INFO Factors affecting 1080 pellet bait acceptance by house mice (Mus musculus) /
Avoidance of 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) could be one of the main reasons why multi-species control operations sometimes do not produce high reductions in wild house mouse (Mus musculus) populations in New Zealand. This study investigated how the concentration of 1080 in pellet bait affects acceptance by mice; whether pre-feeding with non-toxic bait mitigates mouse avoidance of bait containing 1080; and whether a non-toxic bait containing a masking agent is acceptable to mice. Wild-caught mice demonstrated very low acceptance of, and subsequent low mortality (25%) from, baits containing 0.08% 1080 in a two-choice laboratory test. In a second test, mice ate comparatively more pellets containing 0.001% 1080, but there was no resulting mortality and the non-toxic alternative pellets were still significantly favoured. Pre-feeding for 3 days with non-toxic pellets did not improve the low acceptance of 0.15% 1080 pellet baits by mice. In two of the three two-choice tests, the intake of all food by mice was significantly reduced for 2 days following the introduction of 1080-treated food. This "drop feed" effect was followed by an increase, mostly of non-toxic food, in daily intake over the next 3 days, to return to eating similar amounts to those measured before the introduction of 1080 (and to daily food intakes of control mice). Non-toxic bait was strongly preferred over two different types of non-toxic bait containing a masking agent. We suggest that avoidance of 1080 by mice is mediated by conditioned taste aversion. However, masking the taste of 1080 may not be effective if mice are micro-sampling and learning to associate sublethal poisoning effects with any distinctive taste. Improvement of bait efficacy may involve developing baits that delay the onset of symptoms of 1080 poisoning; or pre-feeding with baits containing a non-toxic substance with similar taste and/or odour to 1080
INFO Factors affecting cetacean bycatch in a New Zealand trawl fishery /
Incidental catch of cetaceans in commercial fisheries is a global phenomenon, occurring across a range of fishery types and affecting numerous species. In some cases such interactions have led to population declines, and may threaten viability of cetacean populations or species. In New Zealand, common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) bycatch often occurs during trawling for the commercial fish species jack mackerel (Trachurus novaezelandiae). Data gathered by New Zealand fisheries observers between the 2001/2002 and 2004/2005 fishing years (i.e. 01 October 2001 to 30 September 2005) were collated and examined to identify risk factors contributing to common dolphin bycatch in the jack mackerel trawl fishery. Exploratory analyses suggested that geographical area (represented by Fisheries Management Areas) had the most influence on dolphin bycatch. All observed bycatch events occurred in three out of eight Fisheries Management Areas. Using classification tree analysis, fishing depth emerged as an important predictor variable for dolphin bycatch during trawl tows for jack mackerel. Other potentially important predictors were total winch time and light conditions. Because of a large amount of missing data, extreme caution must be taken in generalising these results, but recommendations are made for future observer programmes and data management

INFO Factors causing dune ephemeral wetlands to be vulnerable to weed invasion /
Ephemeral wetlands are characterised by seasonal fluctuations in water level, with alternating wet and dry periods. The resulting indigenous vegetation is low in stature, making these wetlands vulnerable to alien weed invasion, and many ephemeral wetland plants are now uncommon or endangered. This study investigated soil nutrients and hydrology as potential influences on the susceptibility of dune ephemeral wetlands to weed invasion. Study sites were selected in dune systems on the Pouto Peninsula, Northland, and at Hawkens Lagoon and Whitiau near Wanganui, North Island, New Zealand. At these sites, soils and vegetation were sampled and water tables measured to establish water level fluctuation patterns. Transects were established and vegetation type and percentage weed cover on them were measured on three occasions from 2002 to 2005. Soil nutrient levels did not appear to influence the distribution of alien weed species. The cover of alien species did not increase at Pouto sites over the three monitoring years. However, the Wanganui sites progressively became weedier, and taller indigenous vegetation displaced low-stature turf communities. Weed invasion appears to be promoted by a combination of altered hydrology reducing both the water level and the extremes of wet-dry fluctuations, along with stabilised dunes that restrict the dynamic sand movement that creates and destroys these ephemeral wetland areas. Management options include maintaining natural dune processes which ensure that the conditions for creating new ephemeral wetland areas continue, surveillance for and removal of invasive weed species and, at sites where dunes have been stabilised, removal of taller alien and indigenous vegetation by mechanical methods, grazing or selective herbicides

