Finally, the general distribution of earthquakes furnishes no evidence for the existence of a continuous deep-lying structure traversing the southern part of the Sierra Nevada. While the possibility of the existence of such a structure has not been excluded, practically all of the evidence upon which such a speculation might be based has been removed. Any relation between activity in this region and the activity in the nearby White Wolf Fault region must instead be explained by means of a mutual transfer of strain between systems of different trend and character. The computer programs used for the location of the earthquakes reported in this study are discussed in Appendices A and B

INFO Ecological regions of North America toward a common perspective
This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions

INFO ecological study of reintroduced Arabian oryx in the Uruq Bani Maarid Protected Area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
This study was conducted in the Uruq Bani Maarid Protected Area, on the western edge of the Rub al Khali of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The dispersal of different groups of Arabian oryx Oryx leucoryx (Pallas, 1777) was investigated, along with the seasonal range use patterns of the animals. The dispersal distances from the release site stabilised after a period of one year. The animals show seasonal differences in their range use patterns, associated with changes in their mobility. The dynamics of the relationship between the oryxes and their habitat were investigated. The structure and the condition of the vegetation, as well as some climatic variables were important determinants of seasonal habitat use. The diurnal activity patterns of the animals correspond with that characteristic of ungulates generally and the animals showed seasonal changes in their feeding preferences. The productivity of the population was high during the study period, with 34 live births, while six of the reintroduced animals died. Population viability analysis, however, shows that the population is vulnerable over the medium term (100 years) and that management should target the juvenile and especially adult females as they are keys to population growth and recovery

Morels are prized edible mushrooms that fruit, sometimes prolifically, in many forest types throughout western North America. They are collected for personal consumption and commercially harvested as valuable special (nontimber) forest products. Large gaps remain, however, in our knowledge about their taxonomy, biology, ecology, cultivation, safety, and how to manage forests and harvesting activities to conserve morel populations and ensure sustainable crops. This publication provides forest managers, policymakers, mycologists, and mushroom harvesters with a synthesis of current knowledge regarding these issues, regional summaries of morel harvesting and management, and a comprehensive review of the literature

INFO Ecosystem engineering beaver and the population structure of Columbia spotted frogs in western Montana /
Beavers (Castor canadensis) are considered ecosystem engineers, altering hydrologic regimes, ecosystem processes, and modifying community structure. Effects of beaver on the spatial pattern of lentic habitat and populations using those habitats have not been examined. I used a landscape database and eight microsatellite markers to compare the scale and pattern of lentic sites, their occupancy, and population structure by Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) between watersheds with and without beaver activity. Across all watersheds frog breeding sites were more clustered than the underlying pattern of lentic habitat. Beaver watersheds had four times as many lentic and breeding sites than non-beaver watersheds. Non-beaver watersheds often had only one frog breeding site. Frog breeding sites were more dispersed within beaver drainages. In addition, frog breeding sites were evenly distributed across the elevational gradient in beaver watersheds while they were centered above the watershed midpoint in non-beaver watersheds. Columbia spotted frog breeding sites were more dispersed within drainages with evidence of beaver presence than would be expected given the configuration of the underlying lentic habitat and have persisted despite being separated by distances larger than its dispersal ability. The genetic divergence seen within watersheds revealed that landscape configuration affected the fine scale population structure of Columbia spotted frogs. Landscape patterns of breeding sites were reflected in the presence and strength of isolation by distance equilibriums and the overall level of population subdivision within watersheds. Watersheds with beaver presence and an average distance of less than five kilometers between breeding sites showed higher levels of connectivity than did non-beaver watersheds with an average distance of more than five kilometers between breeding sites. More importantly, short beaver watersheds had lower levels of genetic divergence between breeding sites than those in long non-beaver watersheds separated by the same distance, even when distances were within the commonly observed dispersal ability of the frogs. Typical beaver watersheds in southwestern Montana with similar habitat configurations are likely composed of a single population, while non-beaver watersheds likely contain a single or a few isolated populations. Careful consideration of potential population effects for species dependent upon habitat beaver create is required

