safety of journalists an assessment of perceptions of the origins and implementation of policy at two international television news agencies /
Being a journalist today can be a deadly pursuit, particularly for those covering conflict and other dangerous assignments. In 2004 more journalists and other media workers were killed than in the last ten years. While it is impossible to guarantee that journalists will not be killed or injured, kidnapped, or detained, a policy has been created to help protect them in the course of their duties. This study examines the perceptions of journalists working for two international television news agencies about this safety policy called the "Joint code of practice for journalists working in conflict zones." This policy was adopted in November 2000 by five major television companies including the television news agencies Reuters Television and Associated Press Television News. This study finds that the policy had significant flaws in how it was formulated and how it is communicated, implemented, and reviewed. Recognising the existence of unequal relations of power and conflicting interests at play in any policy process, this study stresses that in the case of the journalist safety policy, all stakeholders should have participated in the relevant policy stages. This argument arises from researching the policy document as well as from the point of view of managers, and particularly journalists who work on dangerous assignments, either full-time or on a freelance basis for either of the two television news agencies. It finds that while journalists are not generally aware of the policy, they do practice many of its elements as well as a range of their own custom-made strategies to protect themselves. The result is to make the policy less effective than it could be |

Sampling surface and subsurface particle-size distributions in wadable gravel- and cobble-bed streams for analyses in sediment transport, hydraulics, and streambed monitoring /
This document provides guidance for sampling surface and subsurface sediment from wadable gravel-and cobble-bed streams. After a short introduction to streams types and classifications in gravel-bed rivers, the document explains the field and laboratory measurement of particle sizes and the statistical analysis of particle-size distributions. Analysis of particle parameters, including shape, density, and bulk density are also discussed. The document describes the spatial variability of bed-material particle sizes as well as the horizontal and vertical structure of particle deposits. The discussion of sampling procedures and equipment helps the user to make appropriate selections that support the sampling objective. Sample-size estimates may be obtained from empirical data or computed from statistical relationships between sample size and accuracy. The document explains a variety of methods, their usage and prerequisites. A detailed discussion of sampling schemes guides the user to select appropriate spatial sampling patterns necessary to produce representative samples |

Scientific literacy and the reform of science education in Australia a chemistry perspective /
In this context and recognising that the foundation tertiary chemistry course has a major influence in attracting and retaining chemistry students and hence on the production of "trained chemists," the major emphasis of this research is the development of a new curriculum framework for the tertiary Chemistry 1 course. This framework is based on a set of principles and is enabled by three contemporary educational theories which are integrated to form a distinctively balanced curriculum which emphasises the "simplicity of chemistry" and includes the essential educational elements of "learning" and also relates chemical principles and chemical phenomena to social responsibility outcomes. It is believed that this curriculum framework reveals the "excitement" of contemporary chemistry together with its enabling features. Most significantly, it offers students a new, challenging and empowering chemistry learning experience. It is therefore concluded that this new Chemistry 1 curriculum framework has the potential to redress the decline of interest in chemistry at the tertiary level and hence contribute to addressing the increasing demand for "trained chemists." |

Sea cucumbers : a global review of fisheries and trade /
The papers also discuss some of the factors behind the unsustainable use of sea cucumbers and the role and potential benefits of alternative management measures, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The lack of capacity to gather the basic information needed for management plans, weak enforcement, the high demand from international markets and the pressure exerted from resource-dependent communities figure high as important factors responsible for the critical status of sea cucumber fisheries worldwide. Authors concur on the need for immediate actions to stop the trend of sequential depletion of species if we are to conserve stocks biodiversity and sustain the ecological, social and economic benefits of these resources |

Seal callouts in the Kaikoura region involving the Department of Conservation /
Department of Conservation (DOC) staff spend considerable time attending callouts relating to seals, primarily New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri), in the Kaikoura region of New Zealand. This study analyses DOC data on 630 seal-related callouts, relating to 801 incidents, between July 1995 and October 2004. The most common DOC response was "check only" (65.9%), with "no action" taken in only 3.5% of incidents. Most seal-related incidents occurred on the northern side of the Kaikoura Peninsula (44%), with tourists (34%) the most likely to report an incident. The majority of incidents reported were unexplained deaths of seals (40.9%), followed by entanglements (21.5%). Most incidents (97.5%) involved fur seals. Unexplained death accounted for 84.2% of fur seal mortalities; other causes of death included illness/injury (2.4%), vehicle and train strikes (10.6%), direct human harassment (1.4%), and dog attacks (0.5%). Over 97% of vehicle strikes were fatal. Entanglement accounted for 0.8% of fur seal deaths, with 1.7% of these incidents fatal. DOC responded to 89.5% of entanglement related incidents, with a 39.5% success rate in releasing entangled fur seals. DOC callout reports provide useful information on the frequency, outcomes, and location of different types of seal-related incidents and baseline data against which to monitor trends and allocate resources. More emphasis on understanding the causes of unexplained deaths would be beneficial for population management. Monitoring of mortalities associated with entanglements, illness, and road-related incidents is required as human and seal populations continue to increase in the region |

