 2003, forbids discrimination in employment on grounds of religion or belief, age, disability, or sexual orientation. It is a first, important step for the European Union in combating the entrenched social and legal discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face across the Member States. This paper examines the next steps for the European Union in combating discrimination. In particular, it argues that there is a clear need for the Union to move quickly to complement the measures introduced in the area of employment with further legislation designed to prohibit discrimination in other spheres of life, such as healthcare, education, and housing |

Alaskan Eskimo and Polynesian Island population skeletal anatomy the "Pacific paradox" revisited through surface area to body mass comparisons /
This project is an attempt to re-examine the "Pacific Paradox," as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The "Pacific Paradox" has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al. (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall body shape. These measurements were taken on Alaskan Eskimo populations spread throughout the entire region of Alaska and on Polynesian populations from a wide variety of Pacific Islands. The overall comparisons demonstrate similarities in the two body mass estimations; the bi-iliac breadth measurement and maximum femoral head diameter, and in the overall stature to body mass ratios, except in the males, who are significantly different in every measurement apart from surface area to body mass ratios and stature to body mass ratios. Further studies on each population were conducted to determine the role of latitude or isolation factors on each population. Interestingly, the Alaskan group did not follow the stereotypical trend of cold climate adaptation based on latitude. In the female groups, the females from the lowest latitude had the lowest surface area to body mass ratios followed by the highest latitude group. The male groups followed the stereotype with the highest latitude group having the lowest surface area to body mass ratio but interestingly, the group from the lowest latitude had the next lowest ratio. Polynesian results illustrated somewhat similar body proportions throughout the region with only a few exceptions. Meanwhile, several individuals measured from the Polynesian collection could be considered part of Melanesia. Migration patterns, founder effect through disease frequencies, nutritional effects and cultural traits along with many other issues are presented when examining the similarities and differences the Polynesian population has in comparison to both the Alaskan group and the small Melanesian sample |

Alcohol, temperance & prohibition a Brown University Library digital collection
"The digitized items in the Alcohol, Temperance and Prohibition Collection are from the Alcoholism and Addiction Studies Collection as well as from various collections in the Brown University Library - broadsides, sheet music, pamphlets and government publications. The items have been collected at Brown for over three centuries for researchers and scholars at Brown and worldwide interested in American history, including the history of alcoholism, and in how the media was used for spreading ideas and information, and in how the arts presented various movements. The digitized pamphlets were published by various groups leading up to prohibition, during the prohibition era, and ending with the 21st amendment in 1933, which repealed the 18th amendment from 1919 prohibiting the manufacturing, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors."--About this collection |

Alexander Graham Bell family papers at the Library of Congress, 1862-1939
The online version of the Alexander Graham Bell family papers at the Library of Congress comprises a selection of 4,695 items (totaling about 51,500 images). This presentation contains correspondence, scientific notebooks, journals, blueprints, articles, and photographs documenting Bell's invention of the telephone and his involvement in the first telephone company, his family life, his interest in the education of the deaf, and his aeronautical and other scientific research. Dates span from 1862 to 1939, but the bulk of the materials are from 1865 to 1920. Included among Bell's papers are pages from his experimental notebook from March 10, 1876, describing the first successful experiment with the telephone, during which he spoke through the instrument to his assistant the famous words, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Bell's various roles in life as teacher, inventor, celebrity, and family man are covered extensively in his papers |

Allometric scaling and floral size variation in Collinsia
Allometric scaling theory has previously been used to estimate the functional relationship between two biological variables. In addition to parameter estimation, deviations from the general scaling relationship can be used to create hypotheses. Here, I explore deviations from the allometric scaling pattern for plant and floral size within the genus Collinsia on three levels: among species, within species, and among populations of a single species. Collinsia species are self-compatible annual herbaceous plants that have been shown to vary in floral size, autonomous fruit production, and estimated mating system. I quantified the amount of variation in characteristics related to plant mating systems: floral size and autonomous fruit production in a pollinator-free environment and used variation and scaling deviations to generate expectations about environmental selection pressures. I found that the scaling relationships differed on each of the three levels and that deviation from the general floral size-plant size relationship is common within this genus. The among-species regression explained only 20% of the variation in floral size, and species- and population-level regressions explained even less. The four species for which I obtained controlled environment estimates of vegetative and floral trait in this study differed significantly in autonomous fruit production, floral size, and plant size, while populations of C. heterophylla differed in floral and plant characteristics, but not autonomous fruit production. In addition, variation in plant size characteristics was 50-66% greater than variation in floral size characteristics suggesting selection to reduce variation in floral size and flexibility in plant size. Autonomous fruit production was correlated with floral size in C. tinctoria, with floral number in C. verna, and uncorrelated in C. heterophylla suggesting that the ability to self-fertilize varies among species. Using a comparative method and investigating factors correlated with plant mating system, such as floral traits, across a group of closely related species provides new insights into factors affecting their variation |

