INFO National advertisers, The advocate, and queer sexual performance
This thesis examines how national advertisers work to frame gay subjectivity and queer sexual performance in The advocate, the nation's largest and most widely circulated gay and lesbian news magazine. Utilizing Judith Butler's conceptions of performativity and the abject, I direct my attention to two examples of advertising discourse from Miller Lite that appeared frequently in The advocate in 2002 and 2003. I argue that these advertisements evidence an ambivalence, representing queer sexuality while reifying gay male marginality and delimiting the number of ways in which queerness can be performed. I conclude by arguing for a more nuanced understanding of same-sex desire and the importance of body politics for queer, feminist, and ethnic/racial civil rights struggles while asking how gay men might be nominated as complete sexual and political citizens

INFO Natural regeneration of broadleaved tree species in southern Sweden : effects of silvicultural treatments and seed dispersal from surrounding stands /
The objective of the present thesis was to examine the effects of silvicultural treatments and seed dispersal from surrounding stands on the establishment of natural regeneration of broadleaved tree species in southern Sweden. Most of the broadleaved tree species that occur naturally in forests in southern Sweden were studied but birch (Betula pendula Ehrh./B. pubescens Roth) was the most common species and present in equal numbers in all studies. The wind dispersal of seeds of seven species was studied and great variations were found. This could mainly be explained by differences in seed morphology. The effect of soil scarification was examined in all five studies and was generally found to be positive for the establishment of the studied broadleaved species. However, in some cases the scarification was not positive for the establishment. The reason for this was hypothesised to be that the seed supply was limited, or an effect of large and/or animal-dispersed seeds. The effect of shelterwood was examined in three studies and was found to be positive for animal-dispersed species but negative for shade-intolerant species, although a sparse shelterwood can be used to regenerate birch. Slash removal was included in one study and found to be positive for the establishment of birch. This thesis showed that regeneration treatments can be used to increase the establishment of naturally regenerated broadleaved tree seedlings, but the stand structure and species composition must be regulated with pre-commercial thinning. However, the effect of variations in seed production and seed dispersal must be closely examined from a time and a space perspective prior to any forecasts regarding the effects of regeneration treatments

INFO Nest counts of Stewart Island shags/mapua (Leucocarbo chalconotus) in Otago /
The Stewart Island shag/mapua (Leucocarbo chalconotus) is an endemic New Zealand species that has been classified as "Nationally Vulnerable" under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. The breeding distribution of this species is split geographically into a northern population along coastal Otago and a southern population on islands in and bordering Foveaux Strait. This study collates and analyses data from the northern population to determine whether this population requires more focussed management to ensure its future sustainability. The species is dichromatic (exhibits two colour morphs) and the two populations can be differentiated visually by differences in ratios of the two morphs. Counts of nests in Otago began in the middle of the 20th century and indicated a rapid northward spread and increase in numbers, quantified as an average 12% annual increase over 15 years; this culminated in a peak of c. 1900 nests in 1987. The subsequent trend is less definitive, but indicates the likelihood of a sustained average decrease of 2% per year. However, the breeding range of this species has continued to spread both north and south, with initiation of nesting at Kinakina Island recorded in 1993, marking a 100-km southward jump that doubled the breeding distribution of the Otago population. We conclude that the Otago population is not at immediate risk and therefore does not require species-specific conservation management. However, since the current status of the Kinakina Island breeding population remains unknown, it is important that an inspection is carried out as soon as possible. We also recommend annual counts of nest numbers at each of the other four breeding locations (Maukiekie Island, Taiaroa Head, Wharekakahu and Green Island), to facilitate the rapid detection of changes in population trends

"As stated on the web site, the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations Union Catalog is dedicated to 'improving graduate education by developing accessible digital libraries of theses and dissertations.' Because this project is still evolving, there are different interfaces with different coverage. The largest, hosted by OCLC, currently contains records for over 98,000 electronic theses and dissertations from over 40 institutions worldwide. You can search by title, creator, contributor, or abstract and limit by topic, institution, year or language. Records provide abstracts of the work, along with a link to the full text when access is unrestricted. While there is scanty documentation and currently no online help, this project is evolving into a valuable metasearch tool for electronic theses and dissertations residing in disparate institutional repositories"--"Best Free Reference Web Sites 2004." INFO New England cod fishing industry and maritime dimensions of the American Revolution
In order to get at the linkages between the worlds of commerce and the way of war I triangulated data culled from merchant ledgers, ship's log books, customs records, shipping records, diaries, newspapers, and military service records. Drawing on these sources, the dissertation defends a two-fold argument. First, economic competition between vested interests in the British Empire, principally New England fish merchants, West Country fish merchants, and West Indian sugar planters, resulted in a series of commercial regulations and naval police actions aimed at restricting New England's economic expansion. These regulations and actions culminated in the British state's fateful decision in 1775 to close the New England cod fishing industry, which ultimately motivated colonists to go to war. Second, fishermen and fish merchants played key roles in winning the war. Merchants converted trade routes into military supply lines and transformed their fishing vessels into warships. Fishermen armed and manned the first American navy, served in the first coast guard units, manned privateers, and fought on land. These multi-faceted efforts helped secure American independence

INFO New Zealand fairy tern (Sterna nereis davisae) recovery plan, 2005-15 /
The New Zealand fairy tern (Sterna nereis davisae) is New Zealand's rarest indigenous breeding bird. It is a morphologically distinct, geographically and genetically isolated, endemic subspecies of an Australasian species, which consists of two other recognised subspecies: S. n. nereis in Australia and S. n. exsul in New Caledonia. The population is estimated to number 35 to 40 individuals and now only breeds at four breeding sites in the North Island. It is threatened by introduced mammalian predators, disturbance, and habitat modification. This plan presents a revised goal and the objectives required to continue recovery of the New Zealand fairy tern. Actions in this plan focus on the continued protection of the breeding pairs and their progeny in situ. Research is required on critical population demographics