Sector specific sources of competitiveness in the Western Balkans : recommendation for a regional investment strategy - UW restricted
The Western Balkan region benefits from a cost-competitive labor force and geographic and cultural proximity to EU markets. However, cost competitiveness as a source of differentiation is not sustainable. Cost levels are increasing gradually in some sectors, reducing firms' profitability. In order to sustain competitiveness, the Western Balkans needs to move up the value chain, from investing in automated technology to producing higher-quality goods and enhancing its human capital. This report examines the apparel manufacturing, automotive components and business process and technology outsourcing sectors, focusing on market competitiveness factors, industry key success factors and policy recommendations.--Publisher's description |

Seed bank dynamics of selected vegetation types in Maputaland, South Africa
Results showed that the forest/grassland ecotone and grassland vegetation types produced the largest soil seed bank in terms of seed densities and the Licuati forest and thicket vegetation the smallest, in fact the latter had almost no persistent seed bank. Within each vegetation type the seed bank size showed clear seasonal variation. Seed distribution was concentrated in the upper soil layers. The flotation and physical separation method produced much larger seed numbers than the seedling emergence method. Generally, there is no or very little correspondence between the number of species recorded in the seed bank and that of the standing vegetation. It was found that the seed bank of the different vegetation types, if present, was a fairly poor predictor of the species composition of the existing vegetation, especially in terms of woody species |

Selected interactions between phytoplankton, zooplankton, and the microbial food web microcosm experiments in marine and limnic habitats /
In my first experiment (Katechakis et al. 2005) I investigated if mixotrophs influence energy transfer efficiency to higher trophic levels differently than predicted for purely phototrophic organisms. My results indicate that compared to phototrophic specialists mixotrophs may enhance transfer efficiency towards herbivores at low light conditions and in situations when limiting nutrients are linked to bacteria and to the picoplankton. Additionally, the results suggest that mixotrophs may have a stabilizing effect on variations in trophic cascade strength caused by perturbations to light and nutrient supply ratios. My second experiment (Katechakis and Stibor 2005a) served as a first step towards analyzing if the results gained from the first experiment have any ecological relevance in situ, that is, if mixotrophs in nature-like communities can gain enough importance to relevantly influence transfer efficiency and system stability. Competition experiments revealed that mixotrophs may invade and suppress plankton communities that consist of purely phototrophic and purely phagotrophic specialists at low nutrient conditions while high nutrient supplies prevent mixotrophs from successfully invading such communities. In systems where mixotrophs suppressed their specialist competitors they indeed had a habitat-ameliorating effect for higher trophic levels, gauged in terms of plankton food quality |

Separate and interactive effects of consumers and nutrient enrichment on the structure of benthic marine communities
Determining the relative roles of top-down vs. bottom-up forces in controlling the structure of ecological communities is of primary importance because anthropogenic nutrient loading, overharvesting of consumers, and potential interactions of these forces are pervasively changing ecosystems throughout the world. Here I use both field experimentation and meta-analyses to investigate the role of predators in controlling community composition, the relative roles of herbivores vs. nutrient enrichment in controlling the abundance of benthic primary producers, and the influence of herbivore diversity on the community structure of coral reefs. On a coral reef in the Florida Keys, I showed that release from predation by large fishes and invertebrates via exclusion cages allowed population increases in the gorgonian-eating gastropod Cyphoma gibbosum which increased predation rates on gorgonian corals. To directly address the relative roles of top-down and bottom-up forces in controlling primary producers in benthic marine habitats, I used factorial meta-analysis of 54 field experiments that orthogonally manipulated herbivore pressure and nutrient loading to quantify the effects of consumers and nutrient enrichment on community structure. The relative effects of herbivores vs. nutrient enrichment were context dependant, varying with latitude, the type of primary producer, and the nutrient status of the system. To address the influence of herbivore diversity on the community structure of Caribbean coral reefs, I used manipulative field experiments over two years to show that a Caribbean reef changes dramatically as a function of herbivorous fish diversity. The effects of herbivore diversity on community structure were strong in both years of the experiment due to different diet preferences among herbivores. Higher herbivore diversity suppressed macroalgal abundance, increased abundance of crustose coralline algae, reduced coral mortality, and increased coral growth when compared to treatments with lower herbivore diversity. Complementary feeding by different fishes drove these patterns because macroalgae were unable to effectively deter feeding by fishes with different attack strategies. Thus, herbivore diversity appears to play an important role in the healthy function of coral reef ecosystems via complementary feeding of different herbivore species |

September 11, 2001, documentary project
The September 11, 2001, Documentary Project captures the heartfelt reactions, eyewitness accounts, and diverse opinions of Americans and others in the months that followed the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93. Patriotism and unity mixed with sadness, anger, and insecurity are common themes expressed in the sound and video recordings, written narratives, poetry, photographs, and drawings that comprise this online presentation. The day after the attacks, the American Folklife Center called upon the nation's folklorists and ethnographers to collect, record, and document America's reaction. A sampling of the material collected through this effort was used to create the September 11, 2001, Documentary Project. This collection captures the voices of a diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and political cross-section of America during trying times and serves as a historical and cultural resource for future generations |