INFO Efecto de la fragmentacion del bosque nativo en la conservacion de Oncifelis guigna y Pseudalopex culpaeus en Chile central
Chilean native forests have been replaced by plantations, generating a mosaic of native fragments of different size embedded in a matrix of farms and plantations. This landscape transformation could be affect habitat viability for wild carnivores like Oncifelis guigna and Pseudalopex culpaeus. To determine the potential impact of habitat fragmentation over the species, we evaluated their pattern of habitat use. The study was carried out in Los Queules National Reserve, native forest fragments closer and in pine plantations surrounding the Reserve (35059 S, 72041 W). Habitat use was assessed through visit to scent-stations. Around each scent-station we characterised vegetation structure and composition and its distance to large native forest, creeks and roads. Oncifelis guigna preferred habitats with dense covers, distant to roads and near to large native forest, being restricted to this habitat. In the other hand, P. culpaeus used opened habitat, close to roads, employing extensively pine plantations. Because O. guigna is restricted to forest, we used a metapopulation approach to infer its extinction probability in protected areas of central Chile. Metapopulations were classified depending on size and isolation degree of native forest fragments. Only one metapopulation composed by Nahuelbuta National Park and native forest fragments surrounding it, would be viable in the long-term. Metapopulation composed by Los Queules and Los Ruiles National Reserves could survive only in a short to medium term. Nevertheless, both populations depend on native forest fragments outside protected areas, which are mainly property of forestry companies. Therefore, due its importance for O. guigna survival, only through a protection program of native forest fragments close to protected areas, involving non governmental and governmental organisations, we may effectively conserve O. guigna in central coastal zone in Chile. On the other hand, P. culpaeus, being generalist would be less affected by habitat transformation

INFO effect of elephant utilisation on the Sterculia rogersii and Adansonia digitata populations of the Kruger National Park
This study assesses elephant induced damage and mortality of baobab and common star-chestnut trees in the northern Kruger National Park. Comparisons are made between the populations north and south of the Luvuvhu River. The density, population size and age structure are estimated. The population structure of neither species has been shaped by elephant utilisation. While the baobab population has a healthy age distribution, that of the star-chestnut population shows that recruitment has declined in recent decades. Utilisation has been found to be higher in the south as a result of higher elephant densities, although recently damage has been greater in the north. Damage increases with tree size. The mortality of baobabs is lower than in other areas where elephants and baobabs co-exist. Elephants are not playing a significant role in mortality of either tree species and management of factors other than elephant is required to improve regeneration rates of these species

INFO effect of mercury on the feeding behavior of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas)
Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were exposed to mercury (1.69, 6.79, and 13. 57 [micron]g/l HgCl2; 10 d exposure) and afterwards tested using various metrics of foraging ability while feeding in a vegetated habitat. Among the foraging metrics were foraging efficiency, capture speed, and the ability to learn and retain information regarding habitat characteristics. Comparisons with control fish and fish from the two highest exposure groups revealed consistent performance deficits in foraging efficiency and capture speed. However, no treatment effects on learning were detected. In determining the underlying proximate cause of the foraging deficits, it is believed that the greater pause time exhibited by treatment fish while foraging was the main cause of treatment differences. In the future, behavioral studies will continue to allow toxicity testing of environmentally relevant variables such as those used by behavioral ecologists. Such tests, when combined with tests of field collected specimens, could prove powerful in linking laboratory toxicity to toxicity in wild populations

INFO effect of sodomy laws on lifting the ban on homosexual personnel three case studies /
This study examines the impact of active sodomy laws on the elimination of bans against homosexual personnel in three different contexts. In each case, a ban against homosexual service was lifted while sodomy laws were still in effect. In two instances--those of Australia and South Africa--sodomy laws were overturned within a few years of the elimination of bans on gay and lesbian personnel in the Australian and South African Defence Forces. In one instance--the Miami Beach Police Department--the state sodomy law has remained in effect long after gays and lesbians have been allowed to serve openly. The evidence clearly suggests that in these two foreign militaries and in a domestic police department, homosexual personnel were successfully integrated into either police or military service despite the existence of an active sodomy law when each respective ban was lifted

