Rather than discovering the popularly perceived group of disturbed malcontents, however, the broad scope of the sources (particularly the interviews) revealed a group of men searching for an historical context into which to place their experiences both during the war and in the following years. The evidence revealed a group of average Australians who, for a period thirty years ago, were asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. The interviews offered the opportunity to provide context to a difficult history, contributing not only to the study of the conflict, but to a wider Australian public memory in a country whose war stories have had so much impact

INFO Ungulate browsing as an ecosystem process browser-plant-soil interactions in a southern African savanna /
I found evidence that long-term selective browsing may negatively affect soil nutrient pool, at least in the vicinity of palatable woody plants. I proposed this might be due to the drastic reduction of leaf-twig litter mass returned to the soil, which likely decreased decomposer activity and negatively affected N mineralization rates. Hence, the processes responsible for a loss of nutrients in the soil were different from those proposed for northern hemisphere scenarios, which were instead due to decreased litter quality. However, I found evidence of high plant resilience in heavily browsed sites where Acacia stands shown (1) higher leaf N during the main growing season, (2) higher N release from leaf litter, (3) high concentrations of nitrate (NO3) and ammonium (NH4), and (4) similar, or even faster, litter decomposition rates than in lightly browsed sites. Firstly, this suggests that tree pruning triggers and maintains a fast nutrient cycling within the plant-browser system. The accelerating effect is supported by high mass compensatory growth abilities from highly palatable, fast-growing Acacia trees that produce highly decomposable litter. Secondly, browsing may have a long-term decelerating effect on N cycling through quantitative changes in litter production rather than through qualitative changes in litter chemistry. Further studies should better address processes related to soil nutrient cycling to confirm such hypothesis. I discuss how the interactive effects of browsing-grazing-soil fertility may influence nutrient cycling trough different ecological processes

INFO Unit cohesion and the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy
The Department of Defense policy of excluding known homosexuals from military service is partially based on the assumption that homosexual service members pose a threat to the cohesion of a military unit. The assumption is drawn largely from anecdotal evidence suggesting that junior service members would be uncomfortable in an environment that accepted homosexuals. This thesis examines the attitudes and opinions of junior officers to determine various aspects of unit cohesion that may be affected by homosexual service members. A series of seven focus group interviews were conducted with officers attending the Naval Postgraduate School in 1996. Analysis of the focus group interviews indicates that junior officers may be far more tolerant toward differing sexual preferences than is assumed; and that the commission of inappropriate acts, such as fraternization, assault, or sexual harassment, may form a stronger basis for exclusion of personnel than sexual preference. Military leaders intent on achieving and maintaining unit cohesion should reexamine the impact that homosexuals have on unit cohesion

INFO Use of family planning services in the United States, 1982 and 1988 /
This preliminary report on the 1988 data from Cycle IV of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) collected by the US National Center for Health Statistics. Compares 1988 figures with the 1982 Cycle III data. 8450 women 15-44 years old across the US were interviewed in 1988. 37% (1982) and 35% (1988) of the women had family planning visits in the previous year. 50% of the 20-24 year olds used family planning services in 1988 (the highest % group), whereas 25-29 year olds were the highest group in 1982. Among teenagers, 41% of the black women and 34% of the white women had a visit. Over 20 years old, the racial differences were not significant. In 1988, low and high income groups were equally likely to use family planning. In 1982, low income women were more likely to have had a visit. 64% of the women used a private doctor and 36% used a clinic (these are similar to 1982 rates). A significantly larger number of black women used the clinics than white in all age groups. Black teenagers use clinics more than white teenagers, however the differential decreased from 1982 (74% vs. 44%) to 1988 (65% vs. 61%). The race differential remained large for women 20 and older (e.g. for 1988, 62% of black and 38% of white women 20-24 years old used clinics). The amount of teenagers using a clinic has risen sharply from 51% (1982) to 62% (1988), whereas only 19% (1982) and 23% (1988) of women over 30 used clinics. Low-income women predominantly use clinics. More low-income white women used clinics in 1988 (56%) than in 1982 (40%). 70% of black women used a clinic for a 1st visit vs. 54% of white women in 1988
INFO Use of herbicidal gels on woody weeds /
This report covers the final group of a series of trials investigating the use of herbicidal gels to selectively control a range of environmental weeds growing in Department of Conservation (DOC) reserves in the North and South Islands of New Zealand and Stewart Island. These trials were set up in early 2000 and assessed at one and two years after treatment. We have investigated a range of application systems to control juvenile and mature trees of (1) Darwin's barberry (Berberis darwinii) in Stewart Island, (2) cotoneaster (Cotoneaster simonsii) in Southland, and (3) grey willow (Salix cinerea) in wetlands near Lake Taupo. Control methods included: (1) applying gel from a bottle on to cut stems; (2) cutting wedges in tree trunks with a pruning saw or axe and applying gel to the wedge; and (3) drilling holes at intervals around the trunk into which herbicide is injected. In a pilot-scale residue study, involving cut-stem and whole-tree treatments of glyphosate or picloram gel to grey willow growing in static water at the Whangamarino wetlands, traces of residues were detected around treated trees and saplings at two to nine weeks after treatment, but levels of residues decreased to nil by 24 weeks after treatment, except in one instance. This information has been used to develop guidelines for DOC staff on how to use herbicidal gel technologies effectively in the field; these are given in the appendix