Sexual and spiritual identity transformation among ex-gays and ex-ex-gays narrating a new self /
Using Burke's (1966) notion of terministic screens and applying Linde's (1993) work on the creation of coherence in life stories, I analyze the role that both overarching metanarrative beliefs and personal narrative constructions play in individuals' attempts to resolve spiritual and sexual identity conflicts and create a coherent sense of self. Narrative is employed by speakers as a means to make sense of their lives and achieve a coherent sense of self. By focusing on stories of the management of identity conflict, I investigate a significant form-function interaction, i.e. the linguistic structures that result when challenges to one of the primary personal and social functions of narrative are intrinsic to the life experience and hence the language event. These narratives are theoretically important because they provide a salient opportunity to test the limits of performativity (Butler, 1990) and the potential of narrative to transform membership in what have come to be viewed as relatively fixed identity categories. Individuals use narrative not only as a means of expressing identity, but also as a primary tool for creating and transforming it; thus, analyzing these narratives' genres, structures, and features provides insight into the critical roles language and narrative itself play in sexual and spiritual identity transformations |

Sexual orientation and the law an examination of the discourse on two Federal Acts in Canada /
This study utilizes the discursive data found through Parliamentary debate and media and organizational documentation concerning these legislative acts in the attempt to uncover aspects of how gay and lesbian sexualities "fit" into the configuration of law and society. It is revealed that legal rights reform and the political context from which it emerges do offer some opportunities for transcending the hegemony enforced through homophobia and heterosexism. For gays and lesbians, however, evidence of resistance to the ideas of progressive change is also implicated in the form and discursive elements of minority rights law and the political process of legal reform. I conclude that while gay and lesbian movements will not see the demands and desires of the liberationist project fulfilled solely through the present legal system, recognition of the varied exigencies of rights-based legal strategies and their social repercussions should assist in providing invaluable insight for activists and other agitators against the status quo in both legal and non-legal domains |

Shortfinned eel found in the acidic Whangaehu River, Mt Ruapehu /
An eel specimen found on the bank of the Whangaehu River, Mt Ruapehu, in late October/November was examined to determine its species and age, together with its gender and sexual maturity, and also to assess its probable movement pattern prior to death. The location at which the eel was found is significant because it is about 6 km upstream of the Tokiahuru/Mangaehuehu confluence, which used to be a traditional eel fishery location for the local iwi Ngati Rangi, and is the first part of the Whangaehu River where its acid volcano-fed waters are significantly diluted. The specimen was shown to be a subadult female shortfinned eel (Anguilla australis), 795 mm long and 1526 g in weight. Age was estimated from sagittal otoliths to be about 31 years in freshwater, and it had lived in a limiting habitat in the last 13 years. Although "average" water quality has probably improved in the Whangaehu River above the Tokiahuru confluence since the 1995/96 Ruapehu eruption, any causal relationship between that and the eel's location may be coincidental |

Silviculture practices for riparian forests in the Oregon Coast Range /
This publication is aimed at watershed councils, government agencies, and specialists (foresters, wildlife and fisheries biologists) interested in riparian area silviculture or watershed restoration. It contains information on the ecology of riparian forests and a checklist of recommended practices and common mistakes made in restoring conifers to hardwood-dominated riparian forests. Our recommendations are based on 1) an evaluation of 34 riparian restoration projects spanning the Coast Range of Oregon, 2) three case studies of riparian restoration projects, and 3) ongoing research projects aimed at learning how to establish or release conifers in riparian forests. We found that project managers were choosing appropriate conifer species and stock types for planting, but the survival and growth of conifers in the understory were poor. Managers were underestimating the competitive power of shrub and hardwood communities. In some cases, conflicting objectives and lack of priority setting led to the failure of expensive projects. We hope this publication will assist managers in efforts to restore healthy riparian forests and dwindling fish stocks |

Singing insects of North America
"The primary goal of this Web site is to enable users to identify crickets, katydids, and cicadas from America north of Mexico. The males of most species in these groups make loud, persistent calls that attract sexually ready, conspecific females. Because the songs are loud and species specific they are usually an easy means of identifying the caller. They also facilitate field and laboratory studies of many sorts. Secondary goals are to attract amateur and professional biologists to the study of singing insects and to provide helpful information and access to literature." |

Site preparation of abandoned fields and early establishment of naturally and direct-seeded birch in Sweden /
Seedling survival and establishment without preparation, and with rotary cultivation, were close to nil, while the other soil preparation methods generally were more effective. Best seedling survival and establishment were obtained on seedbeds created by removing topsoil or by transposing it by deep ploughing or inversion. These seedbeds also suppressed competing vegetation, compared to seedbeds with topsoil at the surface. Seedling establishment after removal of topsoil, amounting to 8% of sown germinable seed, was outstanding on sandy soil, but much poorer on silty soil. The tallest dominant seedlings were found on seedbeds with topsoil within the soil profile. Application of peat litter to the seedbed promoted seedling establishment |

