The University Archives serves as the central and final repository for the historical records of all aspects of the University of Washington community. It appraises, preserves, and makes accessible a wide range of primary source material relating to the administrative, academic, legal, fiscal, social, and cultural interaction of individuals, departments, and programs of the University since 1861.

The University Archives is the University's corporate memory within a scholarly research context. It exists to help meet the University of Washington's legal responsibility to preserve and make available its records in accordance with applicable State and Federal Laws and to assist the University Community document its actions and decisions consistent with its mission.

Many University Archives collections are described briefly in Libraries' online catalog. A select few are described in further depth in the online finding aids. The most description about University Archives collections, however, is through indices and inventories located at the Reference Desk in Special Collections.

Includes records of the University of Washington that are identified through a systematic records management program as having permanent historical, research, administrative, legal, and/or fiscal value. Faculty Papers

Includes papers of teaching and research faculty and professional staff that document the academic and administrative life of the University as reflected in the career of individuals. These collections offer insight into the history and operation of the University that otherwise may be lost by relying only on official administrative records. They reveal professional interests and opinions that frequently clarify matters or provide different perspectives mentioned in the official records of the central administration. The papers in the collection are representative of faculty and staff who have defined significant ideas, undertaken research that has benefited the world, transformed the minds and lives of students, expanded the boundaries of human knowledge, or carried out exemplary service to the University or the larger community. Faculty papers are also important for providing insight into the histories of academic disciplines. Lists of faculty papers by name or faculty papers by department are available.

Some titles are serial in nature, others are collected individually and accessioned as part of a collection. Although many of these publications may be in other parts of the library system or duplicated in departmental files, the University Archives maintains the principle, official, non-circulating copy for reference and access in perpetuity. Publications are either described in the online catalog or in the finding aid for the Publications Collection (Guide to the Publications Collection , Departmental Publications A-J, Departmental Publications K-Z, Other Titles and Topics). Some are indexed in the Pacific Northwest Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index.
