Racial and sexual orientation identity and social support as predictors of sexual risk-taking behavior among African-American men who have sex with men
Results from the Young Men's Survey (Valleroy et al., 2000) suggest that two factors associated with HIV risk among MSMs: 1) being a member of an ethnic/racial minority and 2) history of anal sex with another man. Furthermore, the literature suggests that gay men who do not accept their sexual identity practice risky sexual behaviors more than gay men who are more accepting of their sexual identity (Meyer et al., 1995). Furthermore, researchers have suggested that MSMs who have positive ethnic or sexual orientation identities were less likely than other MSMs to engage in HIV risk-taking behaviors, such as unprotected sexual contact (Peterson & Marin, 1988; Seibt et al., 1993). Gay African-Americans who affirm their sexual orientation identity feel they are perceived by other African Americans as abandoning ties to the African-American community and assuming another minority group status (Stokes & Peterson, 1998). Trobst, Herbst, Masters, and Costa (2002) found that within a sample consisting primarily of African Americans, individuals tended to engage in high risk behaviors, such as casual sex, to cope with emotional distress, such as poor social support. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether reported racial/sexual orientation identity and social support predict sexual risk-taking behaviors among African American men who have sex with men. The participants were 637 African American men who reported at least one sexual experience with another man. This project was a secondary analysis of a sample that participated in a national questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to predict sexual risk from racial/sexual orientation and social support variables. In particular, social support variables were tested as possible mediator variables between racial/sexual orientation and sexual risk. Results from the study suggest that racial/sexual identification is not a significant predictor of sexual risk behavior and, as a result, social support is not a mediator between the two. In addition, there was not a relationship between social support and sexual risk behaviors. However, there was an association between racial/sexual identification and social support, which may be an area of further research |

Radio, community, and identity in South Africa a rhizomatic study of Bush Radio in Cape Town /
In particular, I argue that Bush Radio is not so much an organization as it is an organism, held together by a complex set of interlinked structures, with the concept of "community" pulsating as its central life-force. A kind of "body without organs" (Haraway, 1989), Bush Radio has no real essence--it is both the embodiment of community radio at its best--and its antithesis. Bush Radio is not a "bush" radio, geographically or figuratively. It sports state of the art digital equipment and a relatively sophisticated organizational structure, yet it is still deeply connected to the various communities it serves |

re-evaluation of potential rodenticides for aerial control of rodents /
Rodent control is carried out extensively in New Zealand to protect the native fauna and flora. This review outlines the advantages and disadvantages of different rodenticides as alternatives to sodium fluoroacetate (1080), and their suitability for aerial application. It includes existing rodenticides and those in the registration "pipeline," as well as those that are not currently available in New Zealand. In the short to medium term, the focus for aerial baits should be on those compounds already registered in New Zealand or other countries. Aerial brodifacoum baiting is appropriate in isolated situations, but is not suitable for repeated use on the mainland, as brodifacoum is highly persistent and will bioaccumulate. Diphacinone has been registered for field use in New Zealand and the US Environmental Protection Agency has recently registered it for aerial control of rodents for conservation purposes; therefore, this is a logical first choice for control in New Zealand. Cholecalciferol is the next best option, as there is no secondary poisoning and thus there would be lower risk to non-target bird species; this is currently registered for field use as a rodenticide in bait stations. The third option is cholecalciferol in combination with coumatetralyl, which should be more effective than cholecalciferol alone, and the fourth is zinc phosphide. In the longer term, the preferred alternative to 1080 would be a novel, humane red blood cell toxin, related to para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP). PAPP is an attractive new pesticide that is being developed for stoat (Mustela erminea) and feral cat (Felis catus) control; however, the rodenticidal potential of this class of compounds still remains to be determined. Availability and registration status could influence this priority list in the future. A strategy to manage mice (Mus musculus) and sustain rat (Rattus spp.) control needs to be flexible and integrate non-anticoagulant and anticoagulant use |