Skills upgrading : new policy perspectives - UW restricted
Skills are key to a better job and a better life, yet acquiring them is often most difficult for the people who need them most: those trapped in low-paid jobs with hard working conditions. Innovative experiments throughout OECD member countries show that barriers to skills acquisition can be overcome. A wide range of actors from government, business and civil society have joined efforts and embarked on initiatives that indeed fill the gap between labor market policy and vocational training, and workers weaknesses and employers evolving needs. There are lessons to be learned from the experiences of Belgium (Flanders), Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States, which are investigated in this book.--Publisher's description |

social construction of "sexual knowledge" exploring the narratives of southern African youth of Indian descent in the context of HIV/AIDS /
This study pays attention to youth of Indian-descent within the context of sexuality and identity and their role in HIV/AIDS. By gaining an understanding of this interaction between identity and sexuality, it adds to our knowledge of the social dynamics that contribute to the prevalence or lack of prevalence of HIV/AIDS within population groups. This study uses a social constructionist discourse analytic framework and aims to explore the construction of sexual knowledge by southern African youth of Indian-descent. The findings indicate that the construction of sex is primarily one of risk and ambiguity. Additionally, the construction of sexual knowledge highlights the significance of gender differentials and the importance of agency and responsibility for sexual education. These constructions reinforce traditional educational roles that contribute to the construction of sex as risky and ambiguous. In addition, a social identity of Indian-ness and othering is used as a strategy to give meaning to the lack of parental responsibility with regard to sexual education. The use of social identity is seen as highlighting the importance of acknowledging the sexual values within which youth are embedded. This study concludes with possible ways to shift these constructions. For example, one of the conclusions suggests the implementation of an alternative school-based sexual education that acknowledges the sexual values in which youth are embedded. Furthermore, this acknowledgement of sexual values should take place within a holistic sex education programme that is positive about sexuality. Additionally, a reframing of youth as capable and active decision-makers in their sexual education is necessitated in order to see youth as a potential resource in HIV/AIDS prevention |

This joint report by IGLYO and ILGA-Europe is a response to the need to bring attention to the social exclusion of young LGBT people in Europe and to put the issue on the agenda of national and European policy-makers. This publication highlights the effect that discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation and gender identity has on young LGBT people's capacity to be socially included and to become active citizens. It also raises awareness about the multiple forms of discrimination that interact to put young LGBT people at a particular disadvantage and risk of exclusion |

There was a succession of the nematode fauna during the eight years after establishment of the experimental grassland, especially indicated by the increase in maturity index of the nematode fauna. The results highlight the need for long-term experiments to reveal successional trends in soil nematode communities after cessation of agriculture. The increase of plant feeders with time, the slow colonization rate and the enhanced abundance of fungal feeders in soil under forbs have implications for nature restoration of former agricultural land |

Some considerations on China's minorities in the 21st century conflict or conciliation? /
On a global scale, there has been a significant increase of ethnic conflicts in the last decade. They constitute one of the main sources of domestic political instability in multi-national countries. Recent opinion polls among Chinese citizens point to growing ethnic conflicts even in China. This paper addresses primarily five sources of conflict: collective memory, political conflicts, economic conflicts, cultural conflicts, and new conflicts arising from economic and social change. It explores various forms of ethnic resistance (active and passive ones, violent and peaceful ones, formal and informal patterns) and suggests possible measures of conflict prevention and reduction of conflicts. Finally it argues that China may provide a good basis for such measures, as ethnic minorities are not only recognized as nationalities, but also are respected by public law and--according to this law--enjoy the same rights as the ethnic majority |

Southern wetland flora field office guide to plant species
The material contained in this illustrated wetland guide will enable persons, regardless of their botanical background, to be able to identify the plants included in this guide. Three hundred species of vascular plants were chosen for inclusion. A decision was made to exclude most species that are true aquatics that live in water, because they are obvious wetland species. Also excluded were those species that most people readily recognize, such as cattail |

Spain - UW restricted
Spain has recently undertaken a major reform of its rural policies, including the merger of the Ministry of Agriculture with the Ministry of the Environment and the recently approved Law on Sustainable Development of Rural Areas. This new framework creates a multi-sectoral and place-based "rural policy of state", making Spain better equipped to address the challenges and opportunities of rural areas. This report - undertaken at the same time as the reforms were being implemented - will interest both policy makers engaged in similar reform processes and others working on issues such the "political economy" of reforms, rural tourism, renewable energies, rural clusters, development of peri-urban areas and public service delivery in remote rural areas.--Publisher's description |

Spatial and temporal relationships of adult male black bears to roads in northwest Montana, 2003-2004
Bear distribution proximate to roads differed significantly (p<0.01) between seasons. Specifically, road use--especially of open roads--decreased from nonhunting to hunting seasons for both samples. Bears avoided roads during the fall compared to summer, which may reduce bear vulnerability during the fall hunt. My research neither fully refuted nor supported the question of whether restricting roads appeared to change the effects of season. Although other possible explanations exist, adult male black bears were less likely to be in the roaded area at times when shooting was legal (during the hunting seasons), which is consistent with the idea that they survive to maturity by avoiding the roaded area thus avoiding hunting and traffic |

Spatial variation in invertebrate communities in New Zealand braided rivers /
Large braided rivers are a distinctive feature of the landscape in several regions of New Zealand. The invertebrate communities of braided rivers have been described as taxonomically depauperate, but recent research has suggested otherwise. We conducted a field survey of 11 braided rivers, collecting benthic invertebrates from six reaches dispersed down each river, and sampling up to five habitats per reach. We compared the taxonomic richness of these braided, multichannel rivers with non-braided, single channel rivers, and found that braided rivers actually support very diverse invertebrate assemblages when all floodplain habitats are included in analyses. We then compared biodiversity patterns within braided rivers. A total of 144 taxa and over 100 000 individuals were collected from the 11 braided rivers. Thirty-four percent of taxa were found in <= 3 rivers and comprised < 1% of all individuals, whereas 13% of taxa were found in all rivers and constituted 80% of all individuals. Total taxonomic richness ranged from 99 taxa in the Wairau River to 56 taxa in the Waiapu River. Surprisingly, no consistent longitudinal pattern in taxonomic richness or density was found; however, braided reaches were more diverse than headwater and gorge reaches. At the reach scale, 80% of lateral habitats (i.e. springs and ponds) were more diverse than their associated main channel. These findings show that despite high variation between and within rivers, lateral floodplain habitats are important biodiversity hotspots. Therefore, any assessment of the diversity of braided rivers must incorporate sampling across multiple spatial scales and include the full range of habitats present in the floodplain |