My initial focus as a final project in the Creative Pulse was to begin to sing again. Singing fulfilled the three requirements of choice in a project: risk, rigor, and the requirement of "having to do it." I had sung as a young man, and stopped as the result of listening to an adult tell me that I could not sing. During the following 23 years, I used percussion and became a dancer in order to express myself. The art forms of percussion and dance I was drawn to like a man is drawn to a woman that he must have. What about being drawn to an art form in order to continue existing? An artistic pursuit whose means of expression are a salvation? One can read about many artists who came into an art form out of necessity. Their life outside of expressing themselves was bleak and the art form became their cry. I by no means wish to place myself at the level of expertise of such artists that came to their art to survive, or to imply that I "paid my dues" to the extent that certain artists have (artists such as Hank Williams, or the blues artist Robert Johnson, for example). I do mean to express through this paper my experience of the catharsis in singing country music and the blues. My beginning singing came at a time when I really needed it; the music helped me through a difficult time. The title of the paper is Fall and Redemption: the Essence of Country Music for this reason. It is in narrative form, foot printing my process and discovery of the music. I attempted to combine life's experiences with the discovery of the music. The experiences were the inspiration behind playing the music. The essence of country music and the blues is its sincerity, and I hope that I have combined my life's narrative with the artistic process effectively, as the time period (December 2005 to June 2007) was a time in which art was defined by life, and life was defined by art

INFO FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) a simplified LCSH-based vocabulary /
The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) schema is by far the most commonly used and widely accepted subject vocabulary for general application. It is the de facto universal controlled vocabulary and has been a model for developing new subjectheading systems around the world. However, LCSH's complex syntax and rules for constructing headings restrict its application by requiring highly skilled personnel and limit the effectiveness of automated authority control. Recent trends, driven to a large extent by the rapid growth of the Web, are forcing changes in bibliographic control systems to make them easier to use, understand, and apply, and subject headings are no exception. The purpose of adapting the LCSH in a faceted schema with a simplified syntax is to retain the very rich vocabulary of LCSH while making it easier to understand, control, apply, and use. The FAST schema maintains upward compatibility with LCSH, and any valid set of LC subject headings can be converted to FAST headings. FAST consists of eight distinct facets. Authority records have been created for all established headings except for the chronological facet. The initial version of the FAST authority file will contain approximately two million authority records

INFO feeding biology and potential impact of introduced giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa
Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) are extralimital (non-native) to the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa yet they have and continue to be introduced to the region. Financial gain has arguably been the driving force behind these introductions as foreign tourists associate giraffe with Africa and the African wildlife experience. This raises a number of ethical, ecological, and philosophical questions, especially when it is considered that the impact of these browsers on the indigenous vegetation has remained largely unquantified. In this study I assessed the diet and potential impact of three populations of giraffe in the Eastern Cape Province between January 2002 and October 2003. The diet was assessed by both direct observations and faecal analysis. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the results of the two methods of analysis, although direct observations appeared to be a superior method for assessing the diet of giraffe. The diet of giraffe in the Eastern Cape Province was similar to that within their native range with a deciduous species from the genus Acacia (Acacia karroo) being the most important component of the diet. However, giraffe in the Eastern Cape Province consumed more evergreen plant species than those within their native range. The relative lack of deciduous species in the Eastern Cape Province provides a likely explanation for such a result. Seasonal variation in the consumption of the most important species in the diet was evident and this was attributed to the deciduous nature of A. karroo and the seasonal growth of new shoots which were more palatable. The vegetation of the areas most commonly utilised by giraffe at each site was sampled using the point-centred-quarter method and the results related to the frequency of each species in the diet to calculate preference indices. Giraffe preference was strongest for A. karroo and this was attributed to the highly favourable chemical composition of the species. The browse utilisation of giraffe at each site was determined using the twig-length method and intake rates for the three most important species in the diet calculated using a pre-existing regression equation. Male giraffe fed at a higher rate than females. This was probably due to males adopting a "time-minimising" strategy to their feeding in order to allow more time for reproductive pursuits. Giraffe browse utilisation was highest where giraffe density was highest. However, several species were more heavily browsed than others even when giraffe density was low, suggesting that giraffe are capable of negatively affecting the indigenous flora of the province. I conclude that giraffe numbers should be reduced relative to property size in the Eastern Cape Province and that research into the impact of not only giraffe but the combined effects of giraffe and other extralimital herbivores on the indigenous flora and fauna be continued