INFO Use of services for family planning and infertility, United States, 1982
The 1982 statistics on the use of family planning and infertility services presented in this report are preliminary results from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Data were collected through personal interviews with a multistage area probability sample of 7969 women aged 15-44. A detailed series of questions was asked to obtain relatively complete estimates of the extent and type of family planning services received. Statistics on family planning services are limited to women who were able to conceive 3 years before the interview date. Overall, 79% of currently mrried nonsterile women reported using some type of family planning service during the previous 3 years. There were no statistically significant differences between white (79%), black (75%) or Hispanic (77%) wives, or between the 2 income groups. The 1982 survey questions were more comprehensive than those of earlier cycles of the survey. The annual rate of visits for family planning services in 1982 was 1077 visits /1000 women. Teenagers had the highest annual visit rate (1581/1000) of any age group for all sources of family planning services combined. Visit rates declined sharply with age from 1447 at ages 15-24 to 479 at ages 35-44. Similar declines with age also were found in the visit rates for white and black women separately. Nevertheless, the annual visit rate for black women (1334/1000) was significantly higher than that for white women (1033). The highest overall visit rate was for black women 15-19 years of age (1867/1000). Nearly 2/3 of all family planning visits were to private medical sources. Teenagers of all races had higher family planning service visit rates to clinics than to private medical sources, as did black women age 15-24. White women age 20 and older had higher visit rates to private medical services than to clinics. Never married women had higher visit rates to clinics than currently or formerly married women. Data were also collected in 1982 on use of medical services for infertility by women who had difficulty in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term. About 1 million ever married women had 1 or more infertility visits in the 12 months before the interview. During the 3 years before interview, about 1.9 million women had infertility visits. For all ever married women, as well as for white and black women separately, infertility services were more likely to be secured from private medical sources than from clinics. The survey design, reliability of the estimates and the terms used are explained in the technical notes
INFO use of sexual orientation-related insults among college students
The purpose of this study was: to determine what insults college students know and use; to develop a model of insult use in general, and of sexual orientation-related insult (SOI) use in particular; and, to understand the impact of SOI use on students of different sexual orientations. Data were collected from interview participants, field observations on and around a university campus, top-rated movies and TV shows, and two focus groups with lesbian/gay/bisexual (LGB) students. Overall, the interview participants generated 1,453 insults, a mean of 20 insults. Men listed significantly more SOI's than women. The insult categories rated as "worst" by participants were race-related, SOI's, and insults for women. Field data yielded 317 insults. The three most frequent categories of field insults were for women, personality-related insults, and SOI's (accounting for 14.5% of field insults). Fag was one of the five most frequently overheard insults, and was used significantly more frequently by men than women. None of the recorded SOI uses appeared to be directed to an LGB target. The media data yielded 655 insults, with comedies including significantly more insults than dramas. SOI's accounted for 1.8% of media insults. Decisions regarding both serious and good-natured insult use involved four major components: insulter characteristics, social cues to be read, social cues to be conveyed, and the response of the insult target (and sometimes of an audience). The majority of heterosexual participants identified SOI's as inappropriate to direct towards LGB people, though LGB participants described numerous examples of being maliciously targeted with SOI's. Heterosexual participants who were supportive of LGB people were significantly less likely to use SOI's than participants who were ambivalent or disapproving. Heterosexual men used SOI's with greater frequency than heterosexual women. These men used SOI's primarily as tools of peer pressure and regulating gender role expression in other men. SOI's were a safe way for men with traditional conceptions of masculinity to express affection for each other while asserting heterosexuality; less traditional men were less likely to use SOI's

The Most Similar Neighbor (MSN, Moeur and Stage 1995) program is used to impute attributes measured on some sample units to sample units where they are not measured. In forestry applications, forest stands or vegetation polygons are examples of sample units. Attributes from detailed vegetation inventories are imputed to sample units where that information is not measured. MSN performs a canonical correlation analysis between information measured on all units and the detailed inventory data to guide the selection of measurements to impute. This report presents an introductory discussion of Most Similar Neighbor imputation and shows how to run the program. An example taken from a forest inventory application is presented with notes on other applications and experiences using MSN. Technical details of the way MSN works are included. Information on how to get and install the program and on computer system requirements is appended. The MSN Web address is: http://forest.moscowfsl.wsu.edu/gems/msn.html