Spawning abundance of chinook salmon in the Taku River in 2003 /
A cooperative study involving the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the Taku River Tlingit First Nation was conducted to estimate the number of spawning Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the Taku River in 2003 with a mark-recapture experiment. Fish were captured at Canyon Island on the lower Taku River with fish wheels from May through August and were individually marked with back-sewn, solid-core spaghetti tags. All tagged fish were also batch marked with an opercle punch plus removal of the left axillary appendage. Sampling on the spawning grounds in tributaries was used to estimate the fraction of the population that had been marked. The estimated spawning abundance of small Chinook salmon (< 400 mm long; mid-eye to fork of tail) was 3,489 (SE = 1,052). Spawning abundance of medium-size Chinook salmon (401-659 mm) was estimated to be 16,780 (SE = 2,274). Finally, spawning abundance of large-size fish (>= 660 mm) was estimated to be 36,435 (SE = 6,705), and the estimated total of all fish was 56,704 (SE = 7,158). The sum of the peak aerial survey counts of large spawning Chinook salmon conducted at five index tributaries of the Taku River was 16% of the mark-recapture estimate. Age 1.3 fish (1998 brood year) constituted an estimated 40% of the spawning population, followed by age 1.2 fish (1999 brood year), which constituted an estimated 29% of the population |

Species taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeography of the Brontotheriidae (Mammalia:Perissodactyla) /
Nine to twelve intercontinental dispersals, mostly in the middle Eocene (Uintan and Irdinmanhan land mammal "ages") between North America and Asia are implied by the cladistic results. The timing of these dispersals agrees with prior conclusions regarding the timing of large influxes of mammal taxa into North America from Asia. However, the frequency of interchanges is far greater than previously surmised. Following basic MacArthur-Wilson island biogeography theory, North America, the smaller continent, is viewed as a cul-de-sac, receiving repeated waves of immigrants from Asia, the larger continent. However, the phylogenetic results of the Brontotheriidae suggest the possibility that the predominant direction of dispersal could have been in the opposite direction; this result questions the validity of applying island biogeography theory to continent-scale dispersal dynamics |

spreading depths lesbian and bisexual women in English Canada, 1910-1965 /
This dissertation also suggests that women in same-sex relationships before the allegedly more liberal decades of the late twentieth century may actually have had slightly better relationships with families of origin than would later be the case. Greater adherence to notions of duty and obligation, fewer economic opportunities enabling women to live independently of family, the lack of a publicly available discourse of pathology with which families could define and reject their wayward daughters, and the lack of later notions of "alternative" lesbian families and community meant that many remained rather closer to their families than would lesbians after 1965 |

Statistics, knowledge and policy : key indicators to inform decision making - UW restricted
This publication contains the proceedings of the World Forum on Key Indicators held in Palermo in November 2004. In it, statisticians from governmental statistical offices, international organizations, and academia explain why indicator systems are useful and how statistics can be used, how to implement systems related to different kinds of statistics, and what systems are already in place. This conference was the first coordinated world wide effort to study the development and implications of large-scale systems of public information for developed countries.--Publisher's description |

Status and distribution of cheetah outside formal conservation areas in the Thabazimbi district, Limpopo province
The current status of the cheetah Acinonyx jubatus outside formal conservation areas in South Africa is undetermined. The largest part of the cheetah population in South Africa occurs on cattle and wildlife ranches. Conflict between cheetahs and landowners is common and cheetahs are often persecuted. Cheetah management and conservation efforts are hampered as little data are available on the free-roaming cheetah population. A questionnaire survey was done in the Thabazimbi district of the Limpopo province to collect data on the status and distribution of cheetahs in the district and on the ranching practices and attitudes of landowners. By using this method, a population estimate of 42-63 cheetahs was obtained. Camera trapping was done at a scent-marking post to investigate the marking behaviour of cheetahs. Seven different cheetahs were identified marking at one specific tree. Scat analyses were done to determine prey use of the cheetahs in the study area. The most common prey remains from the scats were of the grey duiker Sylvicapra grimmia and the impala Aepyceros melampus. VORTEX analyses were used to investigate the long-term viability of the cheetah population as well as the viability of sport hunting of cheetahs. The current Thabazimbi population is viable over 100 years without immigration, but after 200 years extinction probabilities become unacceptably high. Harvesting through sport hunting is only viable if staggered over several years. Several factors influencing the survival of the free-roaming cheetah population are also discussed |

