Libraries Forms Alternative Access Team

A new Alternative Access Team will advise on solutions to address outcomes of potential changes in publishing partner contracts, journal access

October 28, 2019

As stated in the most recent update, the Libraries is currently in negotiations with publishing partners, including Elsevier, SpringerNature, and Sage whose existing journal subscription contracts expire at the end of 2019. While the Libraries negotiating team remains optimistic about the outcome of these negotiations, we will continue to plan for a range of scenarios, contingent on the outcome of negotiations. To that end, a cross-disciplinary Alternative Access Team has been formed to advise on planning and recommendations in response to potential contract changes that could impact access:

The Alternative Access Team is comprised of the following faculty and Libraries staff:

  • Mary F. Hebert, Professor of Pharmacy; Adjunct Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • John T. Slattery, Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education and Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine
  • Sara Gordon, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Washington, School of Dentistry.
  • Hilary Godwin, Dean of the UW School of Public Health and professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences
  • Clara W Berridge, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work
  • Judy Lazarus, Senior Lecturer and Community Liaison, Nurse-Midwifery Education Program Assistant Midwifery Director, Neighborcare Health Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing Department

    • Adebola Fabiku, Interim Co-Director of Access Services / Head, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services, University Libraries
    • Joanne Rich, Information Management Librarian/Public Research Services Associate Librarian, University Libraries

The University of California’s alternative access plan provides an example of the type of scenarios that could be considered. The team is charged with reviewing options, costs and implementation scenarios and serves in an advisory capacity only.
