INFO Deconstructing the racialisation experience of Asian Australians process, impact, and response /
In addition, the study demonstrates how Asian Australians cope with the stress of their everyday racialisation by drawing from their personal repertoire of discursive, cognitive and behavioural strategies. These, in combination with outside support mechanisms, make up what can be termed "everyday anti-racism" strategies. Racialisation provides valuable insights into when, how and why racialised subjects deploy these different strategies to negotiate, contest and bridge the constraints and boundaries imposed on them. The study offers an integrated model for understanding racialisation experience and lays the foundation for developing further the concepts of "everyday racialisation" and "everyday antiracism."
INFO Deconstructing the representation of AIDS in poetry
In poetry written about AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the contraction of the disease is continually divulged by explaining to which group the poet, as speaking subject, or the subject, as the individual about whom the poem is written, belongs. A homosexual, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the means of contraction of HIV to be gay sex. An intravenous drug abuser, as subject or speaking subject in AIDS poetry, confesses the sharing of syringes as the means of contraction. The subject or speaking subject's position within a socially-defined community or an identity group continually reaffirms the belief that AIDS only affects certain already-marginalized groups. Read individually, poems about AIDS continually marginalize the experience of those infected by failing to acknowledge the universality of AIDS from which, as Jacques Derrida explains, "no human is ever safe" (Derrida, 20). In my thesis, I will argue that the poetic representation of AIDS is informed by identity issues that resist universalizing the experience of AIDS

INFO Deer impacts on tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa) regeneration /
Tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa) is the predominant canopy tree species in extensive tracts of old-growth forest across much of the North Island, New Zealand. The regeneration of this slow-growing, late-successional species is crucial for canopy maintenance in these forests. The impacts of herbivory on tawa regeneration were assessed in tawa-dominant forests in the North Island. There was no significant change in seedling densities between 1997 and 2006 in 31 permanent plots at Otamatuna in northern Te Urewera National Park, despite intensive red deer (Cervus elaphus) control during this period. Similarly, the exclosure of deer from two larger plots over a similar period in the same area did not affect tawa seedling density. Seedling densities in 15 subplots of large permanent plots elsewhere in the region were not correlated with deer history, which varied from never present to c. 50 years of presence. Seedling populations of thousands per hectare are probably adequate to maintain tawa at current densities; however, populations of hundreds of seedlings per hectare may not be. Established seedling densities in northern Te Urewera National Park were relatively low, ranging from 500 to 1250 per hectare, suggesting there may be cause for concern there. Furthermore, seedling populations declined by 16%-82% over 22-40 years in four of the permanent subplots. Although the data analysed here did not implicate deer herbivory in these declines, previous exclosure studies over longer periods in the same region did. The overall impression from the equivocal results reviewed here is that herbivory may be impairing tawa regeneration in some places. Recommendations are made for further research requirements

INFO Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by actinomycetes /
The potential of some actinomycetes to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the effect of co-substrates, plants and other additives on their degradation and bioavailability was studied. A glass bead system for growth of PAH-degrading actinomycetes in liquid culture was developed and used for the screening of strains for biosurfactant activity and phenanthrene degradation in the presence of different co-substrates. Indication of biosurfactant production by all tested strains was obtained with hexadecane and rapeseed oil as co-substrates but not with glucose. Rhodococcus sp. DSM 44126 was identified as R. wratislaviensis and found to be able to degrade phenanthrene and anthracene. An actinomycete with a high capacity to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene was isolated from an agricultural soil and identified as Mycobacterium LP1. The catabolic activity of both strains was studied in liquid cultures and in soil. Several additives were also tested for their effect on PAH degradation in soils. The surfactant Triton X-100, but not wheat straw, promoted PAH degradation in a soil with aged creosote by increasing the bioavailability of the compounds. The presence of plants increased the proportion of active microorganisms and enhanced PAH degradation, likely due to root exudates provided by the plants. In a PAH-spiked soil, the addition of rapeseed oil (1% w/w) stimulated the degradation of anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene mainly as a result of abiotic processes, but negatively affected the degradation of phenanthrene and pyrene, probably due to limitations in nutrient and oxygen supply. Based on these results, a new sequential treatment in two steps for cleaning PAH-contaminated soil was designed and tested using four different PAH as model substances. The first step consisted of the inoculation with Mycobacterium LP1, favouring biological degradation of low-molecular-weight PAH, and the second step consisted of the addition of rapeseed oil, which promoted the abiotic transformation, and probably also the solubilisation, of the high-molecular-weight PAH

