Open Education is part of the Curriculum Support Services unit of the University of Washington Libraries Learning Services, which also includes Undergraduate Student Success; Libraries Instructional Design and Outreach; and Access & Building Services for Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning resources (including textbooks, videos, course modules and syllabi) released under an open license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. Support for Open Education at the UW Libraries involves promoting the creation and use of OER by UW faculty, as well as support for textbook affordability initiatives. The Open Education librarian helps faculty author and publish OER using the Pressbooks platform, and supports students who are creating openly licensed materials as part of their UW coursework. These services aid in making course materials more affordable and accessible, as well as in educating students about their rights and responsibilities as student authors. At the University of Washington, diversity is integral to excellence. We value and honor diverse experiences and perspectives, strive to create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity and justice for all. |