INFO Using DNA barcodes to investigate the taxonomy of the New Zealand sooty beech scale insect /
It is currently proposed that there are two species of honeydew-producing sooty beech scale insects (Ultracoelostoma spp.) in New Zealand. It is thought that U. brittini lives exclusively on trunks of southern beech (Nothofagus spp.) trees, while U. assimile occurs mainly on branches. This study aimed to confirm this habitat specialisation by using a molecular genetic approach. We sequenced the c. 650 base pair DNA "barcode" region of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) from specimens collected from Mount Grey/Maukatere (North Canterbury), Greymouth, and the Nelson Lakes region. Although the COI sequences supported the existence of two species, there was no evidence of the two species specialising on trunk or branch microhabitats. The excess sugar that these insects excrete as honeydew is an important energy source upon which many native birds and insects depend. Further geographic sampling is needed to determine the distribution and extent of sympatry of the two species detected in this study, which might have implications for forest management decisions

This study attempted to make it clear that accounting for meanings people attach to a particular landscape can be useful when managers are implementing new programs or prescriptive actions that may alter the physical conditions of a site. Wildland fire has the potential to significantly alter the conditions of places. The social impacts of these changes should be accounted for in the early stages of forest planning. It would be useful for managers to work closely with the public to identify special places and how they would like to see them managed. By doing this managers can gain acceptance for new programs

INFO Using temperature tolerance to predict distribution and overwintering success of lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles complex) on the east coast of the United States
Lionfish have been observed at multiple locations along the east coast of the United States, with the majority found between Miami, Florida and North Carolina. The occurrence of lionfish represents one of the first documented invasions of a marine fish species in the western Atlantic. Most lionfish observed along the southeast US shelf have been at depths greater than 35 m, whereas in their native range lionfish inhabit depths from shore to 50 m. One potential limiting factor in the distribution of lionfish on the southeast US continental shelf is winter water temperature. In particular, the northern and inshore distribution of lionfish is predicted to be temperature limited, with Cape Hatteras as the northernmost limit for overwintering. To examine this hypothesis, temperature tolerance studies were conducted following the critical thermal minimum protocol with death as the modified endpoint. Along with temperature at death (CTMin), observations on activity and feeding behavior were recorded. Overall mean CTMin was 9.95C (SD = 0.86) and mean temperature at feeding cessation was 16.07C (SD = 2.14). Rate of temperature decrease and acclimation temperature did not have a significant effect on CTMin or feeding cessation. No fish were observed eating below 13C. When combined with February water temperatures, lionfish thermal tolerance data predicted that lionfish could overwinter on the southeast US continental shelf, with a northern limit of Cape Hatteras and successful inhabitance limited to offshore of the 13C isotherm. Although lionfish can tolerate temperatures lower than 13C, lower temperatures may limit overwintering by controlling feeding behavior. The continental shelf break (200 m isobath) marks the offshore limit for lionfish on the southeast US continental shelf. The current southern limit of the invasion is not bound by temperature, as lionfish could survive but have not yet been reported on the Florida coast south of Miami. Possible reasons for the constrained southern limit may include larval and juvenile transport mechanisms along the Atlantic coast as well as the initial lionfish introduction site

INFO Utility of historical catch data in setting reference points for the British Columbia shrimp by trawl fishery
This paper has been prepared in response to a request from British Columbia shrimp fishery managers to demonstrate the long-term benefits of a science-based assessment, rather than using historical average catches at periods of low levels of fishing. The paper focusses on the utility of historical catch data to set biological reference points for managing the shrimp trawl fishery. It first discusses, in general terms, biological reference point models and the assumptions that need to be met when using historical catch data as an input parameter for reference point models. It then presents information on historical shrimp catch by the shrimp trawl commercial fishery and highlights some of the information constraints. The current assessment framework is briefly reviewed and stock dynamic information is provided, highlighting the large annual fluctuations in shrimp biomass. Finally, the paper demonstrates the shortcomings & pitfalls of abandoning the assessment framework and using only historical catch data to ensure stock conservation of the shrimp stocks along the British Columbia coast

INFO Valuing community group contributions to conservation /
Community groups make an important contribution to the conservation of New Zealand's natural and historic heritage, yet we do not have a clear understanding of the economic significance of this contribution or the conservation achievements it brings. Therefore, 362 community partners of the Department of Conservation were surveyed to find out about the types and benefits of their partnership arrangements, and to estimate the value of the resources they contribute to conservation activities. In total, 201 (56%) of these community partners responded to the survey. Almost half (47.5%) of these had informal partnership arrangements, while 43.5% had a formalised agreement. Groups carried out a wide range of activities, with 58.3% involved in ecological restoration, 57.8% in conservation awareness and publicity, and 55.3% in pest control. The groups had a total annual income of around $12 million, but this income was unevenly distributed, with five groups (3.6%) accounting for 50.8% of all income. For every $1 of government funding, groups received, on average, $1.34 of income from non-government sources. The groups involved 6232 volunteers who gave 174 812 hours of labour over a year. This equates to around 233 full-time equivalent volunteers, or 21,850 workday equivalents. Thus, the total financial value contributed by the groups over 12 months was estimated at $15.8 million, which represents a return of $3-$4 for every $1 of government funding contributed through grants or contracts. In terms of conservation outcomes, groups were making the greatest contribution to increasing community participation and the least contribution to improving historic/cultural heritage. Groups identified a lack of funding as the main obstacle to their success. While acknowledging that the full implications of the results are not yet known, the report concludes by identifying 29 recommendations to support improvements in policy making and planning, and service delivery in relation to working with the community and voluntary sector