INFO Demography of Lewis's woodpecker, breeding bird densities, and riparian aspen integrity in a grazed landscape
Aspen (Populus tremuloides) riparian woodlands are extremely limited in distribution throughout the western U.S., yet these habitats have a disproportionate value to breeding birds. Aspen habitats are also considered prime sheep and cattle summer range, particularly in the semiarid Intermountain West. Such concentrated use has raised concern about the effects of sheep and cattle grazing on these habitats. We examined the influences of sheep and cattle grazing on aspen riparian woodlands and the associated breeding bird community. We had two objectives: 1) to determine how habitats grazed by sheep and cattle influenced the reproductive biology of Lewis's woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis), and 2) to determine how vegetation differed between sheep and cattle-grazed aspen riparian woodlands and how these differences influenced breeding birds densities. To examine what factors influenced nest-site selection in Lewis's woodpecker and whether these factors influenced nest survival, we quantified nest-site characteristics and monitored nests to determine nest fate. Lewis's woodpecker nest-site selection was positively influenced by nest tree diameter and tree density and negatively influenced by increasing amounts of bare ground and woody stems. However, these characteristics were not strong predictors of nest survival. Instead, nest initiation date and daily average temperature had the strongest influence. We then compared several vegetation characteristics between grazing treatments, conducted point transect surveys and used distance sampling techniques to estimate breeding bird densities. Cattle-grazed sites had more bare ground, less herbaceous cover, lower willow (Salix spp.) densities, and lower aspen densities than sheep-grazed sites. Differences in breeding bird densities between these grazing treatments reflected these vegetation differences, as ground-nesting species and riparian specialists had lower densities in cattle-grazed areas. Data from this study provide landowners and land managers with information on the habitat requirements of sensitive bird species needed to implement compatible grazing strategies in aspen riparian woodlands
INFO Den control of stoats (Mustela erminea) in Trounson Kauri Park, Northland
Locating natal stoat dens using trained predator dogs and controlling any containing female stoats and dependent young near a managed conservation area is potentially an effective management method, reducing the summer influx of young stoats into the ecosystem at a particularly vulnerable period for newly hatched kiwi chicks. A pilot study started in September 2001 was intended to test the effectiveness of targeting and controlling stoat dens in Trounson Kauri Park (a mainland island) and its environs. Once located by trained dogs, stoat dens had the specified number of Magtoxin pellets placed inside and all entrances were then sealed. Out of fifteen possible dens only two were effectively controlled with Magtoxin (with two others possibly controlled, although the animals from them were not recovered, and the female from another was trapped and killed). The main reason for the ineffectiveness of control was that not all tunnels to a den were located and blocked. It was also thought that Magtoxin might not be appropriate to use for some dens and might need to be used in conjunction with trapping. It was suggested that the timing of future den searching be shifted to October and November, and a combination of control methods be used

Biological diversity in the Rotorua Lakes, New Zealand, is under threat from aquatic pests, in particular pest fish species and various lake weeds. This report considers possible solutions to both out-of-district contamination and cross-contamination of the Rotorua Lakes. A network comprising ten decontamination facilities is proposed, with facilities located on public land: specifically, land managed by the Department of Conservation and road reserves. A number of decontamination methods are considered. The two methods that are recommended for further investigation are high-pressure, multi-nozzle water blasting, and a combination of dipping and ultrasonic irradiation. Incentives to use the decontamination facilities and construction and operational costs are considered. As a case study, a facility located at the southern entrance to Rotorua is considered. Possible costs to establish this case-study facility are also provided. It is proposed that a single case-study facility be established initially, and monitored for operational and strategic success

