Habitat relationships and life history of the Rota bridled white-eye (Zosterops rotensis)
The Rota bridled white-eye (Zosterops rotensis) (Aves, Passeriformes) has experienced a severe population decline and range restriction over the last four decades. Little is known about this species and factors involved in the decline and range restriction are unclear. This study examined the potential roles of habitat alteration, introduced black drongos (Dicrurus macrocercus), and introduced rats in the decline and gathered more information on the behavior and breeding biology of this species. New life history data were collected and Rota and Saipan bridled white-eyes were found to differ in nest site characteristics and some behaviors. The importance of habitat alteration was assessed by examining Rota bridled white-eye habitat relationships at the microhabitat, within-range, Sabana-wide, and island-wide levels. Rota bridled white-eyes show a preference for high elevation wet forest but what drives their distribution within their current range was unclear. However, the alteration of this forest type by supertyphoon Roy in 1988 was probably the major factor in the decline of Rota BWEs between 1982 and 1996. Black drongo and Rota bridled white-eye relationships were addressed using current and historical survey data. Black drongos were found to prey on Rota bridled white-eyes but they probably only played at most a partial role in the decline of the Rota bridled white-eye. Introduced rats densities were assessed in Rota bridled white-eye areas and on other areas of the island and no evidence for rat numbers limiting Rota bridled white-eyes to their current range was found |

Habitat use and the effects of disturbance on wintering birds using riparian habitats in Sonora, Mexico
To place my own bird survey data in a broader context, I appended a compilation of more than 48,500 records from between 1849 and 2006 on the birds of Sonora from published accounts, museum specimens, and my own field work. They include a total of 533 species, nine of which were added from the compilation and my own field work. I also discuss the status of other species for the State's inventory |

Handbook on observations of pride marches
The handbook looks at different aspects of observing Pride marches. It explains briefly the principles of human rights monitoring. It lists relevant human rights instruments which can be invoked when a Pride march is banned or violent. Then it gives some practical advice and tools on human rights monitoring through observation of Pride marches. Once the factual information is collected it is important to gather the information in a report and to send it to the relevant human rights organisation. Information is given on organisations that monitor the implementation of human rights standards and how to approach them. Finally it looks into the possibility of taking cases before courts at national and international level and the challenges attached to this approach. This handbook can be used in conjunction with the toolkit on how to organise pride marches in a difficult environment which is available on the ILGA-Europe website |

Harvard Project on the Soviet Social System online
"The Harvard Project on the Soviet Social System Online provides access to digitized materials selected from the Harvard Project on the Soviet Social System (HPSSS). The digital collection consists chiefly of summary transcripts of 705 interviews conducted with refugees from the USSR during the early years of the Cold War. A unique source for the study of Soviet society between 1917 and the mid-1940s, the HPSSS includes vast amounts of one-of-a-kind data on political, economic, social and cultural conditions. The HPSSS's value is compounded by the fact that it was compiled in English and organized according to a rigorous social science framework, making it accessible to a broad range of students and scholars."--HPSSSO title screen |

Heteronormativity in a nursing context attitudes toward homosexuality and experiences of lesbians and gay men /
The general aim of the project was to describe the situation of lesbians and gay men in a nursing environment by studying the attitudes of nursing staff and students, and the experiences of gay nursing staff in their work environment and of gay patients and partners in their encounters with nursing. The study for papers I and II had a descriptive, comparative design. Nurses, assistant nurses, and nursing students completed the Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Scale (ATHS), the Causes of Homosexuality Questionnaire (CHQ), and the Affect Adjective Checklist (AAC), along with the Nursing Behaviour Questionnaire (NBQ). In general, the participating nursing staff and students expressed positive attitudes, though some subjects reported very negative attitudes toward gay people. The participants also expressed a full spectrum of emotions from delight to anger. The studies for papers III and IV had a descriptive, explorative design. Here, the data collection was performed by semi-structured interviews. The informants were gay nursing staff, gay patients and partners of patients. The gay personnel reported fear and concern about heterosexuals' reactions when these informants "come out," and were constantly assesing the risk being open about their sexual orientation among their workmates. Nearly all patients and partners described several situations where heteronormative assumptions were communicated by the nursing staff. Almost all informants offered recommendations for nursing staff to facilitate communication. According to the presented findings, probably only a small minority in Swedish nursing have negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. However, the informants told of heteronormative language and behaviour in nursing contexts that were percieved as insensitive, insulting and humaliating. Nursing staff need to learn how to communicate in a more natural way and to be aware of the norms they communicate through the language and behaviour they use |