INFO Variation in inter-territory reproductive success of takahe introduced to predator-free islands /
The endangered New Zealand flightless rail the takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) has been introduced to four island refuges. Takahe have increased in numbers on these islands, but population growth has been slower than expected due to poor hatching and fledging success. Takahe are strongly territorial, and appear to favour specific areas on each island in which to breed. The aim of this study was to compare fledging success among territories on each of the four islands to determine if inter-territorial differences existed. Only Maud Island showed significant variation in fledging success among territories. For Kapiti and Mana Islands, more of the variation in fledging success was explained by differences among pairs than territories. Overall, reproductive success on most territories was low, with only 7 of 23 territories having a mean fledging rate greater than 60%. Because we cannot predict what is likely to be a good territory from one year to the next, we conclude that differences in territory quality of presently utilised nesting areas may not be great enough on any of the islands except Maud to warrant management measures to potentially improve some of these sites

This study characterised the vegetation of Whanganui National Park, North Island, New Zealand, using data from 470 temporary reconnaissance (recce) plots measured in 1986/87 and 39 permanent forest plots established between 2001 and 2006. The Whanganui forest comprises a range of plant species, but was homogenous across the area surveyed. Unlike other North Island forests, there were no strong relationships between vegetation composition and factors such as altitude or latitude, confirming earlier, qualitative descriptions. This indicates that forest composition in Whanganui varies at the local scale, and is probably driven by small changes in soil type, topography and disturbance history. Species selected by ungulates were found to be less common in the browse tier than in the canopy, which suggests that regeneration is being suppressed. Relative abundances of common species in the permanent plots differed from those in the more extensive recce plot network, suggesting that the permanent plot network was not representative. Since no distinct forest types were identified, use of a stratified sampling design will not remedy this. Instead, the number of plots should be increased. It was calculated that the number of vegetation plots in Whanganui National Park and surrounding conservation areas should be increased to at least 60 unfenced forest plots. A smaller number of exclosure plots (each paired with an unfenced plot) should be used to indicate the potential of the forest to recover if ungulates were eradicated. Targeted monitoring methods should be used for the short-term assessment of wild animal management

INFO vegetation potential of natural rangelands in the mid-Fish River valley, Eastern Cape, South Africa towards a sustainable and acceptable management system /
Desertification is the diminution or destruction of the biological potential of land, and can lead ultimately to desert-like conditions. The vegetation of southern Africa is claimed to have altered over the past 100 years and much of the change is attributed to pastoral practice. In recent years however there has been much debate around the issue of the deterioration and loss of productivity of the natural rangelands, specifically those under communal management. It is one thing to claim that the vegetation has changed but quite another to produce data and analyses to show this unequivocally. Furthermore it is generally difficult to determine the nature and extent of change in natural ecosystems, as one does not know what the optimal base-line conditions should be. For this reason emphasis has been placed on developing models of potential or expected vegetation. By comparing a model of potential or expected vegetation with that of the contemporary vegetation, areas that deviate from expectation can be identified, in so doing providing evidence of the direction of change in the rangelands under various management treatments. The objective of this study was to determine shifts in the vegetation under different land-use treatments, by developing a technique to predict the potential vegetation of an area. In order to explore the nature and extent of degradation at the landscape scale a study site was selected where a range of land-use and rangeland management practices could be studied in parallel. The mid-Fish River valley consists of three markedly different units of land management, namely commercial rangelands, communal rangelands and nature conservation areas. The vegetation within the mid-Fish River valley falls within the Thicket biome and consists of three main vegetation types namely, Short Succulent Thicket, Medium Succulent Thicket and Mesic Bushclump Savanna. The creation of this potential vegetation model was dependent on the direct gradient analysis approach of relating the community patterns with environmental variables. To achieve this, floristic information was collected at sites along a topographical-moisture gradient. A Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) between the environmental variables and the plant communities produced a classification from which the conditions normally associated with the major plant communities were predicted. When projected as a digital map, the qualifying sites provided a testable hypothesis of the potential vegetation. The results of this study showed a definite grazing gradient, which reflects a change from a more mesic environment towards a more arid environment with an increase in utilisation pressure. The predictive vegetation model proved to be useful for predicting the occurrence of the valley thicket communities within the Eastern Cape