INFO Design and use of artificial refuges for monitoring adult tree weta, Hemideina crassidens and H. thoracica /
Artificial refuges were investigated for assessing populations of tree weta (Orthoptera:Anostostomatidae) in New Zealand by testing refuge design with adult Hemideina crassidens and H. thoracica in the laboratory, in a temperature-controlled glasshouse and in the field at six forest sites covering a range of altitudes and vegetation types. In laboratory and glasshouse tests, both species preferred refuges made from aged pine (Pinus radiata) to fresh pine, and willow wood (Salix alba) to pine. Neither species of adult entered holes 10 mm in diameter, but both entered holes 16 mm or 25 mm in diameter. Adult H. crassidens preferred galleries with tapering terminations to rounded terminations, refuges without Perspex observation windows, and refuges made from willow wood over those made of concrete. Adult H. thoracica preferred refuges made from concrete to willow wood. Adult mice (Mus musculus), which are potential predators of weta, were largely excluded from galleries with entrances <= 18 mm in diameter. In the field, the number of tree weta found in artificial refuges varied amongst the six sites. Weta first appeared 1.9 months after refuges were set, and reached maximum numbers after 2.14 months. Both species usually occurred singly in galleries and most frequently in long, upturned galleries. The number of weta in refuges varied little with height above ground, but there is evidence that this was positively correlated with the number of weta in natural cavities and was higher where rodents were controlled. There was no difference between the number of weta found in refuges in the interior of a forest and near the forest edge

INFO Desired future conditions of riparian areas on southeastern national forests
Finally, I designed, tested, and evaluated a public involvement process that identified public values for use in the development of DFCs for riparian areas on the Jefferson National Forest. I used a combination of alternative dispute resolution techniques and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a participatory decision-making tool. I used surveys before and after the riparian meetings to evaluate the effectiveness of the public involvement process. Survey respondents generally were middle-aged, well-educated, high-income males who were long-time residents of the area. Riparian meeting participants indicated that the DFC for riparian areas on the JNF should strongly emphasize water quality and quantity, protection of riparian-dependent species and their habitats, and maintenance of the integrity of the relationship between riparian areas and the surrounding environment. Participants indicated recreational and commodity uses of riparian areas could occur as long as they did not negatively affect the other, more highly valued characteristics of riparian areas. Participants felt that the meetings were fair, that diverse interests were represented, that they had enough information to participate in the process, and that it was a wise use of their time

INFO Determination of habitat preferences of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) on the rolling plains of Texas using GIS and remote sensing
The Rocker b Ranch on the southern rolling plains has one of the last sizeable populations of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in Texas. To investigate habitat utilization on the ranch, pronghorn were fitted with GPS/VHF collars and were released into pastures surrounded by a variety of fences to determine how fence types affected habitat selection. Habitat parameters chosen for analysis were vegetation, elevation, slope, aspect, and distances to water, roads, and oil wells. Results showed that pronghorn on the ranch crossed modified fencing significantly less than other types of fencing. Pronghorn selected for all habitat parameters to various degrees, with the most important being vegetation type. Habitat selection could be attributed to correspondence of vegetation type with other parameters or spatial arrangements of physical features of the landscape. Seasonal differences in habitat utilization were evident, and animals tended to move shorter distances at night than they did during daylight hours