Recognizing a different other neo-Kleinian analysis of lesbian relationship violence /
Experience is both a starting point for analysis and a kind of measure against which discourse can be assessed. Although experience has a formative role in establishing discourse on lesbian relationship violence, experience is not without problems. Experience can not be taken solely as a source of truth or an arbiter of discourse, because it is not outside social, political, historical, and cultural forces. Accordingly, this study discovered that lesbian experiences of relationship violence are often understood in a decontextualized and simplified manner; they are either taken at face-value or translated into therapeutic language that is essentialist, heterosexist, or both. Also, these dominant frameworks for interpreting lesbian experiences of relationship violence tended to be adopted by therapist, researcher, victimized lesbian, and the lesbian who was violent. What these findings suggest is that lesbian experiences of relationship violence are often more complex and dynamic than their portrayals. It is concluded that together neo-Kleinian and postmodern feminist theory provide a framework in which lesbian experiences of relationship violence can be critically reflected upon, understood, and treated for their complexity |

Recovery history of greenback cutthroat trout population characteristics, hatchery involvement, and bibliography /
The greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias) is native to the mountain and foothill waters of the South Platte and Arkansas river basins in Colorado. This taxon declined rapidly beginning near the turn of the century and was listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. We assembled all available information from a variety of sources to document recovery efforts from 1957 to 1999. For each greenback cutthroat trout population, we noted (1) the characteristics of recovery waters and dates of population discovery or introduction; (2) fish abundance estimates; (3) analyses of genetic purity; (4) salmonid fauna, removal efforts, and reinvasions; and (5) dates, sources, and numbers of fish used to establish populations. For each hatchery used to assist recovery, we noted (1) sources and numbers of fish delivered to them; (2) sources, sex ratios, and production of fish used to create particular year classes; and (3) dates, numbers, and sizes of hatchery fish shipped to establish wild populations or supplement other hatchery stocks |

This document is a five-year multi-species plan for the recovery of seven threatened stream frogs of south-east Queensland. The southern dayfrog and southern gastric-brooding frog declined and disappeared in the late 1970s to early 1980s. They have not been located since then, despite considerable survey effort. All other species are reported to have undergone population declines, although these are sometimes poorly quantified. One of these species, the cascade treefrog, declined markedly in Queensland in the late 1970s-early 1980s. However, numbers have since shown some recovery |

Recruitment of Coprosma wallii at Paengaroa Mainland Island /
This study examined recruitment of the threatened shrub Coprosma wallii at Paengaroa Mainland Island, Mataroa, New Zealand. This is the first comprehensive survey of recruitment of C. wallii seedlings in the North Island. Superficially, Paengaroa appears to offer ideal conditions for C. wallii seedling recruitment. However, the population at Paengaroa appeared to have a scarcity of seedlings and young plants. The present study quantified seedling density and determined which factors might be hindering seedling recruitment. An intensive search was made for seedlings around 21 mature female C. wallii plants: 9 inside the main reserve and 12 on adjacent land that was exposed to weed control. Seedlings were present in four of these plots, with the numbers of seedlings per plot ranging from 1 to 50. The distribution of seedlings strongly suggests that germination and growth take place in areas of disturbance and high light levels, as there were very few seedlings in parts of the forest that were established, with low disturbance and dappled light. It is concluded that C. wallii requires a number of conditions for germination, including high light levels, ground disturbance, moisture and fertile soils. Recommendations are made for further monitoring of seedling recruitment including quantitative measurement of environmental drivers; adaptive management to improve recruitment through spray trials, planting of cultivated seedlings and pulsed grazing regimes; the inventory of a third population; and use of dendrochronlogy to establish population age structures |

Red state, blue state, red news, blue news
This research is organized by an investigation of the demand-side and supply-side of media polarization. The demand-side study looks at ideological news audiences through a series of path analysis models using the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press 2004 media consumption survey. On the "supply side," media polarization is demonstrated through a content analysis of 44 television news transcripts to quantify the amount of partisan news framing during the Senate confirmation hearings for Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. Through both of these quantitative studies, and complimented by a review of polarization literature, as well as interviews with political communication experts, the case is quite strong for the politically polarizing effects of the news media |

Regional security in the South Caucasus the role of NATO /
Unresolved security issues in the South Caucasus have a direct and negative impact on the security interests of NATO and the U.S. They impede access to Central Asia and Afghanistan, threaten the security of needed energy resources as well as access to friendly allies in the Wider Middle East, and create an environment of instability that Russia can both exploit and perpetuate. Unresolved security issues there exercise a decisive and adverse effect on democratic reform, market-based development, and overall prosperity across the South Caucasus. Continuing shortfalls in these areas threaten to turn the region into a haven for transnational organized crime and even terrorism. This paper argues that the national security interests of NATO and its members in the South Caucasus, especially concerning the war on terrorism, NATOs obligations in Central Asia and Afghanistan, and the role of the Alliance in the Wider Middle East, have grown to such a degree that its interests would be significantly affected negatively by instability and unrest in the South Caucasus. The individual and collective interests of NATO members therefore suggest that a larger role of the Alliance in strengthening the security of the South Caucasus is warranted |