INFO Effectiveness of stand-scale forest restoration, Siskiyou Mountains, Oregon
This case study documents the effectiveness of stand-scale forest restoration activities undertaken in the "Penny Stew" project on federal land in the central Siskiyou Mountains of southwest Oregon. Its dual purpose is to 1) define reference conditions and build a site-specific case for restoration through multi-scale analysis of historical ecology (Chapter III) and 2) demonstrate streamlined monitoring protocols that practitioners can use to adapt restoration practices over time (Chapter IV). Discussion of methodological efficacy in the monitoring report offers implications for FEAT-FIREMON Integration (FFI), a fire effects monitoring and data analysis software package currently under development for use by wildland fire managers. Finally, this analysis synthesizes findings from reference analysis and monitoring results to assess the degree to which the Penny Stew project meets restoration objectives, and it recommends further action including application of management-ignited prescribed fire and sustained monitoring in light of that synthesis (Chapter V)

INFO Effectiveness of the Victor snapback trap for killing stoats
The Animal Welfare Act 1999 enables traps that are considered unacceptably inhumane to be prohibited. This provision has resulted in an increased awareness of how well kill traps actually kill the intended target species. As part of an ongoing trap-testing programme, Landcare Research tested the killing performance of Fenn traps and showed that they were ineffective at killing stoats (Mustela erminea), with most captured stoats still conscious after 5 minutes. Because Fenn traps are used extensively for trapping stoats in New Zealand it is desirable that a humane alternative is found. A potential alternative is the Victor snapback trap. Although these traps are designed for capturing rats, they have been successfully tested for capturing and killing short-tailed weasels (Mustela erminea) in Canada. These traps were tested on captive wild-caught stoats, using a plastic shroud to direct and align the stoat at the front of the trap. To pass the test the trap had to render at least 13 of 15 stoats irreversibly unconscious within 3 minutes. Seven stoats were rendered unconscious rapidly (i.e. <30 seconds). However, three were either not struck across the head or managed to escape because the low clamping force exerted by the trap was not sufficient to securely hold a conscious animal. Because three captures failed to result in the stoats being rendered unconscious within 3 minutes, the trap failed the test. A humane alternative to the Fenn trap is still required

