Baffin Bay narwhal
This report presents a review of the stocks of narwhal (Monodon monoceros) in the Baffin Bay area of the Northwest Territories. It begins with an overview of the historical catch in the Inuit narwhal hunt, then provides information about narwhal stocks & their delineation, stock size estimates, and narwhal population trends. The sustainable hunting rate is discussed with reference to reproductive studies and assumptions regarding the hunting rate. The final sections briefly discuss factors impacting on narwhal populations, overall stock status, and management considerations |

Baghdad burning girl blog from Iraq-- let's talk war, politics, and occupation /
Presents the Internet blog entries of a young Iraqi woman living in Baghdad as she chronicles the hardships and complexities of daily life and the intricacies of the political situation during the first year of the Iraqi 2003 invasion and the subsequent occupation. In August 2003, the world gained access to a remarkable new voice: a blog written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, whose identity remains concealed for her own protection. Calling herself Riverbend, she offers searing eyewitness accounts of the everyday realities on the ground, punctuated by astute analysis on the politics behind events. In a voice in turn eloquent, angry, reflective, and darkly comic, Riverbend recounts stories of life in an occupied city of neighbors whose homes are raided by U.S. troops, whose relatives disappear into prisons and whose children are kidnapped by money-hungry militias |

Bait station preferences of Norway rats /
|
|
Bait station preferences of ship rats /
Department of Conservation (DOC) surveillance programmes to detect rodent invasions on rodent-free islands currently involve observation of rodent interference with toxic baits in bait stations. Different DOC Conservancies use different types of bait station. We monitored the behavioural responses of 24 wildcaught captive ship rats (Rattus rattus) to four currently used bait station types; yellow plastic pipe, wooden box ("rat motel"), wooden tunnel, and white plastic Philproof bait stations. The bait stations contained non-toxic bait similar to the toxic bait used in surveillance programmes. More than 75% of the rats entered the yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, and wooden tunnel bait stations, but fewer than 10% entered the Philproof bait stations. Rats ate bait from the first three bait station types but not from the latter. The average amount of bait eaten per night by the rats that ate bait (0.8 g) was not enough for a lethal dose for 50% of the population if the baits had contained 20 ppm, or even 50 ppm, brodifacoum. On the basis of these results, DOC should use yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, or wooden tunnel bait stations rather than Philproof bait stations for surveillance for ship rats. However, other bait station types and the responses of kiore (R. exulans) and house mouse (Mus musculus) to different bait stations should be tested before any final decision is made on the best type to use in multispecies rodent surveillance programmes |

Barren-ground caribou distribution in late winter 2004, central NWT /
The area from Great Slave Lake to the Mackenzie delta and east to the Coronation Gulf area of Nunavut is the wintering range for several barren-ground caribou herds including the Cape Bathurst, Bluenose-West, Bluenose-East and Bathurst herds. Between February and April 2004 we surveyed this area in order to map the distribution of wintering caribou, as some communities had reported the absence of caribou from some of their typical wintering areas. We used fixed winged aircraft flown along predetermined transect lines to map the caribou distribution in survey areas. We found that caribou were widely distributed across the western NWT in late winter 2004 and that the highest concentration of caribou was found southwest of Great Bear Lake. Lower numbers of caribou were on the Arctic coast northeast of Tuktoyaktuk and a band of caribou was spotted extending southeast from Inuvik to northeast of Colville Lake. There were also caribou along the east side of Great Bear Lake to east of the Coppermine River. The Bluenose-West herd normally winters from the southern Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula and Husky Lakes area to Paulatuk and south to Great Bear Lake. However, in winter 2003-2004, most caribou appeared to winter in the area of Great Bear Lake, possibly in response to freezing rain along the coast and deeper snow than usual in the Inuvik Region. As expected, there was also some overlap found between the herds in the use of winter ranges |

