Finding Academic Journal Articles
|
What is an academic journal article?
|
An academic journal article:
- Is written by a professor or researcher in an academic discipline
- Reports on research or provides a scholarly analysis of a topic
- Is published in a refereed journal-a journal which uses a panel of
academic referees to select articles for publication
- Documents its sources in footnotes or a bibliography
|
Not sure whether an article is academic or not? Show the article
to your TA or to a reference librarian!
|
|
How do you find academic journal articles?
|
Using Expanded Academic Index, do a keyword search and limit your search
to academic journal articles by clicking on refereed publications.
- Use an academic database such as Geobase or PAIS International. Most
of the sources listed in these databases are academic journal articles.
|
If the database provides only the citation or abstract
for an article, how do you find the complete article?
|
- Go to the UW Libraries Catalog, click on Journals and do a search
for the title of the journal.
If the journal is listed in the UW Libraries Catalog, it will either
link you to the electronic version of the journal OR, indicate
where you can find the printed journal (Odegaard periodicals, suzallo
periodicals, etc).
If the journal is not listed in the UW Libraries Catalog, you may be
able to request it from another library. Ask for assistance if you have
not done this before.
|
Are you having trouble finding academic journal articles on your
organization? It is possible that academic journal articles have
not been written about your organization. In that case, you need
to find academic articles that discuss the issues that your
organization deals with.
For example, if you can't find academic articles on "The Gap,"
try searching for: "clothing industry and globalization," "textile
industry and international," etc.
Try to use a variety of keywords to find academic articles on your
topic.

If you can't find the journals you need, ask a librarian!