Non-migratory galaxiid fishes (Galaxias spp.) occur throughout New Zealand, although individual species generally have very restricted distributions. Species have been declining in both the number of populations and abundance due to a variety of causes such as changes in land use, impact of introduced species, and water abstraction. Recovery actions are addressed for the following endemic non-migratory galaxias: flathead galaxias (Galaxias depressiceps), dusky galaxias (Galaxias pullus), Eldon's galaxias (Galaxias eldoni), roundhead galaxias (Galaxias anomalus), Gollum galaxias (Galaxias gollumoides), dwarf galaxias (Galaxias divergens), bignose galaxias (Galaxias macronasus), upland longjaw galaxias (Galaxias prognathus), lowland longjaw galaxias (Galaxias cobitinis), Galaxias sp. D (or Pool Burn galaxias), Teviot galaxias, southern flathead galaxias, northern galaxias, dwarf inanga (Galaxias gracilis), and dune lakes galaxias (Galaxias sp.). The actions in this plan focus on designating and protecting key populations for each galaxiid. Further actions include advocacy tasks to increase both iwi and general public awareness, participation in recovery work and research to determine critical biological aspects required for recovery

INFO No laughing matter an exploration of the role of the protagonist in Australian feature films classified as social comedies /
Australian film has engaged social issues since its earliest days, often within the genre of comedy. Writers and filmmakers have treated a wide range of issues with varying degrees of success in engaging their audience in a level of social discourse. This success has been independent of the specific issue addressed, the government funding policy, cultural policy, the national and international political climate, and available technologies. Rather it can be attributed to the filmmaker's approach to both characterization and narrative. Of the films chosen for examination it appeared that a positively portrayed protagonist in combination with a narrative that provided a clear but balanced opinion on the issue addressed was more successful in engaging its audience in a level of social discourse. The ability of the films to engage their respective audiences was based on criteria such as box office success, critical reception, and media and public discussion of the film around the time of its release as well as more recently. The findings of this investigation arose from the production of a feature length screenplay, The Last of the Wombats, which dealt with the issue of national security. The screenplay follows the Ruddocks along on their journey from personal insecurity, through issues of perceived threat, to the initial response of increasing the physical security measures around their house. These actions produce more problems than they solve, and this state of imbalance forces the main characters (Amber, Brian and Karen) to address their own insecurities and eventually to move beyond them

INFO Non-hegemonic masculinities and sexualities in the secondary school construction and regulation within a culture of heteronormativity /
This project looks at the ways in which masculine identities are constructed and perceived in secondary schools. It identifies some of the links between broader gender politics and the more specific area of masculinities as they apply to the lives of gay-identified and non-identified secondary school students. Through focused discussion with groups of students the research describes types of behaviors that are characterized by students as desirable or undesirable and the perceived relationship of such behaviors with particular sexualities. In this thesis I interrogate the treatment (including bullying, harassment, and lack of acknowledgment of the gay experience), in schools, of boys who express gender unorthodoxy/non-hegemonic masculinities. In order to understand this behavior I look at the means of control of such expressions as exercised by other students and teachers and explore the motivation behind this control. Through listening to the stories of students I identify the need to evaluate school policy and pedagogical practices with a view to making the educational experience more inclusive of a broad range of masculinities and sexualities and therefore a more relevant, positive, and productive one

Using the Halifax Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth Project as a case study, this thesis examines the structure of the Halifax queer youth movement and how it influences the manner in which the young men and women involved in the project get along with one another. Using a politics of difference as a conceptual framework, I argue that the Youth Project is an organization which is set up to explicitly address as diverse a group of individuals as possible, and that this serves as an excellent example of managing social group difference, both within queer organization, and within other organized groups. Furthermore, I discuss some conceptual challenges to a politics of difference, and in the end conclude that despite some problems, a politics of difference is the best way for the Halifax Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth Project to address social group difference

INFO Numbers of waders in New Zealand 1994-2003 /
Populations of waders, especially migratory species, tend to be in decline worldwide, and there has been concern for some time about the status of some endemic species in New Zealand. Counts of waders in estuaries throughout New Zealand were made during summer (November-December) and winter (June-July) from November 1994 to June 2003, and compared with results from the previous decade. Populations of most species that breed in New Zealand appeared to be stable or increasing, but banded dotterels (Charadrius bicinctus bicinctus) had clearly declined. No species of Arctic migrant appeared to have increased in number, and only eastern bar-tailed godwits (Limosa lapponica baueri) and pectoral sandpipers (Calidris melanotos) appeared to have arrived in similar numbers to the previous decade; numbers of the other species had declined, some substantially. There were disproportionate local gains and losses between sites in several species that suggest local habitat change. In winter, lesser knots (Calidris canutus) had become much more concentrated on Manukau Harbour and turnstones (Arenaria interpres) seemed to have moved away from Southland. Species that depend on a small number of sites nationally, especially wrybill (Anarhynchus frontalis) and lesser knot, are particularly vulnerable to changes at their wintering sites. Some declines in Arctic migrants clearly reflect problems elsewhere on their routes, but there is growing recognition internationally that impacts on non-breeding sites are critical. Consequently, recent changes to coastal environments in New Zealand are of concern