INFO Effects of bottom fishing on Georges Bank
In order to gain a better understanding of how bottom fishing impacts benthic organisms, a team of researchers from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) set out in 1994 to survey the benthic megafaunal community of Georges Bank. This project's study area was confined to the gravel habitat that straddles the boundary between the U.S. and Canadian exclusive economic zones (EEZs). This area was selected because previous research has indicated that it serves as an important nursery for juvenile cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Within this region, trawl marks appearing in side scan sonar images were counted in order to identify sites with different levels of bottom fishing disturbance. Based on this information, six study sites were pinpointed and classified as either "disturbed" or "undisturbed." At these sites, benthic dredge samples have been collected on a nearly annual basis. In addition, photographs and videos of the sea floor have been recorded using the SEABOSS system, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and manned submersibles. Data from this project have revealed significant differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in terms of abundance, biomass, species diversity, and benthic community structure. In December 1994, three large sections of Georges Bank, comprising an area of 17,000 km2, were closed to all types of fishing gear capable of retaining groundfish. Since one of our most disturbed study sites was located within a closed area, this event provided a unique opportunity to investigate the changes that occur as a benthic ecosystem recovers from chronic fishing impacts
INFO Effects of clearfelling, slash removal, and prescribed burning on amounts of plant nutrients in biomass and soil /
Total amounts of plant nutrients in biomass, humus, and mineral soil were determined in two old Norway spruce ecosystems in central (Garpenberg) and northern Sweden (Flakatrask). Measurements were repeated 1, 4, 10, and 16 years after clearfelling on plots on which slash was retained, removed, or burnt. Half of each plot was planted with Norway spruce, half with Scots pine. Both total and plant-available nutrient elements were determined in the mineral soil to 50 cm depth. Different analytical methods for plant available nutrients were used and the relationship between them was calculated. Total amounts of nitrogen in the humus layer and biomass had decreased by ca. 840 kg ha-1 four years after clearfelling on plots with retained slash at Garpenberg, and by ca. 840 kg ha-1 on burnt plots. Corresponding losses at Flakatrask were ca. 50 kg and 340 kg N ha-1. Losses of total phosphorus at Garpenberg were ca. 42 and at Flakatrask 17 kg ha-1 on plots with retained slash, ca. 39 and 35 kg ha-1 on burnt plots. During thy first four years after clearfelling at Garpenberg, losses of potassium were ca. 100 kg ha-1 both on plots with retained slash and on burnt plots. Corresponding losses at Flakatrask were ca. 60 and 100 kg ha-1. More than 70% of potassium was lost from burnt plots during the first year after clearfelling at both sites. Clearfelling significantly increased pH (95% confidence) in many humus samples and most samples of mineral soil at both sites. pH generally increased less on plots with slash removed than on those with slash retained, but differences were not significant. Time required for litter to lose its structure in the mor layer was estimated as the quotient between amounts of litter ocularly identified in the mor layer, and litterfall. For needle litter this was 1.7 years at Garpenberg and 4.1 years at Flakatrask. Thus the litter disintegration rate far exceeded that from other investigations of mass loss of spruce litter in litterbags incubated on the forest floor. Residence times of soil organic carbon, estimated as a quotient between total soil carbon to 50 cm depth and carbon in annual above- and belowground litter production, were 9.5-28 years at Garpenberg and 16.5-42 years at Flakatrask. Belowground litter production was estimated from literature concerning the quotient between below- and aboveground litter production. Other literature estimates of residence times for organic carbon in forest soils were higher than those obtained in the present investigation. Four years after clearfelling, the carbon pool had decreased by ca. 18 Mg C ha-1 at Garpenberg and 13 Mg C ha-1 at Flakatrask for plots with retained slash. For burnt plots, decreases were ca. 20 and 28 Mg C ha-1 at Garpenberg and Flakatrask, respectively
INFO Effects of complete deep-soil cultivation on initial forest stand development /
Long-term effects of complete deep-soil cultivation on forest growth and yield were evaluated in an experiment initiated in 1988 on six different sites in Sweden. Complete deep-soil cultivation was compared with less intensive site preparation. Ten years after the start, growth, stand structure, damage, and survival were evaluated. Conifer seedling growth and survival on sandy sites, frost-prone sites or both, generally increased following deep-soil cultivation compared to patch scarification. Silty sites exposed to summer frost were also positively affected by deep-soil cultivation, although the risk of frost-heaving increased. For deciduous seedlings the result varied, but survival in birch was improved by deep-soil cultivation. On former farmland, deep cultivation may effectively control competing vegetation. Deep-soil cultivation in strips over half the area appeared to be as efficient as complete treatment. This has financial and environmental implications. Deep cultivation reduced variability in tree size, since it provided a more uniform environment during stand establishment. When long-term effects of complete deep-soil cultivation on forest growth and yield are evaluated, the significant differences in stand establishment demonstrated in the study must be considered. Future revisions of the experiment must address the question of the Iong-term effects of intensive soil cultivation on forest growth and yield
INFO effects of disturbance on aquatic breeding amphibians within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Amphibians represent an important aspect of wetland ecosystems. Since the 1990's, many herpetologists have supported the idea that amphibian population declines have become more frequent. Destruction and degradation of aquatic and terrestrial habitat have been implicated as important causes of amphibian population declines. While many amphibian species rely on both aquatic and surrounding terrestrial habitat for continued persistence, current regulations often provide an inadequate degree of protection in these terrestrial areas. Some states have adopted limited buffer zones to offer additional protection to these important terrestrial regions. The major goal of this study was to determine if the distribution and abundance of aquatic breeding amphibians within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is related to various surrounding habitat and water quality characteristics. The results of the current study indicate that certain species may be more strongly impacted by land-use in areas most directly adjacent to aquatic breeding sites