Alpine lizard research in Fiordland National Park : February-March 2007 /
In 2004, a new species of skink ("Sinbad skink"; Oligosoma sp. "Sinbad Valley") was discovered in Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand. Although the individual was collected as a potential holotype specimen, it was a juvenile; therefore, a taxonomic description of this species remained incomplete. Field expeditions were undertaken to the Darran Mountains and Llawrenny Peaks, Fiordland National Park, to collect data on and photographs of an adult Sinbad skink for the preparation of a formal taxonomic description of the species. The Barrier Knob and Sinbad Gully areas were surveyed and 11 lizards, including one Sinbad skink, were captured over 5 days. One possible new species of skink, which has been assigned the tag name "Barrier skink," was discovered. Another skink (tentatively called the "mahogany skink") may represent a second new species, but requires further investigation. The presence of introduced mammals and weka (Gallirallus australis) within the Sinbad area are of concern for both the Sinbad and mahogany (Oligosoma sp. "mahogany skink") skinks, since these skinks are likely to have high priority for research and conservation. Further surveys are required to identify and secure populations of each taxon, and to establish their range, habitat and microhabitat, and conservation status. Our findings suggest that Fiordland is a potential "hotspot" for lizard diversity. Additional surveys for both geckos and skinks in the Fiordland National Park are required, as further new species are likely to exist throughout the area |

Typically 2,000-15,000 words in length, the documents consist of drafts and revisions, varying in form from narrative to dialogue to report to case history. The histories describe the informant's family education, income, occupation, political views, religion and mores, medical needs, diet, and miscellaneous observations. Pseudonyms are often substituted for individuals and places named in the narrative texts. Includes special presentation, "Voices from the thirties : an introduction to the WPA Life Histories Collection / Ann Banks," which includes a sampling of the Federal Writers' Project interviews, with audio excerpts read by modern actors |

American publishers of indecent books, 1840-1890
Focusing on works considered indecent by the nineteenth-century bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, this dissertation integrates the political economy of print with an analysis of the material forms of semi-erotic and obscene books. Surviving artifacts offer evidence about regional production styles and the ways that fiber selection, and particularly the use of straw in low-quality papers, influenced the prevalence of yellow wrappers for ephemeral works. Printer skill levels and capitalization can sometimes be determined through the presence of gripper marks on printed sheets. Reconstructing and contextualizing the technological practices of these publishers can create new tools for bibliographical analysis, an accessible source of information about technical processes for general historians, and a wealth of data about publishers such as William Berry, whose role in networks of erotica in nineteenth-century America has only recently begun to be appreciated |

Anabat bat detection system : description and maintenance manual /
Anabat bat detection systems record ultrasonic bat calls on cassette tape by using a sophisticated ultrasonic microphone and cassette tape interface. This paper describes equipment setup and some maintenance issues. The layout and function of display panels are presented with special emphasis on how to use this information to troubleshoot equipment problems. The maintenance section describes opening the equipment, identifying an internal battery, removing panels for maintenance, reinstalling a dislodged light sensor, replacing a broken switch, constructing and replacing a critical battery stack, and making an external power cable. A short discussion on the Anabat software describes how to access, install, and check the Anabat5 program for use with the Anabat equipment. The unit used to access field data collected on a cassette recorder, the zero crossings analysis interface module (ZCAIM), is briefly addressed with a section on how to adjust the tape recorder head skew so that field data can be reproduced accurately on a laboratory recorder. Tips for handling 12-volt rechargeable batteries are also included |

Analysis of alternatives (AoA) for KC-135 recapitalization : executive summary /
Aerial refueling tankers are a critical part of U.S. military and national security strategy. The KC-135 constitutes the bulk of the current tanker force, but this fleet is nearing 50 years of age and has exhibited some technical difficulties and increased costs of operation. The work described here summarizes the activities and results of an Analysis of Alternatives undertaken to address the cost-effectiveness of a wide range of alternatives for KC-135 recapitalization, including both different replacement systems and different replacement schedules. Among the conclusions were that medium to large commercial derivatives are the most cost-effective replacement aircraft and that, as long as the capability of the current fleet meets or exceeds the requirement, the costs are relatively insensitive to timing |