Regional temperature and radiation indices and their adjustments to horizontal and inclined forest land /
Mean temperatures for the normal period (1961-90) from 513 stations in Sweden, together with their geographical positions, are used to derive temperature sums and average lengths of the growing season for different threshold values as functions of latitude and altitude. Maps are drawn showing the distribution of these temperature indices. Swedish regional average forest yield is well correlated with the temperature sums for the threshold value 50C (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.89). Solar radiation data for the period 1983-91 from 14 stations in Sweden are used to estimate global radiation reaching the earth's surface during clear days and during days irrespective of cloudiness. This data set is also used to derive global radiation sums expressed as functions of latitude and altitude. Corrections for an approximate adjustment of temperature indices to the soil surface level and with respect to local continentality/maritimity are proposed. The solar radiation on slopes has been calculated for various inclinations and azimuths |

Relating women lesbian experience of friendship /
Lesbians who are confident communicators, who have access to alternative feminist discourses which value relatedness, and who, together with their friends, are open to change, are able to negotiate satisfactory friendships and relationships. The study demonstrates lesbians' complex subjectivities as changing selves are negotiated through friendships, love relationships, and communities, particularly through experiences of loss |

relationship between political environment and size of a library's collection of GLBTQ fiction for young adults
This study examines the young adult fiction holdings of the main branch libraries of six capital cities in the United States. The study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between the political leanings of the area the libraries were situated in and the size of their young adult fiction collection with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (GLBTQ) characters. The holdings of each library were compared to a checklist of YA titles with GLBTQ characters published between 1994 and 2004. The expected outcome that libraries in liberal areas would contain higher GLBTQ collections was not supported by the data; indeed, the reverse was true. Libraries in conservative areas had the largest collections of GLBTQ literature for young adults, though the study does not attempt to establish a causal relationship between politics and collection |

Remote sensing of wetlands in Yellowstone National Park
As part of the Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative, satellite remote sensing was used to identify potential wetland amphibian habitat in Yellowstone National Park. Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery was combined with ancillary predictors of wetland occurrence including habitat type, cover type, landform type, bedrock geology, soil attributes, terrain measures, and climate data. Classification trees were used to predict the likelihood of palustrine wetland occurrence across the Yellowstone landscape. Wetland maps generated by this study are intended to address shortcomings of the National Wetland Inventory in Yellowstone; namely, errors-of-omission and the temporally invariant nature of the inventory. Relative importance of Thematic Mapper imagery, image texture information, terrain measures, and thematic spatial data were assessed by comparing the accuracy of classification trees trained with different subsets of predictors. In general, classification trees using all available predictors exhibited the greatest accuracy. Classification tree structure was similar in models generated with satellite imagery from different years. Also, similar accuracy rates were found across years. The results indicate that the method could be applied to annual wetland monitoring. Average producer's accuracy for the palustrine wetland class was approximately 0.92. Five palustrine wetland classes were discriminated with an average overall accuracy of approximately 0.83. A wetland map derived from a 1 August, 2003 Thematic Mapper image was field-verified in late-summer and early-autumn of 2003. The classification tree methodology appears to be sensitive to within-season wetland condition and yearly wetland variability. Satellite remote sensing located wetlands not mapped by the National Wetland Inventory and also identified upland sites erroneously classified as wetland. Methods developed by this study are general enough to be applied in other physiographic settings and should prove to be useful to amphibian conservation efforts over large geographic extents |

Reproduction, survival, and denning ecology of black bears in southwestern Virginia
We monitored 31 bears for 39 bear winters with 100% of the known bears denning. Bears denned in trees (41%), rock cavities (32%), excavations (14%), snags (8%), and ground nests (5%). Chestnut oak (Quercus prinus; n = 9), red oak (Q. rubra; n = 8), and tulip-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera; n = 1) were used as tree dens. Habitat characteristics did not differ between ground dens and tree dens; however, older bears used ground dens more frequently (Z = -2.484, P = 0.013) than tree dens. Fifty-seven percent of bears denned on public land, and we documented one instance of den reuse |