Among the array of challenges facing the Central Asian region, illicit drugs have since the mid-1990s gradually risen to prominence. With continuously increasing opium production in Afghanistan and an increasing share of that production transited northward through Central Asia, the impact of the drug trade on the region is only worsening. The implications of the drug trade are multi-faceted: through addiction, epidemics, and related crime, it affects public health and societal security. Through its profit margin and sheer financial weight, it affects the economies of the region. By exacerbating and deepening political corruption and due to ensuing damage to the national and international legitimacy of governments, it affects political stability. Finally, through its role in the financing of terrorism and insurgency, it affects national security in the most basic, military sense of the term. Presently, illicit drugs therefore pose a clear and present danger to the security of states, societies and individuals in this region

INFO development and management framework for a new Octopus vulgaris fishery in South Africa
A new policy incorporating an operational protocol was developed for the establishment of new fisheries in South Africa. The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris was used as a candidate species for the project. The operational protocol consisted of a three-phased development framework, namely information gathering (Phase 0), an experimental fishery (Phase 1) and the final implementation of a commercial fishery (Phase 2). The present study focussed on phase 0 of this theoretical framework and protocol and was implemented by using a proposed octopus pot fishery in South Africa as a case study. Phase 0 included a desktop study, information gathering in the field, an economic feasibility study and the formulation of a Fishery Management Plan and experimental design for the fishery. Information gaps identified during the desktop study were addressed during field investigations into the population structure and biology of O. vulgaris along the southeast coast. Immature females were found to use the intertidal area to feed and grow before migrating to the subtidal area to mature and spawn. Mean size differed substantially between intertidal and subtidal areas, with larger octopus found subtidally. Age and growth trials using tetracycline as a marker showed that O. vulgaris deposit daily growth lines in their beaks. A genetic study showed that there is most likely only one panmitic population along the coast. The economic feasibility study indicated that a longline pot fishery could be feasible provided a 30% catch in 6600 pots/month is attained. Only existing, debt-free vessels should be used in this fishery. The Fishery Management Plan proposed in this study includes management measures such as effort limitation of licences and gear, size restrictions, vessel monitoring systems, and observer programmes. Based on the population dynamics and biology of O. vulgaris it is suggested that a precautionary approach to developing fisheries for this species in both the inter- and subtidal areas along the South African coast

INFO Development of a long-life bait for control of stoats
Three types of long-life stoat bait (polymer, paste, and gel) were formulated from natural and synthetic bait ingredients after extensive testing of potential ingredients. Feeding trials demonstrated that baits containing natural extracts from rabbit and chicken were preferred to bait that contained only processed meals and synthetic flavors. The addition of preservatives and waterproofing agents to improve bait longevity, lowered palatability markedly in all bait types. The texture of bait also affected the amount of bait eaten, with most stoats rejecting baits that were hard or needed to be chewed before they could be swallowed. In this study, significantly more long-life polymer and paste bait was eaten than gel bait. The polymer bait remained palatable after one month in the field. Although all long-life bait formulations tested were less palatable than fresh meat, most stoats (i.e. >=90%) consumed sufficient quantities of polymer and paste baits to receive a lethal dose (>5 g) if baits had contained a toxin. This was similar to the percentage of stoats eating pricked eggs, and better than consumption of non-pricked hen eggs. Methods for further increasing bait consumption and extending their effectiveness over time are being assessed, the ultimate goal being a long-life bait that is as palatable as fresh meat

INFO Diet of New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) : a summary /
New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) are increasing in number and expanding to recolonise much of their former range, resulting in a perceived conflict between fur seals and both commercial and recreational fisheries. To assess the level of interaction between fur seals and fisheries, a comprehensive understanding of fur seal diet is needed. This paper summarises what is known about fur seal diet in New Zealand, explains the advantages and disadvantages of various methods for assessing diet, and briefly looks at what information is available from other countries on marine mammal and fisheries interactions. Ten studies on fur seal diet have been carried out in New Zealand. However, most of these have been carried out in the Otago region. Since diet has been shown to vary between locations depending on a number of factors, findings from these studies cannot be applied to the whole of New Zealand. Furthermore, study design and method used to assess diet can greatly affect how data are interpreted and their comparability with other studies. Consequently, more information on fur seal diet is needed to appropriately address the potential for interactions in areas where fur seals have only recently become of increasing concern, and careful consideration needs to be given to study design, the methods employed, and interpretation of the data