High mountain lake research natural areas in Idaho
High mountain lakes in Idaho total about 1800 and represent one of the most pristine type ecosystems in the country. Limnological characteristics are described for 27 lakes and 20 ponds in 32 established and proposed Research Natural Areas (RNA) representing seven subregions in the state. Field collections were made from the 1960s through 1999 by different researchers. Even though data about some of these lakes is not currently available, the databases can be updated as research continues. A classification is developed to include elevation, size, depth, production potential and lake origin. Additional information that describes the sites is pH, rock type and hydrology. Aquatic plants, zooplankton, immature aquatic insects and cold water vertebrates inhabiting the water bodies are described. The classification can be applied to gap analysis to identify missing or under-represented natural area types. Future research efforts can focus on covering the gaps and bringing more high mountain lakes into the RNA system |

Historic heritage thematic frameworks : their use as tools for management and interpretation /
A thematic framework is a device that helps conceptualise history and place sites, people and events in their historical contexts. It has been suggested that management and interpretation systems for historic heritage in the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) would be substantially improved by the adoption of an effective thematic framework. This paper investigates the use and effectiveness of thematic frameworks in the USA, Canada and Australia, and examines how they are used in selecting and managing a "representative" range of historic heritage sites in these countries. Previous attempts by heritage management bodies to adopt and use thematic frameworks in New Zealand are briefly outlined. Potential problems that may arise from the adoption of models developed in other countries are discussed, along with lessons learnt from previous local applications of thematic schemes. This study found limited evidence of how effective thematic frameworks have been in achieving their stated goals, but does recommend that DOC should adopt a thematic framework for historic heritage. However, DOC needs to be aware of the limitations of such a framework. Any framework adopted needs to be a flexible tool that is used in conjunction with other management and interpretation methods |

HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the Netherlands in 2004 an update, November 2005 /
The increasing trend of sexually transmitted infections (STI) has continued further in 2004, despite a slight levelling off in 2003. The rise was observed both in the number of consultations and STI among heterosexuals and men having sex with men (MSM). In 2004, the number of new HIV diagnoses in the national HIV registry only increased among MSM. Serious epidemics of STI have occurred simultaneously in this group recently. The increase of HIV and STI suggest an increase of sexual risk behaviour among MSM. Alertness and innovative prevention and intervention methods are required to prevent a further spread of STI and HIV. As of June 2005, a total of 10619 HIV cases were reported in the Netherlands; 938 diagnoses in 2004. MSM still account for the majority of the cases. The number of heterosexually acquired infections declined for the first time in 2004. In the STI sentinel surveillance network, the number of chlamydial cases increased by 19%, that of gonorrhoea by 12%. Also, diagnoses of syphilis and HIV continued to rise in 2004. In 2000-2004, the number of syphilis cases among MSM has more than tripled. 14% of all chlamydial cases, gonorrhoea and syphilis cases among MSM were seen in HIV positives. Furthermore, in 2004 the percentage of ciprofloxacin resistance in gonococci has further increased to 15%. Enhanced surveillance of LGV was started in a response to an outbreak of LGV among MSM. Since January 2004, 160 cases had been reported. LGV has now been reported by other European countries, the USA and Canada as well. In the Netherlands, the number of LGV cases seem to rise slowly |