My results are comparable to other studies that found these management practices provide habitat for both gap associated birds and mature forest birds. Further research is needed to determine the impact of other factors that may mask treatment effects |

Restoration of degraded land a comparison of structural and functional measurements of recovery /
Vegetation structure in amended sites, as measured by total vegetation cover and species richness, recovered to levels similar to references within the two years of the study. Plant community composition did not develop similarity to references in any experimental treatments. Both soil amendment and seeding type affected cellulose decomposition rates, with amended plots showing higher decomposition rates than unamended, and seeded plots exhibiting higher rates than unseeded. Enzyme activities were largely determined by soil amendment, but the reference plots consistently had higher enzymatic activity. Amended sites exhibited significant increases over time in soil respiration, reaching or surpassing the rates observed in reference areas. Methane oxidation rates were generally increased in disturbed plots compared to undisturbed references due to increased atmospheric diffusion into the soil. Amended areas exhibited depressed rates relative to unamended, and seeding level had no significant effect on methane oxidation. Over all measurements, restoration of ecosystem function was most facilitated by the addition of the soil amendment. Seeding treatment significantly altered the resultant plant community, which may have substantial, long-term consequences for succession. The inclusion of functional parameters into restoration assessment provides for better overall information concerning ecosystem performance and may add to the ability to predict long-term success of restoration efforts |

Rethinking US drug policy
Most Americans believe that their country's forty-year 'war on drugs' has failed. Yet, instead of a serious national discussion of how to reform US drug control strategies, there remains a silent tolerance of ineffective, socially harmful laws, institutions, and policies. What is most needed now is a far-reaching debate on alternative approaches that could reduce the risks and damage from the trafficking and abuse of illegal drugs. That was also the conclusion of a highly-regarded report prepared by a distinguished group of Latin American presidents and other leaders. This report proposes six US government initiatives that would set the stage for a thorough rethinking of US drug policy |

review of methodologies for mitigating incidental catch of seabirds in New Zealand fisheries /
This report presents the results of the seabird component of a global review of mitigation methods aimed at reducing mortalities of seabirds, marine mammals and reptiles, and corals from interactions with fishing gear in New Zealand fisheries (and fisheries that operate using similar methodologies). The application of these mitigation methods to New Zealand fisheries is assessed, recommendations made for the fisheries management, and areas for further research in New Zealand identified. Factors influencing the appropriateness and effectiveness of a mitigation device include the fishery, vessel, location, seabird assemblage present and time of year (i.e. season). Realistically a combination of measures is required to reduce or eliminate seabird bycatch, and even within a fishery individual vessel refinement of mitigation techniques is often required in order to maximise their effectiveness. Retention or strategic management of offal and discards are recommended as the most effective measure to reducing seabird bycatch in longline and trawl fisheries. Other recommended methods for both demersal and pelagic longlining include paired bird-scaring lines, line-weighting and night-setting (in some fisheries). Offal and discard management, combined with paired bird-scaring lines, and reducing the time the net is on or near the surface, are likely to be the most effective regimes to mitigate seabird interactions with the warp cables and nets in trawl fisheries. Urgent investigation is needed into more effective measures at reducing seabird interactions with the trawl nets |

Review of riparian buffer zone effectiveness
The purpose of this report is to review and summarise published research on the efficiency and management of riparian buffer zones (RBZ) with respect to the attenuation of sediment and nutrients, and biodiversity enhancement. While there have been numerous studies on the efficiency of RBZ with respect to sediment and nutrients, many of these studies have been small-scale and site-specific. Therefore, a review of these studies needs to consider an assessment of the catchment scale factors that influence the effectiveness of RBZ in attenuating catchment loads |