Analysis of intraspecific and interspecific interactions between the invasive exotic tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Miller) Swingle) and the native black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)
Invasive exotic plants can persist and successfully spread within ecosystems and negatively affect the recruitment of native species. The exotic invasive Ailanthus altissima and the native Robinia pseudoacacia are frequently found in disturbed sites and exhibit similar growth and reproductive characteristics, yet each has distinct functional roles such as allelopathy and nitrogen fixation, respectively. 1) A four-month full additive series in the greenhouse and 2) spatial point pattern analysis of trees in a silvicultural experiment were used to analyze the intraspecific and interspecific interference between these two species. In the greenhouse experiment, total biomass responses per plant for both species were significantly affected by interspecific but not by intraspecific interference (p <0.05). Competition indices such as Relative Yield Total and Relative Crowding Coefficient suggested that A. altissima was the better competitor in mixed plantings. Ailanthus altissima consistently produced a larger above ground and below ground relative yield while R. pseudoacacia generated a larger aboveground relative yield in high density mixed species pots. However, R. pseudoacacia exhibited more variation for multiple biomass traits, occasionally giving it an above ground advantage in some mixed species pots. Analysis of spatial point patterns in the field with Ripley's K indicated that the two species were positively associated with each other along highly disturbed skid trails in the majority of the field sites. Locally, increased disturbances could lead to more opportunities for A. altissima to invade, negatively interact with R. pseudoacacia (as was evident in the greenhouse study), and become established in place of native species |

analysis of PILT-related payments and likely property tax liability of federal resource management lands
This report stems from Congressional concern over the equivalency between Federal payments to counties containing Federal resource management lands, the likely tax liability, and other county-level benefits and costs associated with those lands. Results indicate that the overall tax liability on Federal lands is almost three times the Federal payments. A survey of county executive officers indicates that the direct fiscal costs or benefits to county governments from Federal lands and programs are modest |

Analysis of the ash weight and elemental composition in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets collected at Colomac and other sites in the NWT /
Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) faecal pellets were collected from several sites in the NWT and analysed for evidence of exposure to major dust and soil sources using two methods. The collection sites included two areas of tailings at the Colomac mine (abandoned), with on-site and off-site control areas and seasonal ranges, and sites at or near the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines. Insoluble ash content of the faecal material averaged 9.3% of the dry matter (D.M.) and varied significantly between sites. A group of samples from the tailings areas at Colomac had elevated ash contents and exceeded 30% of dry matter in five samples. Based on several assumptions, the dietary soil intake necessary to achieve the high ash contents in the faecal samples from Colomac would exceed 50% of the diet in one sample. The average ash content of all the samples collected from the tailings area at Colomac was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the off-site control samples. Ash from the faecal pellets was chemically similar to tailings collected at Colomac. Consistent differences were also observed between the Ekati samples and those from natural range areas, although the variance explained by the associations was relatively low. The results of the study are generally consistent with published reports on high rates of soil ingestion at lick sites by ungulates. This ingestion can result in very high levels of soil in the diet, similar to the maximum levels noted here. The ecological risk assessment for Colomac included an explicit soil ingestion model for caribou which assumed an ingestion rate of 20% of the diet. The data in the present study support the use of this average value but indicate that maximum values may range as high as 50% in some caribou. The study was not designed to describe the amount of the elements absorbed by caribou which have ingested the tailings |

analysis of the ecology and public perception of coarse woody debris in Virginia
Coarse woody debris (CWD) is an important habitat component for wildlife, fish, and plants and is important in nutrient cycling and soil formation. Knowledge of the volume, distribution, and use of CWD across Virginia would be useful to forest managers modeling nutrient budgets in southeastern forests and is important to wildlife management efforts. Knowledge of the effectiveness of informational brochures and cooperative learning activities/presentations at influencing public perception of CWD is important to program design and evaluation efforts in teaching and extension. The objectives of this study were to quantify the relationship between forest cover type and CWD volume, correlate CWD volume with small mammal and bird activity, distribute information on the advantages and disadvantages of CWD using informational brochures and cooperative learning activities/presentations, and compare the effectiveness of such teaching techniques at influencing public perception of CWD. The volume and wildlife use of CWD was assessed within 12 mature second-growth stands in Virginia. Volume of CWD was measured using fixed-area plots. Use of CWD by small mammals and birds was assessed by noting bodily, foraging, or movement evidence. Pre- and post-survey instruments were used to evaluate how perceptions were altered in first year college students who either reviewed an informational brochure or participated in a cooperative learning activity/presentation. Results suggested that the management of CWD for wildlife was most needed in southeastern Virginia where CWD volumes were lowest and that the value of CWD for wildlife was best conveyed through cooperative learning activities/presentations and may be important to landowner education efforts. Results suggested that management efforts to increase CWD volumes in Virginia should focus on coniferous dominated stands where CWD volumes were lowest. Such a finding, combined with the knowledge that the value of CWD was best conveyed through presentations, suggests that landowners of coniferous woodlots could be effectively educated with presentations. Given that brochures were more effective for females than males, brochures addressing natural resource issues might be the most appropriate, cost effective method of education at events that target female audiences. Knowledge gained from this study that CWD management for wildlife would be most appropriate in western Virginia where CWD was most used by wildlife for travel and that presentations were most effective at reaching suburban participants may be important to outreach program design efforts. Regardless of academic major, presentations were more effective at generating positive attitudes toward CWD. The results of this study suggest that the choice between informational brochures and presentations for influencing public perceptions of CWD will likely be influenced by the demographics of the target audience and the relevance of the topic locally |