Status of birds and rodents on Niue following cyclone Heta in January 2004 /
On 6 January 2004, cyclone Heta devastated much of the South Pacific island nation of Niue. Extensive damage was done to forest, particularly of the northwestern sector, with many trees up-rooted and others stripped of branches and foliage. This report details our findings from a survey of Niue's birds and rodents during 3-19 September 2004, and compares these with results from a similar survey in September 1994. Five-minute bird count data, an index of conspicuousness, from three transects showed that heahea (Polynesian triller, Lalage maculosa) were more abundant in 2004 than in 1994, but miti (Polynesian starling, Aplonis tabuensis), kulukulu (purple-crowned fruit dove, Ptilinopus porphyraceus), and lupe (Pacific pigeon, Ducula pacifica) had declined. The 28-64% decline in the lupe population per transect was probably primarily as a result of hunting, rather than mortality caused by cyclone Heta. Counts of birds seen per kilometre along three sections of road (lower, upper, inland) were also compared with September 1994 data. However, for various reasons we doubt that the results accurately reflect population numbers. The 212 kiu (Pacific golden plover, Pluvialis fulva) counted at sites accessible from main roads in September 2004 was similar to the 226 seen in September 1994. Rat trapping results (captures per 100 trap-nights) along the same three transects for December 1994 and September 2004 were not significantly different. Both kuma (Pacific rat, Rattus exulans) and ship rats (R. rattus) were trapped, but kuma were found only in regenerating scrub, whereas ship rats were present in both scrub and forest. Recommendations for future work are made mainly in relation to the long-term conservation of lupe, a toaga (treasured) species of Niueans |

The most important tree species were the African tuliptree (Spathodea campanulata Beauv.), American muskwood (Guarea guidonia (L.) Sleumer), cabbagebark tree (Andira inermis (W. Wright) Kunth ex DC.), and pumpwood (Cecropia schreberiana Miq.). Few unhealthy, stressed trees were noted and widespread pest and disease problems were not observed. Only 12.9 percent of live trees had some type of damage or disease. Average per-hectare amounts of down woody material, forest floor duff, and forest floor litter generally increased as the forest environment became more humid. Small-to-medium forest fire fuels were most common in subtropical dry forests, while medium-to-large fuels were most common in more humid forest life zones |

There were few indications of stressed trees or widespread pest and disease problems. Only 3.8 percent of live trees had some type of damage or disease. Amounts of down woody material (DWM), forest floor duff, and forest floor litter increased as the forest environment became more humid, but overall the U.S. Virgin Islands' forests lack large pieces of DWM on the forest floor, perhaps because they are in an early successional stage and have few large trees |

Staying bush" a study of gay men living in rural areas /
This thesis documents a largely unreported aptitude and proficiency by rural gay men to live in the bush. It suggests that their close affinity with place gives them a sense of belonging that, when combined with their concept of a gay lifestyle, effectively queers the places in which they live. That gay men can live fulfilled lives in the very places they are said to have fled evokes an innovative perspective together with an appreciation of what it is to be gay in the bush |

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) decline and the Gulf of Alaska/Bering Sea commercial fishery
The Steller sea lion (SSL) population in Alaska was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1991. Several procedural restrictions were placed on the commercial fisheries of the region at that time in an effort to reduce the potential for human induced mortality on sea lions. Several years have elapsed since these restrictions were put into place and questions about their efficacy abound. In an effort to determine whether or not fisheries interventions have helped the SSL population to recover, estimates of the fishing activity of the Bering Sea/Gulf of Alaska commercial fisheries in the vicinity of individual Steller sea lion rookeries and SSL population trends at those rookeries were made using data from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Fisheries Observer Program and Steller Sea Lion Adult Count Database. Fisheries data from 1976-2000 were analyzed in relation to SSL population counts from 1956-2001, at 32 rookeries from the endangered western stock. Linear regression on the principal components of the fisheries data show that a positive correlation exists between several metrics of historical fishing activity and SSL population decline. The relationship is less consistent after 1991, supporting a hypothesis that fishing closures around some of the rookeries have been effective in moderating the localized effects of fishing activity on SSL |

Stereotypical perceptions of the communication behaviors of gay males
This study examined the stereotypical communication behaviors of gay males. The study examined the associations of assertiveness, responsiveness, homonegativity, and biological sex. Participants were 359 (195 men, 164 women) students. Participants provided responses to questions about verbal and nonverbal behaviors for known gay individuals and individuals perceived to be gay. The participants then completed the Assertiveness-Responsiveness Measure (Richmond & McCroskey, 1990) in a self-report and observer-report, and the Modern Homonegativity Scale (Morrison & Morrison, 2002). Results indicated some of the more predominant responses to verbal and nonverbal behaviors are inconsistent with the prevalent societal perceptions of homosexuality. Significant associations between biological sex, assertiveness and responsiveness were discovered. The results show that perceived responsiveness and homonegativity were associated. Self-reported assertiveness and self-reported responsiveness were consistent with perceptions of other's assertiveness and responsiveness. There were significant differences based on biological sex, assertiveness and responsiveness. Future research would resolve some of the questions that this research raised, in particular, why are men consistently more likely to illustrate higher levels of homonegativity. Future research should examine other communication constructs that could further resolve many of the questions that plague gay males |