In the evaluation of the impact of the Primary Health Care programme, there are concerns about internal validity resulting from the absence of randomisation and an uncontrolled design. The components of this issue are discussed and some support for internal validity is found in the reported subjective beliefs of participants about the cause of their health improvement and the outcomes of critical reflection by the programme team. The implications of the findings for policy, practice and further research are explored. It is argued that the health inequity experienced by people of sexual diversity will require profound social change for complete resolution. In the meantime, however, focused Primary Health Care with a community of sexual diversity has the potential to mitigate the health inequity its members experience and to help them to survive and function while they wait for a fairer and kinder society

INFO field investigation of physical workloads imposed on harvesters in South African forestry
The results revealed awkward working postures with a predominance of trunk flexion during all the harvesting tasks; these postures, adopted for long periods during work, are very likely to lead to the development of musculoskeletal injuries. The mean working heart rates were 123.3 bt.min-1 and 117.6 bt.min-1 during chainsaw operations and stacking respectively. During the step test, the mean heart rate and oxygen uptake responses were 127.9 bt.min-1 and 22.9 mlO2.kg-1.min-1 (chainsaw operators) and 116.9 bt.min-1 and 24.0 mlO2.kg-1.min-1 (stackers), revealing no significant difference between the "working" heart rates and the heart rates recorded during the step test. Physiological responses were analyzed over the full work shift which was divided into four quarters. Heart rate and oxygen uptake were significantly higher during the last half of the chainsaw operators' work shift compared to the first half. Heart rate increased from 120.7 bt.min-1 during the first quarter to 127.4 bt.min-1 during the last quarter of chainsaw operations. Likewise, oxygen uptake increased from 19.9 mlO2.kg-1.min-1 to 22.9 mlO2.kg-1.min-1 from the first to the last quarter of work. During stacking the heart rate (mean of 117.6 bt.min-1) and oxygen uptake (mean of 24.6 ml.kg-1.min-1) responses remained stable over the duration of the working shift. Workers lost, on average, 2.8% body mass during work while felling and cross-cutting and 3.6% during stacking. This reduced significantly to a loss of 0.4% body mass when re-tested following the introduction of water and food during the work period. Likewise, the energy deficit was significantly improved due to the introduction of a nutritional supplement. Pre-intervention the deficit was 8861.8 kJ (chainsaw operators) and 8804.2 kJ (stackers) while in the post-intervention phase this deficit was reduced by approximately 50% for both groups of workers

Six of nine nonnative boreal conifers in three genera (Abies, Larix, and Pinus) regenerated in 11 to 31 years after they were introduced to mainland Alaska. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engel.) and the Siberian larches (Larix sibirica Ledeb. and L. sukaczewii N. Dyl.) were the most widely introduced species and will likely be the first nonnative conifers to naturalize. Siberian larch grew up to six times more stem volume than white spruce in the first 40 years on upland sites, but was susceptible to the larch sawfly and a blue stain pathogen carried by bark beetles. On productive sites, lodgepole pine appeared to grow more stem wood than white spruce for about 35 years after planting. Snowshoe hares and moose were the most serious pests of the nonnative conifers. Balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) was the only species to regenerate in an established moss understory. Growth and age relationships were negative for all adequately sampled nonnative conifers and positive for native white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). Data were insufficient to assess niche availability for commercial use of productive nonnative conifers in mixed stands in Alaska. Survey results indicate that introduction and naturalization of noninvasive tree species may improve the diversity, stability, and productivity of managed forest ecosystems