Best practices for building and maintaining university-industry research partnerships a case study of two National Science Foundation engineering research centers /
Technology transfer involves the transfer of knowledge and inventions to the corporate sector, and has contributed to an increase in university and industry partnerships. The passage of the Bahy-Dole Act in the early 1980s, greatly assisted university-industry partnerships, generated the use of knowledge and inventions that came out of government sponsored research, and allowed universities to retain the intellectual properties instead of the federal government. In 1985, the NSF initiated the Engineering Research Center (ERC) Program to develop additional university-industry partnerships. The NSF intention is that Engineering Research Centers will become self-sustaining after the eleven years of NSF funding with an increase of research partnerships with industry and other federal agencies. This dissertation is a comparative case study of two NSF Engineering Research Centers. The Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), at Montana State University, that has graduated from NSF funding, and has become a self-sustaining research Center with 23 current industrial members. The second ERC is the University of Michigan, Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSystems, which is in the fourth year of NSF funding with 19 industrial members. The main question that was answered in the comparative case study is what are the best practices that resulted in building and maintaining industrial partnerships? Center faculty market the ERC through their publications, and presenting at conferences where industrial representatives are informed of Center research. Other methods are visiting company sites, producing quality research, inviting industrial personnel to the ERC to meet with faculty and to attend ERC workshops. The elicitation of the company research problem from industrial personnel by Center faculty is important for maintaining Center membership. Multiple champions within the company must be cultivated to insure against losing a champion to retirement or company transfer. The Center Director of the CBE publishes and travels extensively to conferences and provides the best leads, while the Center for WIMS faculty thrust leaders, and the UM Corporate Relations personnel provide the best leads for prospective new members. Industrial members mainly join an ERC for knowledge, to perform collaborative research with faculty, and to have access to faculty and students |

bibliographic database on stoats and weasels /
This paper describes an international bibliographic database of 1213 papers, notes, books and unpublished reports dating between 1877 and 2004. It includes all available information on stoats and weasels (Mustela erminea, M. nivalis and M. frenata) ranging from casual observations to high-powered analyses. The database is listed in a searchable, interactive form on a website, www.feral.org.au, and as a simple reference list at bio.waikato.ac.nz/staff/bibliography.pdf. The listing will be regularly updated, but this introductory analysis reveals some interesting general trends so far. (1) Most of the world literature on small mustelids (53% of 1213 entries) describes work done outside New Zealand before 1990. This international literature offers a very large resource to mustelid biologists in New Zealand, which we should not ignore and cannot afford to repeat, although it should be treated with caution. The database is intended to provide easy access to this important background information. (2) New Zealand is now the world centre for research on mustelids, especially stoats: more papers on stoats have been published here--mostly (243 of 321) since 1990--than in the whole of Europe over a much longer period. (3) The database illustrates some major differences in the type of papers published about small mustelids in different parts of the world, and historical trends in publication rates by geographic region (steady in Europe; declining in America and Russia; accelerating in New Zealand). It also provides a useful framework within which to examine some historical trends in conservation priorities within New Zealand |

Elsewhere in Sweden, where low population densities prevail, there may be similarities in population processes between M. pallipes and the other widely distributed diprionids with solitary larvae, which never have attained outbreak densities in Sweden. Interactions with other diprionids through shared natural enemies may be an important population process and may influence the distribution of outbreaks |

Biology and phylogeny of the Cassidinae Gyllenhal sensu lato (tortoise and leaf-mining beetles) (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae) /
The biological account and these phylogenetic results provide an opportunity for identifying some general trends and major innovations in the evolutionary history of Cassidinae. The alteration of the adult head from prognathy to hypognathy and the compaction of the body, legs, and various elytral-locking mechanisms are recurrent themes in adult morphology. Maternal care may have arisen once or twice. Seven trophic guilds are defined here for cassidine larvae. They arise from two large radiations of leaf-mining and exophagous-feeding, a minor radiation in cryptic rolled-leaf feeding, and small generic and sub-generic specializations in stem mining, leaf scraping, petalophagy, and leaf-shelter chewers. Fecal shield construction and retention appear to be correlated with innovations in life history and in larval and pupal morphology, and they may have played an important role in cassidine diversification |