Stoat artificial reproductive technologies /
Artificial reproductive technologies in stoats (Mustela erminea) are currently being developed in New Zealand to control and manipulate stoat reproduction in captivity. In this study, methods were established for liquid (short-term) and frozen (long-term) storage of stoat sperm. Frozen-thawed sperm were shown to be biologically competent in vitro, based on the maintenance of sperm motility and acrosome integrity after culture. A non-surgical artificial insemination technique is in development to confirm that frozen-thawed stoat sperm are capable of fertilising eggs in vivo, but its success is reliant on developing methods of inducing ovulation in females. Ovulated eggs and embryos were only recovered after mating oestrous females. Treatment of anoestrous females with pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) did not reliably stimulate ovarian follicle development and failed to induce ovulation. Treatment of oestrous females with PMSG did not improve the reliability and yield of eggs and embryos recovered after natural mating, or their capacity to develop in vitro compared with untreated controls. For the first time, in vitro culture and the development of in vivo derived one- to four-cell embryos to the blastocyst stage was achieved in stoats, with up to 8% of these hatching. This culture system did not support the viability of diapausing blastocysts in vitro, suggesting that alternative substrates, nutrients and/or co-culture with uterine cell layers may be required. The findings from this study will enhance our ability to breed stoats in captivity and will help establish robust protocols for efficient testing and prioritisation of reproduction-based targets for stoat fertility control |

Stoat captures in a year of heavy mountain beech seedfall /
Reinvasion by (primarily juvenile) stoats (Mustela erminea) into stoat control areas is a major problem for the Department of Conservation. To investigate dispersal and survival of juvenile stoats in South Island mountain beech forest at Craigieburn, baited traplines were set for adult females in late winter and for juveniles in spring of 2002. Despite a heavy seedfall of mountain beech in the preceeding autumn and an associated increase in rodent numbers, catches of stoats did not show a significant increase. The project was terminated in January 2003 because of the low catch of stoats. A summary of the numbers and sexes of stoats captured, as well as stoat capture rates, is provided for future reference |

Stoat zona pellucida genes with potential for immunocontraceptive biocontrol in New Zealand /
Prospective methods for control of stoats (Mustela erminea) and other vertebrate pests in New Zealand include use of virally-vectored immunocontraception (VVIC) as a tool for broad-scale suppression of their reproduction. In this report, we provide the complete stoat and ferret (M. putorius furo) zona pellucida C (ZPC) and stoat ZPB complementary DNA (cDNA) and protein sequences, together with partial coding sequence for putative stoat ZPA protein. Stoat ZPC protein expressed in a vacciniabased system was specifically recognised by rabbit anti-porcine whole zona pellucida immune serum. We suggest that primer sequences used in this study could be used to isolate zona pellucida-coding sequences from other mustelid species. We also review prospective viral vectors for antigen delivery to stoats, and conclude that canine adenovirus-1 warrants further examination for its suitability for use |

Streamside management a decision-making procedure for south coastal British Columbia /
This booklet is a site-specific guide to the management of streamsides on Vancouver Island and south coastal British Columbia for which logging is proposed. It should be considered an aid for field level personnel to determine what logging practices should be used and how much vegetation, if any, should be left along streamsides to provide for the requirements of non-timber users. The procedure deals with the maintenance of fisheries, wildlife, recreational, aesthetic, and water quality values while harvesting timber. It does not deal with stream rehabilitation or stream improvement projects, nor does it consider the trade-offs between resource values. However, it does provide information which may help to make those trade-offs |

Strengthening community capacity to undertake conservation work : sharing conservation skills and knowledge /
Working with communities to achieve conservation objectives is a key focus of the Department of Conservation (DOC). This report addresses how DOC can most effectively support communities to develop skills to carry out conservation work, particularly through sharing scientific and technical information. The study began with an international literature review. The results of this review were used to inform four case studies of successful practice of DOC working with communities. Finally, an action research approach was used to work with DOC to interpret the findings from the case studies and literature review and to identify actions to respond to the results. The results of the literature review were six best practice principles for working with communities as part of skill sharing. The case studies strongly supported the six principles identified in the literature and identified two further principles. The two action research forums supported the findings from the first two stages of the research and identified potential actions that could be explored by both DOC and community organisations to improve information and skill sharing |

Studies in scarlet marriage and sexuality in the U.S & U.K., 1815-1914
Studies in Scarlet presents the images of over 420 separately published trial narratives from the Harvard Law School Library's extensive trial collections. Included are trials of the wealthy and renowned as well as stories of ordinary men and women thrust into the public eye when their marriages and love affairs went wrong. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these published accounts of sensational trials provided the public with both entertainment and cautionary tales. Many titles include illustrations |

Subsidy reform and sustainable development : economic, environmental and social aspects - UW restricted
Subsidies are pervasive in OECD countries and are among the most powerful public policy instruments. But they often introduce unintended consequences, such as budget deficits, pollution, unemployment and trade distortions. This report contains the proceedings of an OECD workshop on subsidy reform held in October 2005 under the auspices of the OECD program on sustainable development. It provides an overview of approaches for assessing subsidies and associated taxes, and looks at country experiences in reforming subsidies in the agriculture, fisheries, industry, and transport sectors.--Publisher description |