INFO Effects of herring gulls and great black-backed gulls on breeding piping plovers, South Monomoy Island, Massachusetts
Fewer large gulls were observed near prenesting plovers, plover nests, and plover broods than near random plots. Fewer large gulls were observed in plover nesting areas than in unused areas when the nesting areas were defined by all area within 100-m or 500-m of a plover nest. We argue that this apparent spatial separation between piping plovers and large gulls is due to different habitat preferences among the species. We found that gull removal on South Monomoy Island did not result in increased piping plover reproductive success, and large gulls did not affect breeding piping plovers on South Monomoy Island from 1998-2000

INFO Effects of low flow on dwarf galaxias and their habitat in the Wairau River /
Trustpower's proposed power scheme on the braided Wairau River, Marlborough, New Zealand, would divert up to 40 m3/s of water through a 50-km canal, leaving a residual flow of 10-20 m3/s in the affected reaches of the river. Two-dimensional flow modelling has predicted that at flows of 15-20 m3/s, the flow in the affected reaches would be largely confined to the main channel, effectively eliminating shallow side-braid habitat, with an associated decline in available habitat for dwarf galaxias (Galaxias divergens), a small endemic fish that inhabits these sidebraids. This report investigates changes in a population of dwarf galaxias as flow declined over one summer season, in habitats provided by a seep-fed side-braid of the Wairau River. The study confirmed that as flow dropped to approximately 20 m3/s, habitat availability was reduced, and the braid became isolated from the main channel. This occurred alongside an apparent natural reduction in the abundance of dwarf galaxias, from a post-spawning abundance of predominantly juvenile fish. The ecology of dwarf galaxias appears to enable them to tolerate natural low-flow events. However, had this flow reduction occurred earlier in the year (or been sustained year round), it may have had a negative impact on the dwarf galaxias population. Side-braid habitat is likely to be vital for the survival of dwarf galaxias in the Wairau River, providing habitat, abundant invertebrate food and refuge from both physical and biological disturbances. Side-braids also appear to provide ideal foraging habitat for black-fronted terns (Sterna albostriata) which feed on dwarf galaxias and other small fishes during their breeding season. Ensuring that water abstraction at the proposed water intake does not cause the frequency and duration of occurrence of flows <= 22 m3/s to exceed natural rates should avoid exacerbating low-flow impacts on dwarf galaxias and foraging area for black-fronted terns downstream

INFO effects of patch shape and connectivity on nest site selection and reproductive success of the indigo bunting
A second objective of my study was to evaluate the efficacy of conservation corridors for disturbance-dependent bird species. Conservation corridors have become a popular strategy to preserve biodiversity and promote gene flow in fragmented landscapes, but corridors may also have negative consequences. I tested the hypothesis that corridors can increase nest predation risk in connected patches relative to unconnected patches. Nest predation rates increased significantly in connected patches compared to unconnected rectangular patches, but were similar between connected patches and unconnected edgy patches. This suggests that the increase in predator activity in connected patches is largely attributable to edge effects incurred through the addition of a corridor. This is the first landscape-scale study to experimentally demonstrate the potential negative effects of conservation corridors

INFO Effects of selection logging on amphibian diversity and abundance in shade-tolerant hardwood forests of Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario
Despite amphibians' widely acknowledged importance in forest ecosystems, they are rarely included in forest management plans. Very little is known about the effects of, or amphibian response to, timber management. To determine whether and if so, how selection logging affects amphibians in shade-tolerant hardwood forests, I compared amphibian habitat concurrently with amphibian diversity and abundance in managed (logged) and unmanaged (unlogged) forest stands in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. Selection logging significantly altered aspects of shade-tolerant hardwood forest habitat on which amphibians are known to depend. However, with the exception of American toads (Bufo americanus) that were more abundant in managed stands, the overall diversity and abundance of amphibians did not differ significantly between managed and unmanaged areas. Therefore, I concluded that selection logging does not alter hardwood forest habitat to the degree that it negatively affects amphibian diversity or abundance. Implications of this conclusion are discussed