Antifeedant effects of diethyl toluamide and neem oil on native cave weta, cockroaches, and amphipods /
The antifeedant effects of both diethyl toluamide (DEET) and neem oil added at concentrations of 0.2% to cereal-based baits used for vertebrate pest control in New Zealand were investigated with three taxa of native invertebrates known to eat these baits. DEET reduced the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits, but neem oil did not. Cinnamon oil, routinely added to bait used for possum control, also failed to reduce the numbers of captive cave weta and cockroaches feeding on treated non-toxic baits. Captive amphipods were not observed feeding on treated or untreated baits. Further tests are needed to confirm both the palatability and efficacy of toxic baits containing DEET to possums, rats, and mice, and the antifeedant effects of toxic baits containing DEET on invertebrates in the field. The environmental fate of DEET will also need to be investigated before it can be added routinely to baits used for control of possums and rodents in New Zealand |

Anuran locomotion--structure and function. 2, Jumping performance of semiaquatic, terrestrial, and arboreal frogs /
Frogs evolved as jumping machines. The earliest recognized anuran fossil possessed a foreshortened body and elongated hindlimbs, primary adaptations for jumping. The majority of extant frogs retain jumping as their primary mode of locomotion. Eighty species of frogs were tested to determine their absolute and relative (jumping distance divided by snout-vent length) jumping abilities. The species include representatives from the Ascaphidae, Bufonidae, Dendrobatidae, Pelodryadidae, Discoglossidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Microhylidae, Myobatrachidae, Pelobatidae, and Ranidae. Jumping performance is examined relative to taxonomic and habitat group, fatigue, body size, and sex. The ranking of jumping ability (distance jumped divided by body length) among the sampled species from weakest to strongest is Bufonidae, Pelobatidae, Discoglossidae, Microhylidae, Ranidae, Leptodactylidae, Dendrobatidae, Ascaphidae, Myobatrachidae, Hylidae, and Pelodryadidae for the families of frogs and semifossorial terrestrial, treetop arboreal, semiaquatic-terrestrial, terrestrial, scrub arboreal, and grass arboreal for the habitat groupings. Weak jumping species show little evidence of fatigue, whereas strong jumpers show a progressive decline in performance. Males tend to jump farther than equivalent-sized females, although the opposite or neutral situation occurs in a few species. Both inter- and intraspecifically, large frogs jump farther than small ones; however, a comparison of relative ability shows small frogs to be the strongest jumpers |

application of the monthly time step Pitman rainfall-runoff model to the Kafue River basin of Zambia
The study's output includes: a comprehensive database of hydrometeorological, physical catchment characteristics, landuse and water abstraction information for the Kafue basin; calibrated Pitman model parameters for the sub-catchments within the Kafue basin; recommendations for future work and data collection programmes for the application of the model. The study has also built capacity by facilitating training and exposure to rainfall-runoff models (specifically the Pitman model) and associated software, SPATSIM. In addition, the dissemination of the results of this study will serve as an effective way of raising awareness on the application of the Pitman model and the use of the SPATSIM software within Zambia and the region. The overall Pitman model results were found to be satisfactory and the calibrated model is able to reproduce the observed spatial and temporal variations in streamflow characteristics in the Kafue River basin |