Home range characteristics of sympatric moose and white-tailed deer in northern Minnesota
Moose (Alces alces) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population numbers in northern Minnesota have fluctuated recently, possibly due to habitat changes, interspecific competition, and meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis). Little is known currently about the relative distribution and home range characteristics of sympatric moose and white-tailed deer in this area. Surveys were conducted during the winters of 1989 and 1991 to determine the relative distributions of moose and whitetailed deer pellet groups in Voyageurs National Park (VNP). Moose and white-tailed deer home ranges were determined using an adaptive kernel technique and applied to aerial radio telemetry relocations from 1989 to 1991. I examined the habitat selections of moose and white-tailed deer through compositional analysis at the home-range and core-area scales. Pellet transect data revealed a low abundance of moose and a high abundance of white-tailed deer and provided evidence of some spatial separation between moose and deer ranges in VNP. This evidence was supported by little interspecific home range overlap between radio collared moose and white-tailed deer. Moose home ranges in VNP were larger than any previously reported in the contiguous United States, and white-tailed deer home ranges were larger than any previously reported for the region. There was no apparent difference in home range sizes between the sexes for moose and white-tailed deer, although small sample sizes precluded precise statistical testing. Compositional analysis did not detect any habitat preference at the core-area scale for either moose or white-tailed deer. Both moose and white-tailed deer exhibited a significant preference for spruce/balsam fir habitats at the home-range scale. Canopy density and height preferences differed between moose and white-tailed deer at the homerange scale. Differential habitat preferences between moose and white-tailed deer in VNP might be related to the differences between these species' abilities to cope with northern mid-continent climates. The apparent spatial separation and different habitat preferences between moose and white-tailed deer might provide a refuge for moose from meningeal worm-infected white-tailed deer in VNP and could be a factor in the coexistence of the species |

Homo sweet homo, a play of spaces
The thesis looks at and plays with notions of space: literal three dimensional places such as the body, the home, and the city, as well as the more ephemeral and liquid territories that relate to the spaces within memory, language, and time. Allegorically, the space of one text is mapped onto and into another: the corporeality of homosexual experience and desire is read through traditional notions of the home. In this context, architecture as space that supports and frames notions of identity--the site where the compulsory repetition of culturally ascribed codes and utterances take place--is shown to produce the stage upon which human subjectivity is enacted and performed. My focus in the thesis is on the inherent complexities within spatial discourse and on how I seek out, appropriate, and remake spaces as habitable--queer |

Homosexuals and the U.S. military current issues /
In 1993, new laws and regulations pertaining to homosexuals and U.S. military service came into effect reflecting a compromise in policy. This compromise, colloquially referred to as "don't ask, don't tell," holds that the presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion which are the essence of military capability. Service members are not to be asked about nor allowed to discuss their homosexuality. This compromise notwithstanding, the issue has remained politically contentious. In recent years, several members of Congress have expressed interest in amending "don't ask, don't tell." At least one bill that would repeal the law and replace it with a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation--H.R. 1283--has been introduced in the 111th Congress |

Homosexuals and U.S. military policy current issues /
"In 1993, new laws and regulations pertaining to homosexuals and U.S. military service came into effect reflecting a compromise in policy. Prior to the 1993 compromise, the number of individuals discharged for homosexuality was generally declining. Since that time, the number of discharges for homosexual conduct has generally increased. Constitutional challenges to the former and current military policies regarding homosexuals followed in the wake of the new 1993 laws and regulations. Based on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Bowers v. Hardwick that there is no fundamental right to engage in consensual homosexual sodomy, the courts have uniformly held that the military may discharge a service member for overt homosexual conduct. However, the legal picture was complicated by the Court's 2003 decision in Lawrence v. Texas which overruled Bowers by declaring unconstitutional a Texas law that prohibited sexual acts between same sex couples. In addition, unsettled legal questions remain as to whether a discharge based solely on a statement that a service member is homosexual transgresses constitutional limits. In recent years, many academic institutions have enacted rules that protect homosexuals from discrimination on campus. As a result, colleges, universities, and even high schools have sought to bar military recruiters from their campuses and/or to eliminate Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs on campus because of the DOD policy on homosexuals in the military. At the same time, legislation has been enacted that bars giving federal funds to campuses that block access for military recruiters. On May 2, 2005, however, the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights (FAIR) to consider whether it is unconstitutional for the federal government to condition university funding on compliance with the Solomon Amendment. Efforts to allow individuals of the same sex to marry legally are unlikely to affect the DOD policy immediately, since such individuals are barred from serving in the military. Should such marriages become legal, this policy could be subject to court challenges." |