Birds and burns of the interior West : descriptions, habitats, and management in western forests /
Cavity-nesting birds responded more favorably than open-cup nesting species. Trees weakened by fire attract bark and wood-boring beetles--an important food source for woodpeckers--and are also more easily excavated for nesting than green trees. Retention of large-diameter trees and snags allows for population persistence of cavity-nesting birds. Overall, a greater percentage of birds, both migrants and residents, showed a response to prescribed burns during the year of the treatment than in the year after. Fewer species responded 1 year after treatments, which suggests that the influence of prescribed fire on these birds may be short term. Responses to prescribed fire were variable for migratory birds, whereas residents generally had positive or neutral responses. We found that prescribed burn treatments not only destroy snags, but also recruit snags of all sizes. Managers are faced with a variety of options for fuels and fire management. Our results indicate that both prescribed burning and fire suppression influence habitats and populations of wildlife |

Birds and butterflies in Swedish urban and peri-urban habitats : a landscape perspective /
Urbanization is considered to be one of the largest threats to biodiversity although little is known about the effect of habitat fragmentation on native flora and fauna in urban areas in general, and in Sweden specifically. In this thesis, data have been collected using remote sensing analyses of 100 cities, bird surveys in 34 cities, and experiments have been used to answer specific questions regarding dispersal and reproduction in different urban habitats. The dual processes of infill development and expansion of cities threaten remaining unprotected urban woodlands. Results showed that between 1 and 40% (average of 20%) of the proportion of the city area were comprised of urban woodland. Urban and peri-urban (surrounding) woodlands covered an area larger than the total area of protected forests in Sweden and had higher amounts of dead wood than typical non-protected forests. In contrast to previous studies, this thesis showed that many bird species breeding in urban woodlands were strongly affected by the surrounding city or landscape composition. On a smaller spatial scale (200 m), adjacent habitats affected population density and nestling quality of great tits Parus major breeding within urban woodlands. Movement corridors were only used by butterfly habitat specialists, and grassland corridors of intermediate quality seemed to be most efficient to promote dispersal among habitat fragments. In this thesis, I show that Sweden have relatively high proportion urban woodlands; urbanisation does not necessarily lead to a homogenization of the bird fauna; urban habitats need to be well described in detail to allow comparisons among studies; bird faunas of local urban woodlands differ among regions and are strongly affected by composition of habitats both at city and landscape levels; movement corridors may be an efficient conservation tool if specifically managed to fit the autecologies of the species of conservation concern |

Bitterroot Valley of western Montana area economic profile /
This profile provides a description and assessment of the area economy of the Bitterroot Valley of southwestern Montana. Changing conditions and trends in the area economy over the course of the last twenty to twenty-five years are examined, including trends in population and employment growth and associated income changes and economic restructuring. Changing conditions in Ravalli County and the Bitterroot Valley are compared to those for the larger Rocky Mountain West region and nation as a whole. Various measures of the Bitterroot area economy also are systematically compared to similar measures for areas throughout the western United States having similar characteristics to the Bitterroot Valley. Two types of "peer areas" are selected for this purpose: 1) non-metro areas in the West nearby small and intermediate regional centers of 30,000 to 100,000 people, and, 2) non-metro areas nearby small and intermediate regional centers that are also nearby large concentrations of Forest Service lands |

Blogging politics a case study of the 2004 election /
Taking a pointedly partisan stance on national and state elections and issuing a running commentary on articles and issues in the mainstream and online press, Daily kos has established itself as the most highly trafficked, interactive, Democratic weblog online. To investigate the research question, my study compared activity levels and content on Daily kos before and after the 2004 election. The results of this comparison show that the activity levels increased following the election, while the content transited from campaigns and elections to policy and party. There were also indications that the interactivity of the Daily kos blog facilitated online community. Overall, these findings suggest that it is not the campaign and election-oriented content that sustains the momentum and popularity of political blogs like Daily kos; it is the invitation to engage the political process through democratic discussion |

Bolles collection on the history of London the collection of Edwin C. Bolles on the history of London from its founding to the 19th century
"Edwin C. Bolles, professor of English at Tufts College (now Tufts University) in the late 19th century, assembled a substantial focused collection of materials on Victorian London. These materials include not only conventional print sources but many pieces that are unique or quite rare: folio descriptions of the city from limited print runs, contemporary 19th century maps in various shapes and formats, illustrations and prints from the 17th through the 19th century, that capture a precious (and now largely forgotten) record of how the British represented this city. The digital archive represents a comprehensive and integrated collection of sources and resources on the history and topography of London. Texts, images, and maps in the Bolles collection are all interconnected. Together they form a body of material, heterogeneous in form, but homogeneous in theme, that transcends the limits of print publication and exploits the flexibility of the electronic medium. The digitized maps are linked to each other, to relevant source texts, and to illustrations of the locations as they appeared a the time or at present. Similarly, the texts are linked to the maps and the images, and so on"--"More about this collection" screen |