However, oversights in GAO's methodology led to both under- and overestimations of the financial cost of implementing "don't ask, don't tell." By correcting these oversights, and after careful analysis of available data, this Commission finds that the total cost of implementing "don't ask, don't tell" between fiscal year 1994 and fiscal year 2003 was at least $363.8 million, which is $173.3 million, or 91 percent, more than originally reported by GAO. Given that we were not able to include several cost categories in our estimate and that we used conservative assumptions to guide our research, our estimate of the cost of implementing "don't ask, don't tell" should be seen as a lower bound estimate

The deliberate use of fire has long been a contentious issue in the South Island high country of New Zealand, being seen by some as damaging to the environment and by others as an essential pastoral management tool. These issues were examined in tall-tussock (Chionochloa rigida) grasslands at two sites in Otago, which were burned either in spring, to simulate pastoral management practice, or late summer, to simulate accidental fires. Fire temperatures reached over 10000C, but were of short duration (4-8 minutes) and had little heating effect on the soil. Biomass, carbon, and nutrient losses were lowest when the grasslands were burned under damp conditions, and increased as soil and plant moisture levels declined. The best predictors of biomass loss were the moisture content of the top 5 cm of soil and the base of the tussocks. Spring burns under damp conditions killed c. 35% of the tussock tillers but did not cause the death of tussocks, whereas burns under drier conditions or later in the growing season killed over 75% of tussock tillers and resulted in the death of tussocks. Seedling densities and inflorescence production were also least affected when the grasslands were burned under damp spring conditions; when conditions were drier, both were dramatically reduced and showed little sign of returning to pre-burn levels 4-5 years after the fire. Early season burns under damp conditions posed little threat to the long-term survival of tall-tussock ecosystems, whereas fires later in the season, or when conditions were drier, resulted in substantially greater biomass, carbon and nutrient losses and caused a loss of tussock dominance, at least in the short to medium term. Therefore, minimising their extent should be a priority wherever tussock cover is to be retained

This research tested the ability of fish morphology to predict membership of fishes in habitat guilds, their swimming performance, and habitat preference. Further, it considered methods for choosing a surrogate species to identify habitat of target species. Morphological discriminant functions were developed using morphological traits of fishes from one river to identify membership in two habitat guild systems (mesohabitat and microhabitat). Functions were then used to test factors influencing classification success of holdout tests and validated using fishes of a second river. Morphology was only partly successful (50%) at predicting membership in habitat guilds. Morphology identified species by shape, i.e., classifying test species into guilds with members of their genus, but not habitat use, because morphology and habitat were not strongly linked through function. By improving guild definition, relationships between morphology and habitat (Froude number) were identified for all fish groups examined (darters, benthic minnows, pelagic minnows, and suckers). Relationships were not transferable among groups. Further, morphology of eight minnows was linked to swimming performance, a key task for using habitat, in lab measurements of critical swimming speeds. In turn, swimming performance was related to habitat (Froude number). Morphology will be most successful at predicting habitat use of fishes when (1) more, discrete guilds are used, (2) guilds are identified within families, (3) variation in lifestyles (benthic vs. pelagic) is considered, and (4) key tasks related to using habitat are strongly associated with morphology. Finally, Iexamined a phylogenetic approach to identifying useable habitat. Closely related surrogate species were not more accurate in identifying habitat of target species than surrogates chosen by other methods

INFO Forest land conversion, ecosystem services, and economic issues for policy : a review /
The continued conversion and development of forest land pose a serious threat to the ecosystem services derived from forested landscapes. We argue that developing an understanding of the full range of consequences from forest conversion requires understanding the effects of such conversion on both components of ecosystem services: products and processes. However, there are unavoidable challenges involved in quantifying the threats from forest conversion and their related costs to human well-being. First, most attempts to quantify the costs of forest conversion on ecosystem services will necessarily rely on specific ecological science that is often emerging, changing, or simply nonexistent. For example, the role that many species play in ecosystem processes is poorly understood. Second, given the interconnected nature of ecosystem products and processes, any attempt to quantify the effects of forest conversion must grapple with jointness in production. For example, the cost of losing a species from forest conversion must account for that species' role as both (1) a product that directly contributes to human well-being, and (2) as a component in an ecosystem process. Finally, the ecology and the human dimensions of ecosystems are highly specific to spatial-temporal circumstances. Consequently, the effects of forest conversion in one spatial-temporal context are likely to be quite different than effects elsewhere

