"The Germany Under Reconstruction digital collection provides a varied selection of publications in both English and German from the period immediately following World War II. Many are publications of the U.S. occupying forces, including reports and descriptions of efforts to introduce U.S.-style democracy to Germany. Some of the other books and documents describe conditions in a country devastated by years of war, efforts at political, economic and cultural development, and the differing perspectives coming from the U.S. and British zones and the Russian zone of occupation"--Home page |

Global observations of Martian clouds with the Mars Orbiter Camera of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft thesis /
The systematic daily global coverage of MGS not only provides us with detailed and coherent pictures of Martian cloud evolution, but also increases the number of cloud-tracked wind vectors by three orders of magnitude. Except for the global dust storm in the second MGS mapping year (2001), Martian weather is highly repeatable. When the 2001 global dust storm initiated, Hellas storms increased in frequency, transporting dust out of the basin daily. When the 1999 planet-encircling dust storm initiated, "flushing" storms also increased in frequency, transporting dust to the southern subtropics daily. These observations suggest that timely dust supply by local or regional storms could have a global impact |

Grassland plant diversity in relation to historical and current land use /
About 150 years ago agriculture was drastically reformed and around 90% of the formerly vastly distributed semi-natural grasslands, i.e. unfertilised and uncultivated grasslands, have since then disappeared. Accordingly, grassland plant diversity has declined due to abandonment, changed management methods and habitat loss. Grasslands are species rich as a result of a long management history; the management providing niches for a variety of organisms. Current diversity patterns are thus a result of historical and current land use in combination. This thesis explores some of the connections between historical land use and grassland vascular plants. Two studies concerns the habitat level, i.e. local conditions for grassland plants, two studies the landscape level, i.e. habitat patches in relation to neighboring patches. In the first study, grassland plant diversity was found to be strongly correlated to 18th and 19th century land use, more so than to current land use. Furthermore, the particular sequence by which one land use changed into another from the 18th century until the mid 20th century was an important predictor of plant diversity. In the second study, detailed comparison of 18th century and current grassland management revealed that current grassland management lacks several ecological factors that the literature deems important for grassland plant reproduction. The third and the fourth study explore how plant species richness in specific grasslands is related to the surrounding landscape by studying how current, 19th and 20th century grassland connectivity and area are reflected in current species richness of grassland plants. They revealed that the response of grassland plant diversity to different fragmentation components can differ widely between two superficially similar landscapes, although historical components were important in both landscapes for explaining current diversity patterns. Moreover, the direction of livestock movement within the pre-industrial landscape appears to have been an important determinant regarding the functional connectivity between different grassland patches. Given the strong correlation between historical agricultural practices and current plant diversity patterns, this thesis discusses this diversity as a biocultural heritage. The historical aspects of grassland diversity ought to be taken into account in conservation and restoration measures |

Gravel burrowing ability in Galaxias cobitinis /
Galaxias cobitinis (lowland longjaw galaxias) is a recently described, critically threatened fish, which occurs predominantly in the gravel-bed Kauru River, North Otago, New Zealand. This river experiences frequent droughts, which are exacerbated by water abstraction, and is an important site for gravel abstraction. Loose cobbles with large interstitial spaces are important habitat for G. cobitinis. However, gravel abstraction has reduced overall particle size, and thus interstitial space, and has led to increased embeddedness and the area of river bed covered by sand. Furthermore, during low flow periods, the area of useable habitat can be reduced to isolated groundwater-connected pools. This study investigates the survival strategy of G. cobitinis in relation to these issues. We experimentally tested the ability of G. cobitinis to burrow through gravels of differing compositions collected from an area disturbed by gravel abstraction activities, and from an unmodified section of the river bed. G. cobitinis was able to burrow into both substratum types; however, burrowing capabilities were significantly greater in undisturbed substratum samples. The influence of stable or declining water levels was also tested; however, this did not influence burrowing propensity. Importantly, G. cobitinis had limited tolerance to periods without water. Collectively, our results indicate that drought survival may be dependent on the presence of large interstitial spaces, which provide a quickly accessible route through the gravels into subsurface or hyporheic flows. Habitat modification that leads to the loss of interstitial space and prolonged drought is likely to be detrimental to the persistence of G. cobitinis in the Kauru River |

greater Central Asia partnership' for Afghanistan and its neighbors
Afghanistan is approaching a turning point. Security is increasing, institutional renewal is progressing, the economy is growing, and an open political system is taking root at both local and national levels. It is no exaggeration to declare that Afghanistan is emerging as the first major victory in the international war on terrorism. But victory should mark not just an end -- in this case to civil chaos -- but also a beginning. To now, America has scarcely considered what further vistas victory may open, let alone how it should respond to them. This is the urgent need of the moment. This paper proposes that progress in Afghanistan has opened a stunning new prospect that was barely perceived, if at all, when Operation Enduring Freedom was launched. This prospect is to assist in the transformation of Afghanistan and the entire region of which it is the heart into a zone of secure sovereignties sharing viable market economies, secular and relatively open systems of governance, respecting citizens' rights, and maintaining positive relations with the U.S |

Guaranteeing development? : the impact of financial guarantees / - UW restricted
This volume tests the relevance and usefulness of guarantees to public and private actors in developing countries, especially for funding development projects. The presence of guarantees from multilateral or bilateral agencies can encourage financial flows either to increase, or to go where they otherwise might not. In this way, they can have a positive effect on sovereign ratings as well as their immediate direct effect on the local development environment. As a bonus, this study finds, development guarantees can help stimulate and stabilize local capital markets, thus providing future benefits for both public and private investors.--Publisher summary |

guide to the Thalassinidea (Crustacea:Malacostraca:Decapoda) of the South Atlantic Bight /
Ghost shrimp and mud shrimp in the decapod infraorder Thalassinidea are ecologically important members of many benthic intertidal and shallow subtidal infaunal communities, largely due to the sediment filtration and mixing that result from their burrowing and feeding behavior. These activities considerably modify their immediate environment and have made these cryptic animals extremely interesting to scientists in terms of their behavior, ecology, and classification. Over 20 years ago, seven species of thalassinideans were known from the South Atlantic Bight (Cape Hatteras, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). During this study, the examination of extensive collections from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center (SERTC), and regional institutions, resulted in the identification of 14 species of thalassinideans currently known to occur within this region. The family Axiidae is represented by three species: Axius armatus, Calaxius jenneri, and Paraxiopsis gracilimana; the Callianassidae by six: Biffarius biformis, B. cf. fragilis, Callichirus major, Cheramus marginatus, Gilvossius setimanus, and Necallianassa berylae; the Calocarididae by two: Calocaris templemani and Acanthaxius hirsutimanus; and the families Laomediidae, Thomassiniidae, and Upogebiidae are each represented by one: Naushonia crangonoides, Crosniera wennerae, and Upogebia affinis, respectively. An illustrated key is presented for species level identification and supplemental notes on the ecology, distribution, and taxonomy of the species are provided |
