Searching for phrases

Sometimes you might want to search for an exact phrase, such as:

  • conspicuous consumption

  • supply-side

  • United States

  • capital punishment

Using an Internet search engine, you would enclose the phrase in quotation marks:

  • "conspicuous consumption"

  • "supply-side"

  • "United States"

  • "capital punishment"

Phrase searching in periodical databases varies. Some databases use quotation marks for phrases. While others do not. Check the HELP screens for the particular database you are using.