Applying risk allocation theory in a large mammal predator-prey system elk-wolf behavioral interactions /
Understanding the behaviorally-mediated indirect effects of predators in ecosystems requires knowledge of predator-prey behavioral interactions, and the risk allocation hypothesis can be used to make predictions about such interactions. In predator-ungulate-plant systems, empirical research quantifying how predators affect ungulate group sizes and distribution, in the context of other influential variables, is particularly needed. We determined non-predation variables that affect elk (Cervus elaphus) group sizes and distribution on a winter range in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), using regression analyses of 1219 elk groups counted and mapped over 12 years prior to wolf (Canis lupus) recolonization. We next examined the relevance of these non-wolf-predation variables in the presence of wolves using logistic and linear regression on surveys of 513 1-km2 areas conducted over 2 years. Using model selection techniques, we evaluated risk allocation and other a priori hypotheses of elk group size and distributional responses to wolf predation risk while accounting for influential nonwolf-predation variables. We found little evidence that wolves affect elk group sizes, which were strongly influenced by habitat type. Following predictions from the risk allocation hypothesis, wolves likely created a more dynamic elk distribution in areas that they frequently hunted, as elk tended to move during the period of safety following wolf encounters in those areas. We predict that this distributional response to wolf predation risk should decrease the spatial heterogeneity of elk impacts on grasslands in areas that wolves frequently hunt. We also predict that this response should decrease browsing pressure on heavily-browsed woody plant stands in certain areas, which is supported by recent research in the GYE. This research highlights the importance of predator-prey behavioral interactions in large mammal systems |

Archiving websites general considerations and strategies /
Firstly, unlike other well-known media, the Internet does not simply exist in a form suited to being archived, but rather is first formed as an object of study in the archiving, and it is formed differently depending on who does the archiving, when, and for what purpose. Secondly, this means that there is an element of subjective creation in the archived material, so that methodical deliberations are necessary--in other words, the answers to why and how the archived material has been created. These conclusions form the starting point for the last section of the book, which, based on comprehensive tests of archiving software, discusses in depth the elements that can be included in an archiving strategy |

Aspects of the carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems of northeastern Smaland /
Boreal and temperate ecosystems of the northern hemisphere are important for the future development of global climate. In this study, the carbon cycle has been studied in a pine forest, a meadow, a spruce forest and two deciduous forests in the Simpevarp investigation area in southern Sweden (5705THN, 34055THE). Ground respiration and ground Gross Primary Production (GPP) has been measured three times during spring 2004 with the closed chamber technique. Soil temperature, soil moisture and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) were also measured. An exponential regression with ground respiration against soil temperature was used to extrapolate respiration over spring 2004. A logarithmic regression with ground GPP against PAR was used to extrapolate GPP in meadow over spring 2004. Ground respiration is affected by soil temperature in all ecosystems but pine, but still it only explains a small part of the variation in respiration and this indicates that other abiotic factors also have an influence. Soil moisture affects respiration in spruce and one of the deciduous ecosystems. A comparison between measured and extrapolated ground respiration indicated that soil temperature could be used to extrapolate ground respiration. PAR is the main factor influencing GPP in all ecosystems but pine, still it could not be used to extrapolate GPP in meadow since too few measurements were done and they were from different periods of spring. Soil moisture did not have any significant effect on GPP. A Dynamic Global Vegetation Model, a DGVM called LPJ-GUESS, was downscaled to the Simpevarp investigation area. The downscaled DGVM was evaluated against measured respiration and soil organic acids for all five ecosystems. In meadow, it was evaluated against Net Primary Production, NPP. For the forest ecosystems, it was evaluated against tree layer carbon pools. The evaluation indicated that the DGVM is reasonably well downscaled to the Simpevarp investigation area and it was used for future predictions of soil respiration, tree layer carbon pool and fast decomposing soil organic carbon pool, 2001-2100. NPP was also predicted for meadow. Two different climate scenarios were used. The fast decomposing soil organic carbon pools and soil respiration increased for all ecosystems, the tree layer carbon pools increased for the forest ecosystems and NPP increased in meadow in both scenarios, 2001-2100 |

Assessing habitat quality for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker
This project had 2 major objectives. The first objective was to assess how well the revised U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Foraging Habitat Guidelines depict good quality habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) at Camp Lejeune, NC. To accomplish this, I used multiple linear and logistic regression to examine the relationships between fitness, habitat use, home range size, and habitat characteristics described in the guidelines. I assumed that habitat characteristics that confer quality were related to higher fitness, greater habitat use, and reduced home range size. To a large extent, the guidelines are validated. Red-cockaded woodpeckers responded favorably to habitat that mimics the historical, mature, and fire-maintained pine forests of the southeastern U.S., characterized by high densities of large pines, low densities of small and medium pines, and a lush herbaceous groundcover. Variables positively associated with habitat use and fitness were associated with reduced home range size, and those negatively associated with habitat use and fitness with increased home range size. Percent herbaceous groundcover was a significant regressor indicative of quality in every model. The second objective was to assess how well USFWS foraging partitions represent habitat used by red-cockaded woodpeckers. I conducted home range follows of 23 groups of red-cockaded woodpeckers and estimated the percentage of each home range encompassed by partitions of varying radii. The percentage of the actual home range included in the partition increased as a function of partition radius. The standard 800 m circular partition, on average, included 91% of the home range, but significant variation existed between groups |