A recent review of techniques used to detect and control the four introduced rodent species found on the New Zealand mainland and islands (house mice Mus musculus, ship rats Rattus rattus, Norway rats Rattus norvegicus and kiore Rattus exulans) identified the need for better understanding of rodent behaviour. This report provides a review of the published literature on rodent behaviour in relation to control devices, especially bait stations and baits. The review is based on searches of computer databases and information from key researchers on: taste preferences, meal size, neophobia, feeding behaviour, movements, home ranges and territoriality, bait shyness, aversion, resistance, odours, and colour preference. Other aspects of rodent behaviour, including responses to repellents, sounds and traps, are also briefly summarised |

review of the literature on seed fate in whitebark pine and the life history traits of Clark's nutcracker and pine squirrels /
Whitebark pine is a critical component of subalpine ecosystems in western North America, where it contributes to biodiversity and ecosystem function and in some communities is considered a keystone species. Whitebark pine is undergoing rangewide population declines attributed to the combined effects of mountain pine beetle, white pine blister rust, and fire suppression. The restoration and maintenance of whitebark pine populations require an understanding of all aspects of seed fate. In this paper, we review the literature on seed dispersal in whitebark pine. Clark's nutcracker, pine squirrels, and scatter-hoarding rodents are all known to influence whitebark pine seed fate and ultimately affect the ability of whitebark pine populations to regenerate. We also provide a general overview of the natural histories of the most influential species involved with whitebark pine seed fate: Clark's nutcracker and the pine squirrel |

Revision and phylogenetic analysis of the Hadronema group (Miridae, Orthotylinae, Orthotylini), with descriptions of new genera and new species, and comments on the Neotropical genus Tupimiris /
Aoplonema Knight, Daleapidea Knight, Hadronema Uhler, and Hadronemidea Reuter are revised. Aoplonema nigrum, sp. nov., A. rubrum, sp. nov., Hadronema incognitum, sp. nov., and H. mexicanum, sp. nov. are described. Hadronemidea echinata, comb. nov. is proposed for Hadronema echinata Gruetzmacher and Schaffner, 1977. Aoplonemella, gen. nov. is described to accommodate Hadronema festiva Van Duzee, 1910; and Origonema, gen. nov. is described to accommodate Hadronema splendida Gibson, 1918. Scutomiris setosus, gen. et sp. nov. are described from Baja California Sur, Mexico. This new genus is superficially similar to the Neotropical genus Tupimiris. Male genitalic characters not mentioned in the original description of T. scutellatus are illustrated and compared with those of S. setosus, showing that the two are not related. Aoplonema, Aoplonemella, Daleapidea, Hadronema, Hadronemidea, Origonema, and Scutomiris form a monophyletic group herein denominated the Hadronema group. Dorsal habitus color photographs of all the species, scanning electron micrographs of selected species for each genus, and illustrations of male and female genitalic characters are provided for all species. Keys to separate the genera and species treated in this paper are presented. A phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships among the genera is proposed, and host-plant associations are discussed |

Ten previously described species are redescribed (schuhi is excluded, as the type material is presumed lost and Linnavuori's original description and illustrations (Linnavuori, 1994) are not sufficient to distinguish schuhi from most other species). The genus Coridromoides Carvalho is synonymized with Coridromius, and its sole species, Coridromoides carinatus Carvalho, 1956, is transferred to Coridromius. A key to species, color habitus figures, illustrations of male genitalia, photographs of paragenital dissections, and scanning electron micrographs of structural details are provided. Detailed locality information and distribution maps of all species are included. Host plant data is provided for some species |

risk of return : repatriating the displaced in the context of conflict in Eastern Chad /
This 47-page report documents abuses against people who have been returning to their villages from camps for displaced persons in southeastern Chad. The Chadian government should work to improve security in rural areas where many of the displaced are returning. At the same time, the United Nations should make sure that food aid continues to displaced persons living in camps so that they are not compelled to cultivate crops in unsafe areas, the report says.--Publisher description |