INFO Violence in Andijan, 13 May 2005 an independent assessment /
During May 12-13, 2005, in the Uzbekistan city of Andijan, a band of heavily armed men stormed a national jail in which some of their friends were being held, releasing their friends and also several hundred other inmates, many of whom had been sentenced for capital crimes. The attackers killed some sixty people in the process, including prisoners who, out of fear for their lives, tried to return to the jail. A large crowd assembled and within hours armed security forces fired into it, killing a large number of persons. Beyond these bare facts, nearly everything concerning the Andijan events is surrounded by controversy. What was the background to the attack? Were those held in jail honest local businessmen or corrupt rent-seekers funding Islamic extremism with profits from illegal deals with the previous administration that had been exposed by a new governor? Did troops fire on a mixed crowd consisting of those who stormed the jail, released prisoners, and local supporters, or on a passive crowd of innocent bystanders? How many were killed: fewer than 200, up to 1,500, or more?

Cape Reinga is an important cultural and spiritual site in New Zealand, especially for Maori. It is administered by the Department of Conservation, in partnership with Ngati Kuri. International visitors comprise c. 59% of the peak summer visitors. The majority of visitors are either less than 39 years or more than 50 years old, and approximately half visit on a tour. Domestic visitors are mainly under 49 years old and are more likely to visit by car. Site usage differs little between New Zealanders and international visitors; and the majority visit Cape Reinga for sightseeing. At the site, approximately 81% of visitors stay near the car park and lighthouse. When the number of visitors at the Cape Reinga site exceeds 150, up to 20% feel that parts of the site are crowded. Future development and management must enable Cape Reinga to absorb the projected growth in visitor numbers and reduce perceived crowding while retaining the cultural and landscape values of the site

Finally, the issues unique to lesbian relationships, the process of coming out and women's experience of the lesbian community are explored. The documentation of history of this marginalized, and here-to-fore invisible population challenges traditional accounts of life in Calgary and provides a broader perspective of the makeup of the city. INFO Volume yield to mid-rotation in pure and mixed sown stands of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies in Sweden /
Volume yield to mid-rotation in pure and mixed sown stands of Scots pine and Norway spruce was investigated in an experiment in central Sweden. The 43-year-old stands were situated on a 7-ha site and were treated and inventoried at the time of establishment, then at intervals in the life of the stands, to give results at half-rotation age. The dynamics of the mixed stands implied a favourable ecological mixed-stand effect on the height growth of spruce in early development and before crown closure. Even at this stage, pines were taller than spruces, but height was not influenced by admixture with spruce. Pines continued to grow faster than spruces in both height and diameter, resulting in dense mixed stands with dominant pines and co-dominant or suppressed spruces. Diameter of pines was increased by weaker competition for nutrients, while weaker competition for light led to a lower height of dominant pines in mixed stands than in pure pine stands. The results indicate a slight etiolation effect of competition for light in the crown layer. Total volume yield was higher in mixed stands than the mean yield in pure stands of pine and spruce, mainly owing to the dominance of pine in mixed stands. However, it was lower in mixed stands than in pure pine stands. The growth dynamics to the present time indicates that, after a slow start, volume growth of spruce increases remarkably in pure stands and increases slightly in mixed stands. while volume growth of pine began early and is culminating

During the early part of the 20th century the Pacific Northwest experienced an influx of inhabitants leading to rapid development in the area. Settlers were still arriving, when farmable land and available water were getting scarce. Large and small irrigation and reclamation projects were planned, funded, and constructed during this period. The profound impact of the settlers on the indigenous Native American population is vividly documented in the newspaper clippings selected

INFO Washington herp atlas
The Washington herp atlas serves two primary purposes. The first is to provide the most current information available on Washington's herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles, or "herps") including information on life history, habitat, status, threats, management concerns, and distribution. The second purpose is to obtain additional information about Washington's amphibians and reptiles. To obtain reliable information, identifications must be accurate. To facilitate this, the atlas has species accounts that feature descriptions, identification tips, habitat information, and photographs. The photographs include a variety of life stages, typical habitat, and a set of annotated photographs with key identification features indicated. In addition, inventory and research needs for each species are listed

A major focus of this program involves the retrieval, processing, and immobilization of waste into stable, solid waste forms for disposal. Waste Forms Technology and Performance, a report requested by DOE-EM, examines requirements for waste form technology and performance in the cleanup program. The report provides information to DOE-EM to support improvements in methods for processing waste and selecting and fabricating waste forms. Waste forms technology and performance places particular emphasis on processing technologies for high-level radioactive waste, DOE's most expensive and arguably most difficult cleanup challenge. The report's key messages are presented in ten findings and one recommendation."--Publisher's description