Assessing post-fire Douglas-fir mortality and Douglas-fir beetle attacks in the northern Rocky Mountains. Supplement / UC Davis site
Assessing post-fire Douglas-fir mortality and Douglas-fir beetle attacks in the northern Rocky Mountains. Supplement / RMRS site; includes main publication Douglas-fir have life history traits that greatly enhance resistance to injury from fire, thereby increasing post-fire survival rates. Tools for predicting the probability of tree mortality following fire are important components of both pre-fire planning and post-fire management. Hood and Bentz (2007) developed models for predicting the probability of Douglas-fir mortality and Douglas-fir bark beetle attack in the northern Rocky Mountains based on fire injury and stand characteristics. This supplemental field guide to RMRS-GTR-199 provides reference photographs to help quantify injury level for use with the post-fire Douglas-fir mortality and bark beetle attack models. It also includes descriptions for measuring each characteristic in the field |

Assessing the effectiveness of a Department of Conservation procedure for training domestic dogs to avoid kiwi /
An experiment assessed the effectiveness of a procedure used by Department of Conservation (DOC) conservancies to train domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) to avoid kiwi (Apteryx spp.). That procedure involves fitting a dog with a collar that delivers a brief electric shock the moment the dog contacts either a stuffed kiwi or a kiwi carcass placed in an open field. Thirteen dogs representing a range of breeds, sex and ages were sourced from a local pound. Each dog was initially trained to approach a manufactured burrow while being alone and attached to a modified retractable lead, the handle of which was fixed to a pole adjacent to the burrow. Each then received test trials where food, a stuffed possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), ferret (Mustela furo), or kiwi was driven into view from within the burrow, and a carcass of that animal was presented immediately outside the burrow. Those 12 dogs that ate the food and contacted each stuffed animal or carcass then received the DOC procedure, but in a different site to that used for testing. When the test trials were repeated, only one dog (8%) behaved in a manner suggesting that the DOC training had been effective. This failure of most dogs to avoid the very stimuli that had been associated with electric shock logically precludes a dog's avoidance of live kiwi in their natural habitats. Possible reasons why the DOC procedure is unreliable are considered, as are alternative practical techniques for training kiwi avoidance, such as inducing illness in a dog after it ingests food that has a strong kiwi flavour and/or odour |

assessment of culverts of fish passage barriers in a Montana drainage using a multi-tiered approach
Restriction or blockage of fish movement due to culverts may have important consequences to fish populations. Problems include the direct loss of critical upstream habitats, and the loss of connectivity with neighboring populations; however, culvert barriers may also serve to protect native species from nonnative species encroachment. Culverts can impede fish movement due to high water velocities, inadequate water depths, and excessive outfall heights among other factors. Most previous studies have focused on fish passage at only a few culverts and thus the extent to which culverts impede fish passage across large drainage basins is largely unknown. In this study, a multi-tiered approach was used to assess fish passage through culverts throughout the upper Clearwater River drainage, Montana. The FishXing software program was used to assess juvenile and adult fish passage at 46 culverts across a wide range of stream discharge. At a subset of 20 culverts, population sampling upstream and downstream of each culvert at low flow was used to determine the degree to which culverts are influencing relative abundance, size structure, and species presence. At a further subset of 10 sites, passage was measured directly at low flow by monitoring the movement of marked fish through culverts with differing physical characteristics. FishXing results indicated that 76-85% of the culverts were barriers, depending on the streamflow and lifestage assessed. The population sampling results indicated that there were a only few differences in relative abundance or size structure at the culverts sampled at low flow, and there was little evidence to suggest that species presence was different below versus above the culverts. The direct passage study results showed that some passage occurred at 90% of the culverts studied at low flow. However, 7 of the 10 culverts showed some degree of passage impedance. There was a moderately significant positive relationship between passage impedance and outlet height (r2 = 0.41, P = 0.047). In summary, the culverts were restricting passage to upstream habitats that may be important for spawning, growth, and survival, but they were generally not isolating populations nor serving as barriers to protect native species from non-native species encroachment |