Botanical databases for conservation and development
This manual is an introduction to the use of databases in botanical projects. The material is presented in an uncomplicated manner, and very little previous knowledge is assumed from the reader--either about databases or computers. A demonstration program can be downloaded that provides an introduction to operating a database package: it has been designed to illustrate the principles of all main database operations. For practical applications, readers will have to obtain for themselves a database package program, which they can then use to build up their own databases following the principles described here |

Boundary definition for the Central Coast Integrated Management Area
Fisheries & Oceans Canada is currently defining large ocean management areas with the goal of developing integrated management plans for these areas. This report begins with an overview of criteria used in defining boundaries for integrated management areas and a review of marine ecosystem boundary systems & classification on the Pacific coast. It then proposes an area boundary for the Central Coast Integrated Management Plan large ocean management area. The basis for the boundaries is the use of scientific information to locate boundaries such that environmental characteristics on one side of the boundary differ significantly from those on the other. The reasoning & evidence behind the selection of each part of the area boundary are discussed |

Braided river ecology : a literature review of physical habitats and aquatic invertebrate communities /
A braided river is one that, over some part of its length, flows in multiple, mobile channels across a gravel floodplain. In New Zealand, many braided rivers remain in a relatively unmodified condition, but increasing demands for hydro-electricity generation, irrigation, gravel extraction and flood protection works are placing pressure on these systems. However, apart from a limited number of studies on the ecology of individual species or reaches, there has been little coordinated ecological research to assess the overall values and function of braided river ecosystems in New Zealand. This review summarises the international and New Zealand literature on braided rivers, with particular emphasis on benthic invertebrate ecology. Braided rivers typically experience short-term channel migration within the active bed and greater lateral channel migration across the entire floodplain in the longer term. Channel migration occurs because steep headwater tributaries supply highly variable discharges and mobile erodable substrates to the mainstem. Braided rivers typically possess extended floodplains, which may contain a mosaic of floodplain habitats ranging from highly unstable main-stem channels to stable spring complexes. Main channel aquatic invertebrate communities are frequently low in diversity and dominated by the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium spp., but also chironomids and elmid beetles. In contrast, floodplain springs can have highly diverse communities rich in amphipods, mayflies, caddis, snails and chironomids. Groundwater and floodplain pond habitats also occur frequently and can contain several specialist taxa. Braided rivers and their floodplains are spatially complex, temporally dynamic habitats with high landscape- and reach-scale biodiversity values. The challenge facing managers is to protect this biodiversity within the context of increasing human demands on the rivers. This report highlights the particular threats and management issues associated with braided rivers in New Zealand and identifies areas where future research is required |

"We are pleased to present the ninth edition of Braunwald's Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine as the hub of an ongoing, advanced learning system designed to provide practitioners, physicians-in-training, and students at all levels with the tools needed to keep abreast of rapidly changing scientific foundations, clinical research results, and evidence-based medical practice. In keeping with the tradition established by the previous editions of Braunwald's Heart Disease, the ninth edition covers the breadth of cardiovascular practice, highlighting new advances and their potential to transform the established paradigms of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We have thoroughly revised this edition to keep the content vibrant, stimulating, and up-to-date. Twenty-four of the 94 chapters are entirely new, including nine chapters that cover topics not addressed in earlier editions. We have added 46 new authors, all highly accomplished and recognized in their respective disciplines. All chapters carried over from the eighth edition have been thoroughly updated and extensively revised. This edition includes nearly 2500 figures, most of which are in full color, and 600 tables. We have continued to provide updated sections on current guidelines recommendations that complement each of the appropriate individual chapters."--Pref |