INFO We gotta get out of this place" a qualitative study on the effects of leisure travel on the lives of gay men living in a small community /
A feminist point of view is used in this study of gay men living in a small, collegiate community who use leisure travel as a negotiation strategy to achieve freedom of expression. Feminism is concerned with equality, empowerment, social change, the elimination of invisibility and the distortion of situated experiences. Feminist research is no more defined by the sex of the researcher than by the sex of the researched. Several in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants who revealed the complex nature of how many gay men pursue leisure experiences that are affirming to their gay self-identities in "Soledad." While gay meeting places and people exist in this small community, they remain mostly covert and invisible. Leisure travel to larger cities was a major negotiation strategy used to escape the stifling, hetero-normative community in which they lived. Escaping perceived hostilities was essential for gay men to feel comfortable exploring their homosexuality in a positive, affirming manner. Furthermore, the benefits of leisure travel bled into the daily lives of gay men after leisure travel was performed. For instance, leisure travel helped gay men make other gay friends who helped them cope with their homosexuality, and, in the process, they helped them "learn" how to be gay. The skills and experiences these gay men acquired while pursuing leisure in other places helped them transform their daily lives and home community into a more bearable place to live, thereby making home an easier place to negotiate. Gay men were able to discover a whole new set of possibilities of how to express themselves and discovered a new "gaze" by which to view the world. This research adds to the literature on travel and tourism, while expanding the information we have concerning the gay subculture that is becoming more socially and politically efficacious and economically powerful. Likewise, some of the gaps in the literature concerning leisure constraints and negotiation are also filled by this research

Case studies of lesbian teachers and students in lesbian teachers' composition classrooms indicate in a preliminary way that students' choice of writing topics, student writing, and student subject positions are affected by the presence of out lesbian composition teachers

INFO When parents come out as parents of gay and lesbian children a transformation of the self /
This study examines how and why parents of gay and lesbian children come to join a support and advocacy group when same-sex attraction and sexuality are still considered deviant and immoral by the majority of society. Based on participant observation of and interviews with parents in two separate support and advocacy groups this study examines how parents come to define themselves in terms of the issues they are fighting for, in this case gay and lesbian acceptance, inclusion, and equality. This research also examines how parents formulate new religious convictions to satisfy their new parental role as supporter and advocate of their gay or lesbian child, all the while maintaining that they are normal, moral, and good parents, replacing this courtesy stigma with exemplary parenting. In addition, this study explores how parents re-tell stories from their child's past, using "retrospective interpretation" that foretell their child's gay or lesbian identity in adulthood. These stories rely on any deviation from culturally accepted and expected gender roles and norms, which are then interpreted as "evidence" or "indicators" that the child was always gay or lesbian and would be in adulthood as well. Furthermore, the parents create a new self based on their religious alterations and the location of artifacts in the child's past that predict a gay or lesbian identity
INFO When will my turn come? the Civil Service purges and the construction of a gay security risk in the Cold War United States, 1945-1955 /
The homophobia that characterized the early Cold War was new, more intense, and unique to that moment in history. Full-scale investigations and purges of suspected gays from the Civil Service began in 1950, but possessed deeper roots in the politics and culture of the era. They were stimulated by a combination of Cold War anxiety, post-war conservatism, and a changing conception of the nature of homosexuality. The effects of the purges would include not only widespread dismissals and intensified repression of gays and lesbians, but also the emergence of gay activism and the concept of a distinct gay minority. The evolving nature of gay identity, especially self-identity, is ultimately central to the thesis topic. This thesis is one of a small, but growing number of works that attempt to comprehensively examine the origins, characteristics, and impacts of the Lavender Scare. It draws on a wide range of sources, including the most recent specialized studies and the best available primary sources, including archival materials, first-hand recollections of events, and newly declassified government documents