Assessment of potential Chatham Island snipe habitat on Pitt Island /
After its 2006 meeting, the Chatham Island Snipe Recovery Group recommended that a habitat assessment of the predator-fenced portion of Ellen Elizabeth Preece Conservation Covenant (EEPCC) on Pitt Island be undertaken to determine its suitability for Chatham Island snipe (Coenocorypha pusilla). Fieldwork was carried out on 19-26 February 2007, both in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush, Rangatira (South East Island), where snipe are abundant. Soil samples were collected from six matched microhabitats in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush: beside rotting wood, beside petrel burrows, and beneath sedges, grass, herb mats, and ferns. Invertebrates were hand-sorted from the soil samples and identified to species where possible, and the biomass of soil-dwelling invertebrates (wet weight) was measured for each sample. Total numbers of invertebrates were very similar for the two islands: 2465 for Pitt Island and 2284 for Rangatira. There was also no significant difference between the islands in overall biomass (14.8 g for Pitt Island and 9.7 g for Rangatira) or biomass in any of the six microhabitats, although one microhabitat (soil beside petrel burrows) did have a higher mean number of individuals on Pitt Island than on Rangatira (n = 121 v. 26, respectively), due entirely to large numbers of tiny enchytraeid worms. It was found that there was abundant cover for snipe to nest, roost, and forage in EEPCC. We conclude that EEPCC should provide excellent habitat for Chatham Island snipe. There are no threatened invertebrate species known to be present in EEPCC that would be at risk following snipe introduction |

Assessment of the South Atlantic red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) population under a moratorium
Although decreasing red porgy data resulted in slight changes in assessment results, there are more data available for this species than other species in the snapper-grouper complex. For these lesser-studied species, reducing data could dramatically affect assessment capabilities. To investigate this, I compiled available data for these species and identified the stock assessment method used. I then predicted assessment capabilities for each species under a moratorium and if the MARMAP survey was eliminated. A moratorium could reduce assessment capabilities for 37 of the 73 species, and 63 species would require management based on key species. Removing MARMAP data would reduce assessment capabilities of eight species, many of which are economically important. There was an overwhelming need for a reliable catch-per-effort index, information that could improve assessment capabilities of 67 species. This index could be obtained by expanding the MARMAP survey, from a fishery observer program, or from commercial logbooks. By linking the red porgy stock assessment, an evaluation of sampling regimes and data loss during a moratorium, and the expansion of this stock assessment strategy to multiple species, managers will ultimately benefit from increased ability to manage stocks experiencing varying regulations and data availability |

Attitudes of resident assistants toward homosexuality and gay and lesbian students a study at a southeastern research university /
This purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of resident assistants at a large southeastern research university towards homosexuality and gay and lesbian students, as well as about the training they received on dealing with the issues that these students face. Attitudes in this descriptive census study were collected from 133 respondents by the distribution of a quantitative survey that utilized a Likert scale. In addition to their attitudes, the resident assistants were also asked to provide their gender, the amount of prior experience they had with lesbians or gay males, and the number of years they had been a resident assistant. Chi square analysis was performed to determine if there were any statistically significant relationships between the RAs attitudes and the demographic categories. Though two of the three variables included had been significant in other studies, there was little relation here between attitudes and gender, prior interactions with lesbians or gay males, or years of experience as an RA. The mean scores indicated that as a whole, the sample was neutral to somewhat positive towards lesbians and gay males, but when the mean scores were used in conjunction with the demographic variable chi squares, there were many participants who felt strongly negative about homosexuality. In addition to the discussion of attitudes, recommendations for improvements to the resident assistant training program, provided by both the participants and the researcher, and suggestions for further research are included |

Attitudes toward homosexuality at private colleges
The GLBT Attitude Assessment included the GLBT Far Proximity Scale and GLBT Close Proximity Scale. While the GLBT Far Proximity Scale indicated no mean difference from males toward the subgroups, the statistical analysis conducted on the GLBT Close Proximity Scale did indicate a mean difference. In addition, males who held conservative beliefs in their political and religious orientations were significantly different than those who held liberal and moderate beliefs. Respondents' differences presented in this study were within the neutral range, however, they had negative and positive trends. For example, the respondents' attitudes were least positive toward transgender people |