INFO Different management regimes in a boreal forest landscape : ecological and economic effects /
Five management regimes were theoretically applied and evaluated in a 10,000 ha boreal forest landscape. Four regimes were designed to enhance conditions for biodiversity conservation, by establishing reserves and by modifying stand management. One regime was purely for timber production. Effects on biodiversity were assessed in terms of changes in population sizes within species or as number of species within ecological groups of the Red-listed species in the landscape. Assessments were based on the effects of management regimes on natural features of significance to animal and plant diversity. Effects on growing stock, harvest level, and economic return were assessed by means of the Forest Management Planning Package. Results indicate that biodiversity can be preserved only if the landscape is managed to satisfy the demands of species that require continuity in habitat conditions, and if management recognises fire-generated successions in boreal forest. Such management encompasses a system of patches managed so that important successional stages are always present in the landscape. The regime based on traditional silviculture did not encompass such features and, consequently, did not maintain biodiversity in the landscape. In the traditional silviculture regime, the future amount of deciduous trees was constant while the amount of old forest strongly decreased. As expected, this regime also generated the highest economic output. The decrease in harvested volumes and net incomes in the other regimes was approximately proportional to the reduction in non-protected, productive forest land

INFO Discards in the world's marine fisheries : an update /
Discards represent a significant proportion of global marine catches and are generally thought to constitute waste or suboptimal use of fishery resources. A number of United Nations resolutions have drawn attention to the need to monitor and reduce discards and unwanted bycatch, in order to assess the impact of discards on marine resources and promote technologies and other means of reducing them. This paper provides an update of the quantity of discards in the world's marine fisheries based on a fishery-by-fishery approach. The previous FAO estimate of discards at a global level, based on data prior to 1994, is now considered outdated. The present study re-estimates discards at a global level using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. Selected policy and technical issues are highlighted and suggestions made for future actions. A road map for achieving further precision in the global estimate is described and associated initiatives are outlined

INFO Disrupting law's categories transgenderism, feminism, and identity /
This thesis considers the question of how law understands identity and the question of how law should understand identity. Specifically it considers the effects when legal narratives categorise. To explore these abstract questions I use the concrete example of an identity which disrupts law's process of categorisation--transgenderism. I examine how the law categorises transsexuals and transgendered people in the areas of farnily law, administrative law, and anti-discrimination law. Integral to this exploration is a comparative analysis of how feminist narratives view and construct transgenderism. I argue that some feminist narratives mirror law's rigid and simplistic approach to the complexity of social identity. This thesis rejects such accounts and advocates that a more salient account of gender identity can be reached through a consideration of the work of poststructuralist feminist thinkers such as Judith Butler. Through understanding gender identity in less rigid terms it becomes possible to shift and transform present oppressive gender norms

INFO Distribution and abundance of muskoxen in the Beaverhill Lake area (2000) and the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary (1994), Northwest Territories /
This report provides details of the two aerial surveys used to describe muskox Ovibos moschatus abundance and distribution in the central barrens, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The first survey covered the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary in July and August 1994. The 1994 survey was a stratified transect survey using a float equipped fixed-wing aircraft. After an initial reconnaissance at 13.3% coverage, 3,565 kilometers of the transect were reclassified as the low-density stratum. Three areas were classified as high-density strata and re-flown at 40% coverage. The estimated number of adult muskoxen in the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary in 1994 was 1,095 281 Standard Error (Coefficient of Variation 0.26) and an average density of 1.8 per 100km2. This estimate was likely conservative. Based on all adults seen, including singles, the percentages of calves were 12.0% on transect and 16.4% off transect. In 2000, a fixed-wing aircraft was used to fly a transect survey with uniform coverage (about 20%) covering an area adjacent to the southwest corner of the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary and including the southwest part of the Sanctuary. Most of the area had not been previously surveyed for muskoxen. We counted 261 adult muskoxen and estimated 1320 OE 183 Standard Error (Coefficient of Variation 0.14) with an average density of 3.19 per 100km2. The proportion of calves on and off transect was 5.5%. The survey suggests that muskox distribution is continuous around the western, southern and eastern Thelon Sanctuary between Muskox Management Unit 02 in the NWT and Muskox Management Unit MX21 in Nunavut. The surveys and sightings suggest that muskox distribution has been spreading southwest during the 1980s and 1990s. We recommend establishing a management unit southwest of the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary with an annual quota of 11 muskoxen

