Job Description & Duties:

The Open Education Intern will provide support to UW faculty and students in authoring and publishing OER using the Pressbooks platform. The Intern will also support outreach efforts designed to highlight the benefits of OER, and promote UW-authored free textbooks.  The Intern will gain experience with open publishing activities in an academic library environment, and learn more about UW Libraries services and programs. This internship will provide the unique opportunity to directly support and influence library program support for open and affordable educational resources. We hope that the successful candidate will help us shape the future of OER support at UW by contributing their own student experience and knowledge. The intern will be mentored in a supportive environment, and after the initial training period, the intern will meet weekly with, and receive regular feedback from, the Open Education Librarian.

Duties:

  • Assists in the planning and delivery of online workshops for UW students and faculty on open pedagogy and open publishing.
  • Provide general training and troubleshooting for users of Pressbooks, an ebook authoring tool designed for UW instructors to author open, free textbooks.
  • Edit and create guides on OER and open publishing for UW faculty and students.

  • Assist authors in making corrections to the layout and formatting of works they have written in Pressbooks, to improve accessibility and usability of online books.

  • Helps with promotion of Open Educational Resources through UW Libraries social media and faculty OER listserv

  • Assist with gathering metrics on UW-authored OER as well as course materials costs for specific UW programs.

  • Serve on the UW Libraries Open Educational Resources Advisory Committee and Scholarly Communication Outreach and Education Team.

 

This internship will be completed primarily online, with some potential in-person components.

Appointment will begin Fall Quarter 2022.  Working hours are flexible based on mutual availability of intern and supervisory staff.

      Required Qualifications:
      • Experience creating and writing for the web.
      • Able to contribute productively to an organization that values diversity, inclusion and social justice Interest in open publishing, libraries and textbook affordability.
      • Experience creating and maintaining social media posts for organizations.
      • Effective communication skills.
      • Dedicated, creative, and organized.
      Desired Qualifications:
      • Experience in curriculum support (teaching, course design, pedagogy).
      • Familiarity with copyright law and public/open copyright options (including Creative Commons licenses)
      • Experiencing creating and publishing content using WordPress.

      Open Education is part of the Curriculum Support Services unit of the University of Washington Libraries Learning Services, which also includes Undergraduate Student Success; Libraries Instructional Design and Outreach; and Access & Building Services for Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning resources (including textbooks, videos, course modules and syllabi) released under an open license that permits their free use and repurposing by others.  Support for Open Education at the UW Libraries involves promoting the creation and use of OER by UW faculty, as well as support for textbook affordability initiatives. The Open Education librarian helps faculty author and publish OER using the Pressbooks platform, and supports students who are creating openly licensed materials as part of their UW coursework. These services aid in making course materials more affordable and accessible, as well as in educating students about their rights and responsibilities as student authors.  At the University of Washington, diversity is integral to excellence.         Internship Learning Outcomes:
        • Gain experience creating guidance, documentation and training materials for university faculty and students.
        • Develop an understanding of Open Educational Resources, open pedagogy and textbook affordability issues in an academic library setting
        • Gain competence with instruction and the promotion of Open Educational Resources in a higher education environment.