British Columbia earthquake response plan
This plan describes the responsibilities, organization, and concept of operations necessary for emergency response to a major earthquake in British Columbia. It is designed to react to the most serious subduction earthquake which has been forecast, and which would affect the south-western coastal regions of the province where more than half of the population lives. A smaller earthquake, whose damage could be more localized, is also the concern of this plan. The basic premise of this plan is that local governments remain responsible for managing and conducting their own emergency operations. The plan takes into account observations resulting from its evaluation in three major earthquake response exercises, and a changed provincial government structure. Appendices include a glossary and an overview of the earthquake threat in the province |

British Columbia longspine thornyhead fishery analysis of survey and commercial data, 1996-2003
This report presents an analysis of the biomass survey conducted annually 2001-03 on the deep water population of longspine thornyheads off the west coast of Vancouver Island (WCVI). It examines the survey data in the context of a coastwide longspine fishery that began in 1996 and extended northward from WCVI into two northern regions, Tidemarks and Rennell. Because the survey has limited coverage in space and time, that analysis is compared with similar analyses of commercial catch per unit effort data in WCVI & the two northern regions, where no surveys exist. It presents an integrated framework of three mathematical models for making these comparisons: swept-area biomass estimates, standardized catch rates with fixed effects for various factors, and swept-area biomass estimates with standardized vessel effects. The paper concludes with recommendations for planning future surveys, integrating data from surveys & commercial fisheries, planning future reductions in the commercial fishery, and improving the basic biological information available for this species |

In adjoining young and old forest stands, red-listed bryophytes and lichens were more abundant in the old stands. This difference disappeared when the amount of substrate available was taken into account. When the young stands were positioned north of the old, the bryophytes were equally frequent in both forest stages, indicating that the aspect of a clearcut matters. In conclusion, young forests have the potential to host a high diversity of species. Research on young natural and managed forests is needed to formulate science-based conservation strategies in managed forest landscapes |

Building competitive regions : strategies and governance - UW restricted
In recent years, the main focus of territorial policy has been on sustaining growth, not only to address relative decline, but also to make regions more competitive. Putting this in practice is complicated because different regions have different characteristics (urban, intermediate, industrial, rural, etc.), which imply specific policy and investment needs. This report assesses the strategies pursued by OECD member governments to address the competitiveness of regional economies and the accompanying governance mechanisms on which the implementation of these strategies rests. The report is principally based on findings from the series of reviews undertaken by the OECD Territorial Development Policy Committee at national and regional levels.--Publisher's description |

Building puzzles and growing pearls a qualitative exploration of determining aboutness /
Despite centuries of organizing information in libraries and other information institutions, little is known about how a document is analyzed to determine its subject matter. This case study is a qualitative exploration to better understand the processes involved in the conceptual analysis of documents. Conceptual analysis, an essential step in the subject analysis process, is the attempt by a cataloger or indexer to determine the subject matter, or the aboutness, of a document. The purpose of this research is to examine how interested yet untrained participants perform the tasks of conceptual analysis when no process is suggested. The study uses observation, think-aloud procedures, and in-depth, semi-structured interviews to understand the participants' subject determination processes. Transcripts of the analysis sessions and interviews were examined for underlying patterns of analysis. The aims of this research are to understand how individuals approach the process of determining aboutness, what bibliographic, content, or visual cues they use to find key aboutness data, and what patterns emerge during the subject determination process. This research begins an attempt to develop a model of conceptual analysis to be used in teaching, research, and praxis |

Burmese Buddhist imagery of the early Bagan period (1044-1113)
Buddhist imagery of Bagan widely regarded to represent the beginnings of "pure" Theravada practice that King Anawrahta, the first Burman ruler, actively encouraged. This simplistic view has limited the potential of the imagery to provide a greater understanding of Buddhist practice at Bagan, and subsequently, the cross-cultural interactions that may have been occurring. In this light the narrative sculptural imagery of the period is interrogated against the principal Mahayana and Theravada texts relating to the life of Gotama Buddha. This review, along with the discussion regarding potential agencies for stylistic change, reveals that during the early Bagan period, Buddhism was an eclectic mix of both Theravada and Mahayana, which integrated with pre-existing spiritual traditions. Towards the end of the early Bagan period, trends were emerging which would lead to a distinctly Burmese form of Buddhist practice and visual expression |