INFO Distribution and population characteristics of lake trout in Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park implications for suppression /
Bull trout Salvelinus confluentus have declined since the establishment of nonnative lake trout Salvelinus namaycush in Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park (GNP). In an attempt to prevent further decline of this population, GNP is considering implementing a lake trout suppression program. I used ultrasonic telemetry to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of lake trout and gill nets to evaluate population characteristics and diet. Model simulations were used to predict lake trout responses to varying levels of suppression. I relocated 36 lake trout (508-859 mm total length) 1,137 times from June through November 2003 and March through November 2004. Lake trout had a narrow vertical distribution during all seasons in both 2003 and 2004, rarely occupying depths >30 m. During thermal stratification, lake trout occupied depths in the upper hypolimnion where mean temperature varied from 8-9C and dissolved oxygen was highest. Lake trout typically were suspended in the water column during all seasons except autumn. When spawning commenced in late-October, lake trout were associated with littoral habitats containing clean cobble and boulder substrates. The lake trout population had a broad age structure and a maximum age of 37 years. Males reached maturity earlier (12 years) than females (15 years), and total annual mortality rate for lake trout ages 8-27 was 13.2%. Growth rates were slow and relative weight values were among the lowest observed for lake trout throughout their range. Food habits were sampled from 254 lake trout, and 95% of the diet by weight consisted of fish prey. Model simulations indicated that substantial population reduction could be achieved with moderate exploitation (20-50%); however, this was more easily achieved as the size at which lake trout could effectively be captured was reduced. Simulations suggested that recruitment could be reduced to a level where adults are not being replaced at low exploitation (10-30%). These data will allow suppression efforts to be focused at times and places that will maximize efficiency, and population simulations suggest that substantial reduction of the lake trout population is feasible. Ultimately, results from this study should promote recovery of bull trout in Lake McDonald

Little is known about the taxonomic and conservation status of low-altitude populations of New Zealand grasshoppers (Acrididae). We examined the extent of differences between populations belonging to three groups: Sigaus piliferus, the Brachaspis nivalis complex, and the Sigaus australis complex. There is evidence that the North Island species S. piliferus falls into two groups: individuals in the Tararua Ranges and those north of the Manawatu Gorge. In the South Island, the B. nivalis complex is made up of two subgroups: from central Canterbury to Marlborough, and from south Canterbury to north Otago. There are four subgroups within the S. australis complex: one in central Canterbury and three in Otago. There are also several morphologically distinct populations within the B. nivalis and S. australis complexes, but further work is needed to fully describe these forms. When managing these grasshoppers, it is important that this geographic and morphological variation is considered and represented within management units

INFO Does a toxic fungal endophyte of tall fescue affect reproduction of takahe on offshore islands? /
Tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix) is a cultivated grass that in New Zealand is often infected with a fungal endophyte known to be toxic to livestock and other wildlife including birds. We determined whether tall fescue was present on two offshore islands (Maud and Tiritiri Matangi) where endangered takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) have been introduced and are known to suffer from high rates of egg infertility and poor hatching success. Despite extensive surveys, tall fescue was not observed on either island. Takahe on these islands fed almost exclusively on introduced grasses, particularly cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) and Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus), but none of these grasses are known to have toxic endophytes associated with them. Hence other factors must be responsible for the low reproductive success of takahe on islands. However, tall fescue is widespread throughout mainland New Zealand and managers must monitor for its presence to prevent its establishment on islands