INFO Effects of temperature on survival and growth of westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout implications for conservation and restoration /
Westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi have declined throughout their native range in the Northern Rockies and were considered for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act. Water temperature is widely regarded as playing a key role in determining their persistence, but specific lethal levels and thermal optima for this cutthroat trout subspecies had not been precisely defined. This laboratory study used the acclimated chronic exposure method to determine tolerances and thermal optima of westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, a potential nonnative competitor now occupying much of the former range of westslope cutthroat trout. Rainbow trout had a distinct survival advantage over westslope cutthroat trout at warmer temperatures. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature (temperature at which 50% of the population survives for 60-d) of rainbow trout (24.30C; 95% CI, 24.0-24.70C) was 4.70C higher than that of westslope cutthroat trout (19.60C; 95% CI, 19.1-19.90C). In contrast, the optimum growth temperature for westslope cutthroat trout (13.60C; 95% CI, 10.3-17.00C) over the 60-d test period was very similar to that of rainbow trout (13.10C; 95% CI, 6.8-18.20C), although rainbow trout grew better over a wider range and at higher temperatures than did westslope cutthroat trout. The upper lethal and optimum growth temperatures for westslope cutthroat trout are in the lower range among most salmonids. The higher upper temperature tolerance of rainbow trout and its greater ability for growth at warmer temperatures may account for its increased occurrence at lower elevations than cutthroat trout. Water quality standards setting maximum daily temperatures from 13-150C, near the optimum growth temperature, would ensure suitable thermal habitat to maintain the persistence of westslope cutthroat trout populations. In addition, survival and growth parameters indicated in this study can be used with stream temperature modeling to predict suitable habitat for westslope cutthroat trout, as they may be particularly susceptible to increases in stream temperature associated with climate change. Such predictions of habitat suitability will be vital in prioritizing conservation efforts with respect to reintroduction and translocation of westslope cutthroat trout

INFO Environmental predictors of stoat (Mustela erminea) and ship rat (Rattus rattus) capture success /
The association between capture success of stoats (Mustela erminea) and ship rats (Rattus rattus) and landscape-scale environmental predictors was explored using trapping data from three stoat control areas located in podocarp/broadleaved forest in New Zealand. Stoat capture success was higher at trap sites where a rat was also captured at the same trap or a stoat was captured at a neighbouring trap. Drier trap sites with good soil drainage and increased proximity to the operational trapping boundary were also associated with increased stoat capture. Rat capture success was higher at trap sites where a rat had been captured at a neighbouring trap, and at trap sites that were on steeper ground, more easterly facing and within forest habitat. Trap sites with generally poor soil conditions, i.e. sites with lower soil calcium levels and wetter sites with poor drainage, and increasing distance from the forest edge were also associated with increased rat capture. There were highly variable relationships between rat and stoat capture and landscape-scale environmental predictors between the three stoat control areas. This could be due to differing topography, but also to the highly correlated nature of many of the topographic, climate and habitat predictors. Further research specifically designed to separate these effects should focus on the variables identified as common between all stoat control areas in this study. Additional investigations of whether rats captured in double trap sets act as additional bait for stoats would have practical benefits for stoat control areas. The variability of the results emphasises the importance of ensuring that traps are abundant and widespread in stoat control operations

Early eradication of weeds is preferable to attempting to control them when they are well-established, and becoming a problem. But when a plant is newly naturalised, we often do not know if it will eventually become a weed. In this study, we compare the cost effectiveness of removing all newly naturalised plants early or delaying action until they prove to be weeds. We obtained data from 58 Department of Conservation weed control projects around New Zealand and used these data to compare the typical cost for controlling a weed infestation at two stages of invasion: early stage small infestation, and late stage large infestation. We also modelled weed spread using different scenarios of plant growth rate and dispersal plus typical time estimates for weed infestations to spread. We then analysed the control costs at 5, 10, 20 and 40 years from establishment, to predict the cost implications of delaying weed control. Our data suggest that, early on, while an infestation is small (only a few plants or plants covering an area up to 400 m2), all individuals can be easily removed for a minimal cost--an average of $1090. By contrast, if control is postponed until a later stage (when the infestation is widespread or dense) it is, on average, 40 times more expensive than early removal. Furthermore, it is shown that if a plant's weed potential is unknown, its early removal will still be beneficial if removal can be achieved for less than $7000. Once a weed disperses from its initial establishment point, the costs of control increase dramatically, largely because of the burgeoning cost of searching for individual plants