Risk, body image, and internalized homonegativity among gay men body building, eating disturbance, tanning, and unsafe sex /
The purpose of this research is to examine how internalized homonegativity, body image, and self-esteem influence sexual behaviors, risky appearance management behaviors (AMB), motivations for risky AMB, and consumer behaviors, using the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance as a guide. Risky behaviors examined include unsafe sexual practices, risky AMB (working-out, over-the-counter muscle-building product use (OTC), steroid use, dieting, binging and purging, diet pill use, laxative use, sun tanning, salon tanning, and cosmetic tanning). Although there is little research linking body image to consumer behaviors, this area was also investigated. Consumer behaviors examined were credit card debt, frequency of shopping, price comparison, groom time, time spent shopping, and enjoyment from shopping. Ten hypotheses investigated the links between body image, internalized homonegativity, self-esteem, risky AMB, and risky sex. A survey methodology was used. An on-line questionnaire was developed which included: (1) the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire; (2) the Nungesser Homosexual Attitudes Inventory; (3) the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory; (4) an Appearance Risk and Motivations scale; (5) the Eating Attitudes Test-26; (6) a consumer behavior questionnaire; and (7) a demographic questionnaire. The website was listed with search engines and search directories, and was advertised with flyers, chat-room postings, and word-of-mouth. Data were stored in a text file, downloaded, and analyzed. Analysis included frequencies, means, simple regression, and multiple regression. Participants were 234 self-identified gay or bisexual men age 18 or older; most were white and lived throughout the United States of America. Results revealed that body image predicts some motives for risky behaviors, such as bodybuilding, OTC muscle-building product use, dieting, and sun tanning; internalized homonegativity predicts appearance evaluation and appearance satisfaction, as well as self-esteem; self-esteem predicts motives for behaviors such as bodybuilding, dieting, and behaviors such as chronic dieting and bulimia; internalized homonegativity predicts chronic dieting and bulimia; and body image predicts enjoyment from shopping. The findings have implications for identity and health-care. Therapeutic programs can use the results to better hone counseling sessions assisting gay men with self-hatred issues. Suggestions are made for safer-sex programs as well. Future research projects on internalized homonegativity and body image are suggested |

Rodent bait preferences in non-target birds
Rodent control operations are being done, using new bait formulations, in native forest remnant areas of the Pureora Conservation Park. To assess potential risk to non-target species, feeding trials were carried out on North Island robins (Petroica australis longipes), which are common in the treated areas. Three formulations of a toxin-free rice-based gel bait, developed by Feral Control, were compared with a standard toxin-free, cinnamon-lured cereal bait. The robins showed little interest in either bait, with only three out of 40 pecking at the gel and only one at the cereal pellets, and the slight amount ingested would have been well below that for a lethal dose if it had contained toxin. It was concluded that rodent control using warfarin-laced baits of the standard cereal formulation or the aniseed-lured gel formulation presented very low risk to non-target species, although trials to determine risks of long-term exposure to these baits was recommended |

role of the Hauraki Gulf Cable Protection Zone in protecting exploited fish species : de facto marine reserve? /
The Cable Protection Zone (CPZ) in northeastern New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf protects a large area of seabed from fishing and anchoring. We assessed whether the CPZ has similar conservation benefits to marine reserves; in particular, whether exploited fish species are more abundant inside the CPZ. Baited underwater video (BUV) was used to assess the abundance of carnivorous fish at stations inside and outside the CPZ in February and October 2004. Sampling was stratified between shallow soft-sediment (20-30 m depth) and deep reef (40-60 m) habitats. Carnivorous fish species were recorded in lower numbers and lower diversity on soft-sediment habitats (nine species) than on deep reef habitats (21 species). Fish assemblage structure on deep reefs was strongly influenced by depth and substratum type, whereas management status (i.e. inside v. outside the CPZ) had no detectable effect. There was also no effect of management status on the size and abundance of snapper (Pagrus auratus), the most heavily targeted fish species in the region. The numbers of legal-sized blue cod (Parapercis colias) tended to be higher at stations inside the CPZ. The overall lack of response of exploited species to protection in the CPZ may be due to the limited time of protection (< 4 years), illegal fishing observed in the CPZ, and/or a limited availability of habitat necessary to hold relatively mobile exploited species. As for marine reserves, CPZs are only likely to be effective in protecting exploited species if they contain areas of suitable habitat and the notake status of the area is enforced |

roles of food and predation in shaping adaptive and maladaptive behaviors in postfire bird species
Resource levels have been widely recognized to change over time as organisms recover from fire damage or recolonize a site after a wildfire. I report on the importance of food limitation versus nest predation on the expression of plastic life-history traits in dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis). Junco clutch size was primarily determined by habitat-specific and seasonal changes in food availability, while nest predation risk shaped egg laying decisions when food was extremely limited. Conversely, nestling growth rates were primarily determined by habitat-specific, seasonal changes in nest predation risk, but were mediated by food availability. Results illustrate that food is more important than environmental risk of nest predation in shaping the expression of clutch size. Overall, results demonstrate the birds assess and respond to variation in nest predation risk and food availability at fine temporal and spatial scales, and that that both factors play an important role in the expression of avian reproductive strategies |