INFO willow and the palm an exploration of the role of cricket in Fiji /
Relating the role of cricket to the concept of national identity within the Fijian state posed problems. National identity is intrinsically linked to nationalism and nationalism to the nation. Fiji does not fit comfortably within accepted definitions of the nation. During the period covered by the study, indigenous Fijians acknowledged cultural differences in their own society but retained a cohesive sense of ethnic identity which consolidated their polity. Nationalism, and national identity, presupposes an "other." For Fijians the "other" was the immigrant Indian community, not the British. The need to prove themselves against the coloniser, which drove other British colonies, did not motivate the Fijians. They were not establishing a "new" national identity, only strengthening and re-working their existing identity to fit new circumstances. Hence their interaction with the game of cricket did not take on the political overtones experienced in other colonies
INFO Willow resilience on Yellowstone's Northern Elk Winter Range a function of environmental gradients /
Willow, a deciduous, woody shrub, is a characteristic and often dominant riparian species that has been unable to successfully regenerate throughout much of its western range, and Yellowstone National Park is no exception. The primary objective of this study was to understand growth and maintenance of established willow stands as a community and as individual species following winter browse. These were based on the premises that (1) different levels of herbivory produce varying levels of compensatory growth, (2) different channel types provide diverse hydrologic conditions for vegetation establishment and maintenance, (3) riparian biodiversity is a function of fluvial dynamics and is increased by the degree of hydrologic connectivity of the system, and (4) the possibility of willow species being either generalist (showing water source shifts) or specialist (availability doesn't influence water source). Site selection and design, and sampling scheme were designed to evaluate biophysical gradients both within and between sites over time. Gradients of biophysical parameters were quantified throughout the growing season. Regressions were used to identify relationships among physical and biological parameters or characteristics. Vegetative communities were compared using Sorenson's similarity index. Ecosystem functions that influence willow presence on the Northern Range include establishment, browse pressure, and maintenance and resilience or their ability to recover. Establishment of willow was a result of availability of their preferred water source while winter decline was a function of location and herbivore preferential selection. Maintenance and resilience were dominated by soil water use in the early season and groundwater use later in the season but with distinct variations between hydrologic systems. Nutrient availability and hyporheic connectivity, essential to dispersing those nutrients among the plant communities, also may influence growth and resilience of willow plants. However, excess or even "acceptable" levels of only one of the physical factors was not enough alone to control dominant plant growth and response to herbivory

We radio-tracked two male and one female Virginia northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus fuscus) in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, in winter 2003 and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in winter 2004, respectively, to document winter home range and habitat use in or near ski areas. Male home range size in the winter was larger than that reported for males during summer and fall, whereas the female home range we observed was smaller than those reported for summer and fall. However, winter habitat use was similar to summer and fall habitat use reported in other studies. Virginia northern flying squirrels foraged and denned in both red spruce (Picea rubens)-dominated forests and northern hardwood forests; however, selection of red spruce-dominated forests and open areas was greater than expected based on availability. Use of northern hardwood forest occurred less than expected based on availability. Male squirrels denned near, and routinely crossed, downhill ski slopes and unimproved roads during foraging bouts, whereas the female approached, but did not cross forest edges onto roads or trails

The first full, annualized inventory of Wisconsin's forests was completed in 2004 after 6,478 forested plots were visited. There are more than 16.0 million acres of forest land in the Wisconsin, nearly half of the State's land area; 15.8 million acres meet the definition of timberland. The total area of both forest land and timberland continues an upward trend that began in the 1960s. Red maple, sugar maple, and quaking aspen are the most common trees with diameters at breast height greater than 5 inches; there are 298, 250, and 244 million trees of these species, respectively. Aspen is the most common forest type, followed by sugar maple/beech/yellow birch, and white oak/red oak/hickory. This report includes detailed information on forest attributes and health and on agents of change such as the introduction of nonnative plants, insects, and diseases and changing land-use patterns

INFO Wobbly possum disease in the Wilkin and Young Valleys, Mount Aspiring National Park /
Anecdotal reports suggested that brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) numbers had fallen sharply in the Wilkin and Young Valleys, Mount Aspiring National Park, New Zealand, in spring 2005, possibly indicating a localised disease outbreak. Attempts were made to recover sick possums from that area for post-mortem examination, to determine whether wobbly possum disease was prevalent. Trap-catch monitoring was also carried out to objectively assess possum abundance and to compare this assessment with that estimated about 2 years previously. Only one of six possums autopsied was confirmed to have wobbly possum disease. The trap-catch index was 50% lower in the Young Valley (19%) but 50% higher in the Wilkin Valley (55%) than recorded on the previous monitoring occasion. This study identified the presence of wobbly possum disease in this region, but failed to provide evidence of a recent outbreak that may have led to a fall in possum numbers. This does not preclude the possibility of disease outbreaks being contained within localised areas

Over time, the international community has launched initiatives aimed at improving the conservation status of commercially-exploited aquatic species. The four separate studies in this report target four species or groups of species with an international conservation profile and which are traditionally under-represented in market and industry literatures. These species are sturgeons (Acipenseriformes), Caribbean queen conch (Strombus gigas), sharks (Chondrichthyes), and Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides). The sturgeon and caviar industry is a commercial one, with traditionally high capture and export patterns. The queen conch fishery is an important provider of employment and income among fishing communities in the Western Central Atlantic area. The shark fishery is a relatively large and financially important one. Sharks are mainly taken as bycatch of other commercial fisheries such as tuna and billfishes. The Patagonian toothfish is exploited by an industrial fishery which is concentrated in the southernmost areas of the Atlantic and the Pacific and in Antarctic waters