The Animal Welfare Act 1999 enables traps that are considered unacceptably inhumane to be prohibited. This provision has resulted in an increased awareness of how well kill traps actually kill the intended target species. Trials of the killing effectiveness of stoat traps (both Fenn traps and Victor snapback traps) have shown that they do not kill stoats quickly or consistently. Because Fenn traps are used extensively by the Department of Conservation for trapping stoats in New Zealand it is desirable to find a humane alternative. Pen trials were conducted to determine the effectiveness of the Waddington backcracker trap for killing stoats. To pass the test for killing performance, the trap had to render 10 out of 10 stoats irreversibly unconscious within 3 min. Seven of eight stoats tested were rendered irreversibly unconscious within 3 min. However, the eighth stoat remained conscious beyond 3 min, resulting in the trap failing the test

INFO Evaluations of compliance with the FAO (UN) Code of conduct for responsible fisheries /
"This report presents evaluations of the compliance of 53 countries (strictly, marine fisheries jurisdictions) representing over 96% of the reported world fish catch, with Article 7, covering Fisheries Management, of the FAO (UN) Code of conduct for responsible fisheries, originally agreed by members of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published in 1995. Evaluations are based on an adaptation of a previously-published rapid appraisal scheme of 44 questions, each scored on a scale of zero to ten according to pre-set guidelines. Scores less than 4/10 signify 'fail' grades, while scores of 7/10 and over are regarded as showing good compliance. Scores have been based on cited published and unpublished literature and on the views of experts: some 2475 references have been consulted in the course of the work, which has taken three years. Each country evaluation is authored by members from the scoring team and in some cases includes external experts. Each evaluation has been subjected to a rigorous scoring protocol involving a series of cross-checks by the scoring team. In addition, many of the evaluations have been validated by external experts familiar with the country concerned (33/53 in January 2007). The 44 questions in the evaluations are divided in two parts, the first representing the intentions of a country to follow the Code, the second part assessing the actual performance achieved. Six evaluation fields, deriving from the themes of the 52 clauses in the Code text, cover management objectives (9 questions), regulatory framework (7 questions); precautionary approach (9 questions); the regulation of stocks, fleets and fishing gears (7 questions); social and economic factors (6 questions); and monitoring, control and surveillance (MSC) (6 questions). Overall results in each of these six fields for each country are expressed as a kite diagram. Each score has been given an uncertainty range that may be employed in any analysis of the results. A graphical score profile, including uncertainty, is presented for each country. The authors are aware that omissions and errors of interpretation may still remain for some countries. An open protocol has therefore been adopted for all country compliance evaluations, and the team remains open at any time to comments, corrections, adjustments or opinions that may be used to improve the accuracy of the evaluations. The 53 country reports comprise over 1170 pages and are published as links to web-based files (available at ftp://ftp.fisheries.ubc.ca/CodeConduct/ or at http://public.box.net/CodeofConduct, and also linked from country pages at www.seaaroundus.org). In this way, the country evaluations are 'living documents' that may change with time when modified or new material comes to light. A comparative analysis of the results from these Code compliance reports will be published elsewhere"--Executive summary