Nitrogen (N) is a primary limiting nutrient in all ecosystems. Therefore, a thorough understanding of N cycling processes in forest ecosystems is required to minimize N losses to fire, harvesting, and other forms of land management. The influence of fire, fire exclusion, and forest restoration treatments on non-symbiotic N-fixation in the forest ecosystem has been poorly studied. Over the past 100 years, fire has been greatly excluded from low elevation, fire maintained forests as a result of active fire suppression as well as land management activities that create discontinuities in landscape fire patterns. Previous studies have shown this activity to inhibit recolonization of sites by symbiotic N-fixing plant species. The lack of these important N fixing species may make non-symbiotic, free-living N fixing bacteria a more important source for N recovery in these forest ecosystems following disturbance. Recent studies also suggest that free-living N-fixing bacteria colonizing decomposing woody roots have the capacity to fix large amounts of N. The purpose of these studies was to investigate the effect of fire, fire exclusion, and forest restoration on the N contribution of non-symbiotic N-fixing bacteria (colonizing soil, woody roots, and soil crusts) to the forest ecosystem and how their contribution compares to symbiotic N-fixers in western Montana. Studies were conducted in the laboratory and at numerous field sites throughout western Montana. In order to determine the N-fixation activity of organisms in these systems, we used the acetylene reduction technique. Neither time since fire, nor restoration treatment had any direct influence on free living N-fixation in soil or woody roots. Moisture and N availability were the potent drivers of free living N-fixation in western Montana. Nitrogen-fixation rates were low in decomposing woody roots in these ecosystems and woody roots do not contribute a significant amount of N to low elevation ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir forests in western Montana. Free-living N-fixing bacteria in soils were found to make a significant, yet modest N contribution to the forest ecosystem. Nitrogen demand by trees and shrubs are being maintained by residual soil organic N, symbiotic N fixation, and wet and dry N deposition in the Inland Northwest

Consequently, the most urgent measure for all the surveyed countries must be the significant improvement of the efficiency of control regimes, using the Ecosystem Approach, as defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity. The education, training and awareness rising of freshwater fishery stakeholders on biodiversity and sustainable use issues can address the generally rather poor compliance of stakeholders with the relevant conservation measures. Taking into account the trend of a gradual decrease in numbers of professional fishers and increase in numbers of sport and recreational fishers, the latter should be a priority target group for IUCN cooperation. Recreational fishers in effective organizations and with their awareness sufficiently raised could be the force able to change the practices currently leading to overexploitation of freshwater fish diversity in Central and Eastern Europe. There has been increasing demand from New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) staff and people working with DOC for guidance on how to evaluate Conservation with Communities projects (CCPs), to ensure they are working towards DOC's goal that "people are aware of, understand and make valued contributions to conservation." CCPs are activities or programmes that aim to encourage, support and build the capability of communities and individuals to contribute to conservation. This guide introduces a six-step methodology for designing a project or programme evaluation. It includes a series of templates that can be used for designing an evaluation. A fictional scenario is also provided to illustrate how to use the templates. The guide aids the incorporation of evaluation into project planning; the use of evaluation to "learn as we go" and to decide on future action; and community participation in evaluation. At the end of the guide there is a toolkit, which includes the templates, examples of data collection tools and indicators, and other supporting information. Training on these guidelines has been piloted in two conservancies. This guide has been designed to be used with existing departmental resources on CCPs. Effective evaluation of CCPs will enable DOC to ensure that current and future projects are carefully targeted to meet the needs of DOC and the community, and to make good use of the resources available

Through the interaction of their soils, hydrology, and biotic communities, riparian forests protect and improve water quality, provide habitat for plants and animals, support aquatic communities, and provide many benefits to humans. Virginia, along with other states in the Chesapeake Bay region, has recognized the importance of riparian forests by implementing a plan to restore forested buffers along streams, rivers, and lakes. This project reviews selected literature on riparian forest buffers, including water quality functions, benefits to fish and wildlife, and human benefits. The review also discusses riparian buffer restoration and some of the costs and barriers associated with riparian forest buffer establishment. Information on financial and technical assistance programs available to Virginia landowners is included