Attitudes towards commercial recreation on public conservation lands /
The demand for, and importance of, commercial recreation on public conservation lands in New Zealand has increased rapidly in the past 30 years and commercial recreation is now (generally) an accepted use in these areas. Some aspects of the provision of commercial activities and services are controversial, yet little research attention has been given to exploring people's attitudes towards them. This report reviews the "state of knowledge" about the attitudes of visitors toward the provision of commercial recreation services on public conservation lands. Study methods comprised a literature review, the synthesis of preliminary findings from a doctoral research project, and a focus group workshop which provided a "sounding board" for findings and conclusions. Thirteen topics were identified as relevant to consideration of commercial recreation: definition; growth and impacts; objections to commercial recreation (philosophical, threats to independent recreation, fear of "commercialisaton," differences between commercial and independent recreationists); conflict/compatibility between commercial and independent recreation; effects which relate to a mulitplicity of factors; the need to manage recreationists' expectations; providing opportunities--for whom?; cost-benefit analysis; equity of management for commercial and independent visitors; legislative issues; research quality; quality of tourism operations and concessions management; and the relationship with national identity. Overall, the study found that the topic is multi-dimensional, attracts differing and sometimes opposing views, and is potentially controversial. Recommendations for further research are provided |

Australian Digital Theses Program and the theory of disruptive technologies a case study /
The theory of disruptive technologies put forward by Clayton Christensen in 1997 has attracted significant attention. This case study tests the hypothesis that the theory is generalizable to new situations. It uses datasource triangulation by using document, statistical, and interview analyses (including investigator triangulation) to apply the theory to Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT) and finds that the Program may indeed be a disruptive technology in relation to academic libraries, universities, and to the publishing industry. However, it has greater potential to be disruptive in the latter, and to be a sustaining technology, as defined by the theory, in relation to libraries and universities |

Autopsy report for seabirds killed and returned from observed New Zealand fisheries, 1 October 2005 to 30 September 2006 /
Large numbers of seabirds frequent New Zealand commercial fishing waters. The accurate determination of the taxa of seabirds captured in New Zealand fisheries is vital for examining the potential threat to population viability posed by incidental fisheries captures. Further, the assessment of the age-class, sex, and provenance of captured individuals requires autopsy in the majority of cases. Between 1 October 2005 and 30 September 2006 (the 2005/06 fishing year), a total of 369 seabirds comprising 20 taxa were incidentally killed as bycatch and returned for autopsy by on-board New Zealand government fisheries observers. Birds were returned from longline, trawl, and setnet vessels. Seabirds returned during the 2005/06 fishing year were dominated numerically by three species: sooty shearwater Puffinus griseus, white-capped albatross Thalassarche steadi, and white-chinned petrel Procellaria aequinoctialis. Birds returned from longline fisheries had injuries consistent with being hooked or entangled in the bill or throat. Birds returned from trawl fisheries were mostly killed through entanglement in the net, with fewer individuals likely killed from a warp interaction. Mean fat scores were generally higher in birds from the 2005/06 fishing year than in previous years. Seabirds returned from the 2005/06 fishing year, and from trawl fisheries in particular, showed clear size-related differences in the likely cause of death, and offal appears to continue to be an attractant for many taxa. Examining the causes of mortality and types of injuries suffered by individual seabirds returned from fisheries is necessary to help reduce future seabird captures in New Zealand fisheries by identifying areas of risk |

Autopsy report for seabirds killed and returned from observed New Zealand fisheries, 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2007 /
Large numbers of seabirds frequent New Zealand commercial fishing waters. The accurate determination of the taxa of seabirds captured in New Zealand fisheries is vital for examining the potential threat to population viability posed by incidental fisheries captures. Further, the assessment of the age-class, sex and provenance of captured individuals requires autopsy in the majority of cases. Between 1 October 2006 and 30 September 2007 (the 2006/07 fishing year), a total of 324 seabirds comprising 22 taxa were incidentally killed as bycatch and returned for autopsy by on-board New Zealand government fisheries observers. Birds were returned from longline, trawl and setnet vessels. Seabirds returned during the 2006/07 fishing year were dominated numerically by two species (sooty shearwater Puffinus griseus and white-capped albatross Thalassarche steadi). Most birds (76%) returned from longline fisheries had injuries consistent with being hooked or entangled in the bill or throat, while most birds (70%) returned from trawl fisheries were killed through entanglement in the net. Warp interaction was the likely cause of death in 29% of trawl specimens. Mean fat scores were generally higher in birds from the 2006/07 fishing year than in most previous years, although mean fat scores were lower in 2006/07 than in 2005/06. Seabirds returned from the 2006/07 fishing year, and from trawl fisheries in particular, showed clear size-related differences in the likely cause of death, and offal appears to continue to be an attractant for many taxa |