INFO Evolution and function of the jaw musculature and adductor chamber of archosaurs (crocodilians, dinosaurs, and birds)
Crocodilians, dinosaurs, and birds are part of successful group of reptiles known as archosaurs, little is known about the evolution of the adductor chamber, which includes the jaw musculature, trigeminal nerves, and particular blood vessels, hindering hypotheses of homology and feeding function in fossil taxa such as crocodyliforms and non-avian dinosaurs. First, I review the cephalic musculature of dinosaurs and identify problems and prospects involved in inferring feeding form and function in the clade. Second, using a flamingo as a case study, I introduce a new CT imaging/dissection methodology that enables 3D visualization of cephalic vasculature and differentiation of adductor chamber contents. Third, I develop a robust hypothesis of jaw muscle homology by analyzing the topological patterns of soft tissues in the adductor chambers of extant reptiles. Fourth, I identify major evolutionary changes in the orbitotemporal region (e.g., trigeminal nerve, braincase, palate) during the evolution of crocodilians. Fifth, I identify major evolutionary changes in the orbitotemporal region of dinosaurs with respect to the evolution of birds. Sixth, I discuss the evolution of cranial kinesis and its functional significance in dinosaurs and other reptiles. The general results were: 1) Flamingos have a novel vascular device associated with the hyolingual system. 2) Crocodylians have a novel soft-tissue topological pattern that violates the trigeminal topological paradigm. 3) Sensory branches of the trigeminal nerves are topologically conservative and represent evolutionarily stable dermatomes. 4) Despite the suturing of the palate to the braincase early in their evolution, the epipterygoid was a persistent structure in the skull of crocodyliforms, evolved several different morphotypes, and was not eliminated until recently along the lines to modern crocodylians. 5) The trigeminal nerve, protractor muscles, and epipterygoid exhibit mosaic evolution among dinosaurs and prove to be phylogenetically and functionally informative structures. 6) Dinosaurs do not exhibit the suite of morphological characters indicative of cranial kinesis which suggests that intracranial synovial joints may more likely be related to growth rather than feeding function. Hence, jaw musculature and its neighboring tissues in the adductor chamber are key cephalic structures that exhibit characteristic morphological, functional, and phylogenetic patterns among extant and fossil archosaurs

INFO evolution of semiochemicals in Australian marsupials
The aim of this project was to study the nature and relative proportion of the volatile components in the sternal-gland secretions obtained from a wide range of Australian marsupials. The results obtained were then used to investigate the evolution of semiochemicals in Australian marsupials by using the current phylogenetic tree as a template. The initial part of the study was dedicated to the investigation of some of the techniques available for the sampling and analysis of gland secretions. Individuals from 8 families within the Marsupialia and 1 family from the Monotremata were sampled over an 18 month period. The obtained results were then subjected to multivariate statistical analysis followed by cladistic analysis. In several species the secretion composition was found to be affected by the breeding status of individuals for both genders. Many other factors such as animal-age, hierarchical status, diet, and lifestyle were also observed to affect the secretion composition. Finally, cladistic analysis demonstrated the differences in the levels of divergence at the species, familial, and ordinal levels and highlighted secretion components that could be used to differentiate between superfamilies, species, and even sexual status of individuals

INFO examination of gender differences in today's mathematics classrooms exploring single-gender mathematics classrooms /
Much research identifies a gender gap in mathematics, and some research points to single-gender math classrooms as a solution to the math gender divide. The author conducted a seven week study in which she divided fifty fifth grade students into single-gender mathematics classes. She wanted to examine if single-gender math classes affected the math achievement and attitudes of her female students. Upon completion of the study the author found there was no statistical significance in the girls' achievement between a single-gender classroom and a coeducational classroom. There was a significant difference in the girls' perceptions as to how they best learn math

INFO Experimental response and analysis of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge
A technique was developed for the analysis of the mooring cables retrofitted with the elastomers and a parametric study was performed to investigate the possibility of further improving the performance of the floating bridge. The cable analysis showed that the retrofitted cables are more flexible than the former cables, up to pontoon displacements approximately equal to 12 in. to the north. Beyond this displacement, the analysis showed that the retrofitted cables are stiffer and higher tension loads are expected for the larger magnitude storm loading. The parametric study showed that a true uniform distribution of wind and wave loading to the mooring cables may not be possible. However, some further improvements to the performance of the bridge may be obtained by adjusting cable pretension values at various mooring cable pairs

INFO Exposed pedagogy investigating LGBTQ issues in collaboration with preservice teachers /
This report offers a description of our year of inquiry. Community development was essential to our collaborative work. In community, we were able to seek out experiences that assisted us in moving beyond the university in order to reflect on our own unexplored biases related LGBTQ issues. Following an emergent curriculum, striving for greater teacher/student parity, and collectively scaffolding experiences for one another were the kinds of practices that allowed us to expose these biases and take small steps toward activism. These practices resulted in what we came to call an exposed pedagogy. This research, then, offers pedagogical implications for engaging pre-service teachers with LGBTQ issues. It describes, in essence, how a group of unlikely collaborators came to implement an exposed pedagogy to explore lives beyond their own