Suicide and natural deaths in road traffic review /
Relative to other methods of suicide and injury, literature on suicide and natural deaths in road traffic was scarce, particularly for pedestrian suicides. Available data and literature suggested that driver suicides and natural driver deaths are relatively minor components of road traffic fatalities but may be underestimated. Driver suicides are mostly male and aged 25-34 years. Risk factors are previous suicide attempts, a history of mental illness, and the presence of alcohol. Most natural driver deaths are male, aged 50-70 years, caused by cardiovascular disease, and involve little or no property damage. Reported cases of road traffic suicides and natural deaths are a small proportion of total road traffic deaths but are probably underestimated. Prevention measures should be drawn from general driver and pedestrian injury prevention measures since specific measures were not noted in the literature |

Sullivan County K-12 administrators' perceptions and attitudes regarding harassment and the associated legal liability
The study offers a valuable insight into administrators' perception and attitudes regarding harassment and the associated legal liability. It also offers a number of recommendations including the need for more harassment-avoidance training to combat this problem for middle and high school students. Effective implementation of bullying prevention programs will need to involve all school stakeholders in order to be successful. The results may be used by school systems to plan for future staff development regarding harassment-avoidance training. Students have a right to feel safe at school as they grow and mature into adulthood. It is the duty of all schools to provide them that safe and secure atmosphere |

Surveying for sexuality in cyberspace sexual orientation and stage of change for cervical cancer screening /
A web-based survey was conducted with a variety of online groups to enhance our understanding of cervical cancer screening behavior among women with various sexual orientations, as well as to assess the feasibility of collecting data from women of various sexual orientations via the Internet. While several mailing lists and a forum were used in the sampling, the largest proportion of women came from an online journaling site that has a strong sense of community and where the members are accustomed to participating in online projects. A total of 1,750 surveys were collected, but the sample was limited to the 1,374 women with complete surveys that were from the United States. According to an algorithm that included self-identified sexual orientation, recent and lifetime sexual history and relationship status, the sample included 694 (50.5%) heterosexuals, 499 (36.3%) bisexuals and 181 (13.2%) lesbians. Heterosexual and bisexual women were more likely to be in maintenance than any other stage, while lesbians were more likely to be in any stage other than maintenance than heterosexual and bisexual women were. History of birth control pills, knowing of a health care provider to go to for cervical cancer screening, having positive perceptions about cervical cancer screening, having a history of abnormal pap tests or sexually transmitted diseases, being diligent about health care and believing that a cervical cancer diagnosis is not a matter of chance are positively associated with women being screened, regardless of sexual orientation. Having pro-cervical cancer screening subjective norms and perceiving a cervical cancer diagnosis as being serious are also associated with stage of change, but vary differently based upon sexual orientation. While sexual orientation is significantly related to stage of change for cervical cancer screening, several factors or groups of factors diminish or alter this association. The factor with the largest influence on this association is past or current birth control pill use |

Susceptibility of four bird species to para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) /
The suitability of para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) for the humane control of stoats (Mustela erminea) and feral cats (Felis catus) is being investigated in New Zealand. Birds are potential non-targets that may be affected by this toxin. Therefore, the objective of this study was to test the toxicity of a proprietary formulation of PAPP in four bird species: Australian magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen; n = 40), blackbirds (Turdus merula; n = 20), mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos Pekin breed; n = 20) and weka (Gallirallus australis; n = 21). Birds were orally dosed with PAPP in the form of a 40% paste that had been added to meat as a delivery vehicle. The lethal dose to kill 50% of the sample (LD50) was 1387 mg/kg for magpies, 174 mg/kg for blackbirds, 32 mg/kg for mallard ducks and 568 mg/kg for weka. However, the LD50 value for weka underestimates the risk to this species, as individuals were affected at the lowest dose tested (62 mg/kg), becoming subdued and losing their appetite until they were euthanized 30 h after dosing. Whilst birds are less susceptible to PAPP than stoats or feral cats (LD50 for both of these species is < 10 mg/kg), some bird species are adversely affected, so it will be important to limit their exposure |

Sweden 2010 - UW restricted
How exactly can better regulation policy improve countries' economic and social welfare prospects, underpin sustained growth and strengthen their resilience? What is effective regulation? What should be the shape and direction of better regulation policy over the next decade? To respond to these questions, the OECD has launched, in partnership with the European Commission, a major project examining better regulation developments in 15 OECD countries in the EU, including Sweden. Each report maps and analyzes the core issues which together make up effective regulatory management, laying down a framework of what should be driving regulatory policy and reform in the future. .--Publisher's description |

The thesis concludes with a suggestion that policies to assist survival of native habitat in farmed landscapes need to include ones that encourage the odds in favour of fortuitous circumstance. In the face of globalised economic pressures, policies for conservation of native biodiversity need to involve a "portfolio" of measures that apply to individual landowners and the wider rural community by recognising, assisting, and rewarding management for non-production values |

Synthesis and review of the best available scientific studies on priority areas for biodiversity conservation in marine areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction
"The present report is the first attempt to review and synthesize existing literature for the priority habitats listed in decision VIII/24, which include seamounts, cold-water coral reefs, hydrothermal vents and other ecosystems in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The report presents, in synthesized format, information about the distribution, status and trends (where available), as well as the threats facing these ecosystems. Information about the functioning of these ecosystems and the ecology of associated species is also presented. Finally, the report reviews work that has been undertaken to identify priority conservation areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction"--P. 9 |