INFO Don't ask, don't tell a costly and wasteful choice /
Since the current policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was adopted in the early 1990s, several changes have taken place which call into question the policy's validity. Firstly, the argument proponents of the ban use to justify it, namely that cohesion would suffer if admitted homosexuals were allowed to serve, has been undercut by social science analyses on the correlation between cohesion and performance. Their argument has also been undercut by empirical evidence from several nations that have lifted all restrictions on homosexual service, yet have suffered no decrease in cohesion or performance, despite the reticence of their respective militaries to lift the bans. At the same time, the US public has moved toward a greater acceptance of the notion of admitted homosexuals serving in the military, with 79% approving in a December 2003 Gallup Poll, including 91% of all Americans age 18-29. Evidence also indicates the current policy costs at least $40 million per year just to replace those who have been discharged due to their sexual orientation. Other costs include wasted human resources at a time of critical shortfalls in many specialties essential to the ongoing Global War on Terror, and the immeasurable cost of sanctioned unjustifiable discrimination by the US Government. The time to lift all restrictions on homosexual service in the US Armed Forces has come

INFO Dying speeches & bloody murders crime broadsides collected by the Harvard Law School Library
Just as programs are sold at sporting events today, broadsides, styled at the time as "Last Dying Speeches" or "Bloody Murders," were sold to the audiences that gathered to witness public executions in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. These ephemeral publications were intended for the middle or lower classes, and most sold for a penny or less. Published in British towns and cities by printers who specialized in this type of street literature, a typical example features an illustration (usually of the criminal, the crime scene, or the execution); an account of the crime and (sometimes) the trial; and the purported confession of the criminal, often cautioning the reader in doggerel verse to avoid the fate awaiting the perpetrator

INFO dynamics of cavity excavation and use by the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis)
Quantification of cavity excavation produced strong empirical support for the ecological constraints model for the evolution of delayed dispersal in the red-cockaded woodpecker. The long times required for cavity excavation select for competition over breeding vacancies in established territories and against excavation of cavities in unoccupied habitat. Duration of excavation varies between woodpecker populations, but may require over 13 years in longleaf pine and over 10 years in loblolly pine. Duration of excavation is extremely variable. Much of the variation is due to variation in effort by excavating woodpeckers, which is in turn related to the need for new cavities in relation to the number of available cavities on a territory. An average of only 11% of an individual's time budget is devoted to excavation, and only one individual per group makes significant contributions to excavation. Once completed, cavities are used for periods that may exceed fifteen years. Cavities in longleaf pine are used for significantly longer periods than cavities in loblolly. Whereas cavities no longer used as nests are abandoned altogether in loblolly, they are still roosted in for many years in longleaf. Final abandonment of longleaf cavities appears to be related to cavity loss. Quantification of cavity turnover revealed that three of the study populations (MACK, CNF, and CL) were stable in cavity numbers over the study period, while a fourth (FB) underwent alarming declines. The continued use of restrictors and artificial cavities, and the protection of old-growth upon which the woodpeckers depend for excavation, are recommended
INFO Dynamics of kahikatea forest remnants in middle North Island : implications for threatened and local plants /
The probability that threatened or local plant species will be present in any remnant stand of kahikatea-dominated forest depends on the regional species pool, if the stand fulfills the requirements of candidate species and if the stand has been a persistent part of the landscape
INFO dynamics of multiple dimensions of identity for lesbian college students
Regardless of whether identity was externally or internally constructed, the participants were most aware of interactions between sexual orientation and gender. Sexual orientation typically contributed to a more complex understanding of gender. Consistent with queer theory, the participants challenged the causal relationship between biological sex and gender. Interactions between sexual orientation and identity dimensions such as race, culture, religion, and social class greatly varied among the participants