horse in Roman society
This dissertation presents an investigation of the place of the horse in Roman society, within the context of its roles as equus publicus, which derived ultimately from that of the cavalry mount, and race-horse. Consideration of the ceremonial role of the horse provides a clearer understanding of the value placed upon horses and horsemanship in the Roman world, thus permitting inferences to be drawn regarding the role played by the horse in the development of the equester ordo. Evidence is drawn from both literary and archaeological sources to shed light on the management and training of the horses of equestrian Rome. Chariot racing is also re-examined from the perspective of its equine players, and evidence is drawn from various sources to provide a more complete picture of the Roman horse-racing industry as a social structure. The importance of the racehorse in Roman society is examined and the symbolism of the victorious horse as represented in Roman art is discussed |

horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) demographic study
We tagged 7,500 bled, adult horseshoe crabs to gain information on horseshoe crab population dynamics. From resight reports (N=121), we examined movement patterns and found average distance traveled was 29.8 miles and maximum distance traveled was 195 miles, suggesting mixing along the Atlantic coast. We found a 1.6% recovery rate of tagged crabs and tags found detached from crabs. 11.6% of our resights consisted of tags found detached from crabs. We use information gained in our study to suggest improvements for future tagging efforts that could lead to further knowledge of horseshoe crab population dynamics |

How could this happen? a constructivist analysis of reactive state terrorism at Ruby Ridge /
Since this is a constructivist analysis of events surrounding Ruby Ridge, I specifically focus on how reality is constructed through the process of reification. In this research endeavor, I utilize an elaboration of Aho's (1994) steps of reality construction (naming, legitimation, mythmaking, sedimentation, and ritualism) in the understanding of how the situation of Ruby Ridge was constructed. I have integrated these five stages into the chronological events of Ruby Ridge and illustrate how the situation was constructed to be real and how the consequences of crisis management employed by federal law enforcement agencies evolved into reactive state terrorism. In other words, I answer the question, "How could this happen?" |

What better way to prove that collaborative research can be aided by the electronic tools now available than by using those tools to conduct an actual research project? Using an extension of the Delphi method of exercises known as "E-Del+I," RAND researchers and others involved in this project attempted to do just that. This briefing documents their efforts to develop the taxonomy of e-aided research and conduct an exercise to show the feasibility of this approach. The ensuing exercise demonstrated the cost, time, and efficiency benefits of the E-Del+I method |

Human-mediated pathways of spread for non-indigenous marine species in New Zealand /
Knowledge of human-mediated transport pathways for non-indigenous marine species (NIMS) to and around New Zealand is important for understanding and managing bioinvasion risks to high-value areas (HVAs). This document describes potential pathways for the spread of NIMS to areas of high conservation value, based on a preliminary list of such localities. This list includes HVAs that are geographically spread throughout New Zealand and vary in size from small discrete areas (e.g. small marine reserves) to expansive regions of coastline (e.g. Fiordland and Stewart Island/Rakiura). Similarly, HVAs range from remote offshore islands to localities close to centres of human activity (e.g. international ports), which may be vulnerable to the natural spread of pest organisms. Vessel traffic and aquaculture activites are highlighted as important pathways for the human-mediated spread of potential pest species. In relation to conservation areas, vessel traffic appears to be of particular significance, with three major mechanisms for the potential transfer of pest organisms: ballast water, hull fouling and sea chests (water-intake recesses in the hull). While ballast water is widely considered as the major present-day mechanism for the global dispersal of NIMS, hull fouling is likely to be particularly important for translocation within New Zealand and may be significant even at local scales. Vessel sea chests can harbour a range of NIMS, including adult life-stages, and are a potential mechanism for the spread of pest organisms directly from infested international source regions to high-value conservation areas around the New Zealand coast. There is a variety of other actual and potential pathways that may be important in the spread of marine pests to and around New Zealand. However, reliable and sufficiently detailed information for many pathways is difficult to obtain, even at a regional scale. This suggests that future effort needs to concentrate on identifying pathways that are of greatest importance in the transfer of NIMS, using a structured, risk-based approach |
