UWill tutorials are Web page templates that contain essential baseline instruction related to information production, distribution, retrieval, and evaluation. As an instructor or librarian, you may insert content or modify some elements of the template, in order to make meaningful reference to your own course or assignment objectives. Most examples may be changed to reflect your discipline or assignments. The tutorials can be used with only a Web browser, and instructors can collaborate with UW Librarians to customize them and to support, manage, and evaluate student research assignments.
The learning objectives for UWill tutorials are based on the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, approved by the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). This document can be viewed on our " Information competency" page, linked in the menu at the left of this page.
Learning objectives for information competencies should be synchronized with course learning objectives and integrated with your course assignments. Consult with colleagues, departmental curriculum planning groups, or your subject librarian, for advice on which information objectives best apply to your department or course goals for student learning and which UWill tools will best support those objectives. UWill welcomes interest from any department or individual faculty in speaking further about learning outcomes related to information competencies for your students.
UWill tutorials may be employed for a number of purposes and in a variety of ways. They are not intended to provide straightforward Web pages with lists of links to information for students working on course projects requiring library- and information-based research. They are originally meant to be assignments that focus on learning the process of doing library or information research. The UW Libraries offers a number of services for students doing specific research projects, including subject pages, Library classes and class help pages, one-on-one consultations and reference. The Catalyst tool SimpleSite, developed by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, is a Web application that lets you create template-based Web pages and publish them to your Web site without using FTP.