INFO Worldwide review of bottom fisheries in the high seas /
The Worldwide review of bottom fisheries in the high seas provides states and other interested parties with a summary of the current status of high seas bottom fisheries worldwide based on the best information available, including responses to an FAO questionnaire sent to high seas fishing states, the European Community and relevant regional fisheries management organizations. It contains reviews of bottom fisheries in the high seas in the following regions: the North East and North West Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the South East and South West Atlantic, the North and South Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. Fisheries are described in terms of fleets, catch and effort, and main species caught, with due consideration being given to the location of fishing activities. This document was prepared in response to the request by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) and related consideration of the issue of bottom fisheries on the high seas by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 61/105 on Sustainable Fisheries adopted in December 2006. It also aims at assisting in the implementation of the FAO International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas by providing background information and highlighting gaps in the available data. According to the findings of this review, 285 vessels were active in the high seas bottom fisheries worldwide in 2006. The total catch of this fleet has been estimated to about 250 000 tonnes valued at EUR 450 million (landed value). For various reasons discussed in the report, these are to be considered minimal estimates

INFO Writing the love of boys representations of male-male desire in the literature of Murayama Kaita and Edogawa Ranpo /
Chapter Four examines Ranpo's essays on representations of male-male desire in Kaita's work, which he saw as embodying an innocent and especially poignant form of boyish affection. These essays, along with Ranpo's autobiographical essays about his crushes on other schoolboys during his youth, implicitly attempt to disassociate the love of boys from the moralistic and pathologizing rhetoric of sexology. As Chapter Five shows, some of Ranpo's early fiction, including "Ningen isu" ("The human chair," 1925), "Issun-bohi" ("The dwarf," 1926-1927), "Ryoi no hate" ("The fruits of curiosity-hunting," 1930), shows an ambivalent attitude toward male homoeroticism. These works contain caveats reassuring readers about the "strangeness" of male homoeroticism even though they cater to the scopophilic curiosity of readers by incorporating scenes of male-male attraction. Similar dynamics are visible in the novel Koto no oni (The demon of the lonely isle, 1929-30), which features a man who prefers sleeping with men. Although the narrative voice describes the character's feelings in sensational terms, at other times, Ranpo allows the character to describe his feelings in ways that make them comprehensible to the audience. Chapter Six examines Ranpo's essays from the 1930s on same-sex desire in the writing of other authors, including Edward Carpenter, John Addington Symonds, and Walt Whitman. These essays represent a product of Ranpo's ongoing explorations of the meaning and historical manifestations of same-sex love. Although these essays deal gingerly with the subject of male homoeroticism, these essays, like Ranpo's autobiographical essays, defend boyish love and male camaraderie as beautiful and socially useful while arguing for the important position of male-male desire has played in literary history

Xinjiang, China's western border province comprising eighteen percent of the country's entire land area, is a region beset by change, and increasingly, confrontation between two very distinct peoples -- the more recently arrived Han Chinese and the indigenous Uyghur Turkish Muslims. The confrontation revolves primarily around a struggle for domination over the province and a Uyghur quest for autonomy or even independence from Beijing's rule. Conflicting interests and goals thus offer two quite different visions and narratives of current Xinjiang realities, reflecting the distinct concerns of each people

INFO Yield of Larix sukaczewii Dyl. in northern Sweden /
The stem volume yield of twenty small stands of larch, mainly Larix sukaczewii Dyl., was studied in northern Sweden. The stand age range was 34-89 years. On the most productive sites trees attain a dominant height of 27 m at age 60 years. Tree height increment is still continuing at age 90 years. The productivity of larch varies widely, depending on site quality. During a 100-year rotation, the total volume yield of larch on medium sites was calculated at 500 m3 ha-1, and at 1000 m3 ha-1 on the most productive sites (both including bark). On the most productive sites, stem volume yield of larch exceeded that of indigenous conifers by 10-25 per cent (excluding bark). On poor, dry, flat or waterlogged sites the yield of larch was inferior to that of indigenous conifers. On high-altitude sites, surprisingly high yields were observed

INFO Young queers getting together moving beyond isolation and loneliness /
This study highlights the importance, for many young queers, of having opportunities and spaces where they can connect with each other. Socialization and sexualization among young queers involves a certain openness--being and doing queer--a practice which is unintelligible within most education-focused research/studies on young queers. This is illustrated and explored through comparative analysis of queer subjectivities in two differentiated spheres: on the one hand--education-focused research and studies relating to the school context, and on the other--gay/lesbian/queer studies and literature relating to queer social and sexual contexts. The key contexts and themes examined here are: early sexual experience and beats, queer cultures and communities, and queer youth support and social groups

INFO Zebrafish (Danio rerio) husbandry and colony maintenance at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center /
"This technical memorandum describes the protocols and procedures for maintaining a small-scale zebrafish (Danio rerio) operation at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Environmental Conservation Division. Detailed descriptions are presented for Zebrafish Module maintenance, spawning, larvae rearing, adult feeding, quarantine procedures, and general fish health. These protocols may not be appropriate for all zebrafish system sizes and configurations; however, small zebrafish laboratories may find that this technical memorandum provides useful guidance for managing a healthy, breeding zebrafish colony"--Executive summary
